Project 1 - Construction

Introduction

To further develop your Semester 1 project you are tasked with preparing drawings that
comprehensively describe the quality of materials (texture, grain) and their assembly in two
contexts of your project from semester 1, a door and a window. These drawings are design
drawings and should communicate the detailed architectural intent clearly to a third party.
Imagine a contractor looking at your scheme for the rst time, how will that that person
understand the critical issues that are integral to your architectural ideas.

You work with a fellow student who will act as a sounding board, a ‘critical friend’, you will meet
in studio once a week or more frequently as agreed to discuss each other's project. If your
colleague cannot understand your project without a verbal explanation then you must further
develop your drawings to answer their queries.

Semester Two

The class will work in the established tutorial groups in studio.

Your rst task is to assemble the materials you have already identi ed in your design. This
physical material is important as it allows a reading of mass, texture and temperature. There is a
sample library in the studio that will assist you, your choice of material should not be restricted to
only what is available in the studio.

Submission Requirements:

• Plan and Section and elevation 1:100 / 1:50 (updated from Semester 1 to re ect the
design as it may have developed to locate the door and window under study).
• 1:5 drawings of the plan, section and internal elevation and external elevation of both
a door and window. These drawings will articulate your intention in relation to how
materials relate to each other, is the door handle to the space a bespoke design? What
material is intended? Does the window form a seat, how is the space ventilated,
shaded from sun? Can the window and or door incorporate a shutter for privacy or
security?
• An accurate Carbon Rating Chart for the building and existing structures on site.
• A fully drawn and scaled 3D Elemental Carbon Breakdown of your building, colour
coded, showing the different components that make up your building if it was
disassembled, external walls, internal walls, roofs, windows, oors, foundations, with
this as appropriate, the same exercise for existing fabric and upcycled materials to be
undertaken then offset in the nal calculations. Each element can be measured and
assessed in terms of surface area mass kg eq. CO2/ m2 using the two carbon rates
provided on the Carbon Market_Housing Footprint pdf

Submission Date - digital submission to Bright Space on Tuesday 22/02/22 at 18.00

Assessment Will be based on how the brief stages and learning outcomes have been
answered.

The following assessment criteria will be applied at each stage

Synthesis The integration of the method of construction and choice of materials with the
architectural intention of the project

Development The detailed development of the structure and fabric to present a coherent
architectural scheme across all scales.

Zero Carbon Demonstrate your Zero Carbon proposal. Taking into account the embodied
Carbon or your building and CO2 emissions associated with running the
building over its lifetime.

Description The description and representation of your detailed design through the use of
orthogonal drawings.

Learning Outcomes :
• Develop appropriate strategies resulting in energy conscious and environmentally
sustainable technological solutions
• Apply appropriate fabric construction, component assembly and application of materials to
the students own design projects
• Design in a way which demonstrates a systematic understanding of the history,
manufacture, construction techniques and scienti c developments.
• Assess the value of materials, their sources, procurement, uses, historic and contemporary
developments

Theories of building or tectonic range from the traditional to the radical and an understanding of
this discourse is crucial to good architecture.
