Unraveling the Poem “Apo on the Wall”
By: Rendon M. Lumod
F. Sionil Jose once said “We write from life and call it Literature, and literature lives because
we are in it” like the poem Apo on the Wall by BJ Patino, the meaning inside it gave us such an
enormous message about the happenings in the past, in which this kind of literature tell us about the
life of every Filipinos that they experience in the past, and it signifies that this poem means a lot to us,
that it could enlighten us what Filipinos experienced in the past.
This poem tells a lot of untold stories in the past which we call it a history.
What I like the poem is that it provides me to look over what was in the past specifically
martial law times was like back then. It gives me also an idea of what kind of relationship (the narrator
and father) has and made me realize that the relationship of the child and the father is not the same to
the boss and the father. One of the lines that inculcate on my mind is “His eyes are following me like
he was that scary Jesus in the hallway saying I know, I know what you are doing” in which Ferdinand
Marcos is like Jesus who knows everything we do because of his power. Martial Law has a good and
bad effect in many Filipinos who experienced it. This poem served as a living testimony for those
Filipinos who come across this period, thus, the revelation of the dark side of what happened in the
past during Marcos regime that it has a lot of secret untold stories and unheard voices of testimonies up
until now weren’t given a chance to have justice. The poem is filled with fear, grief, and unheard
lamentations from our past. The poem made me realize and taught me the value of open-mindedness.
With regards to the present, President Rodrigo Duterte as all we know, declared martial law in
Mindanao and I don’t see any problem to that unlike before during Marcos regime but what makes me
feel sad is that what if President Duterte emulate the martial law during Marcos regime and we’ll taste
the wrath just like before and I do not want it to be repeated. The poem gave me the reason to give
value of what had occurred in the past.
The poem reminded us the importance of looking back at the past and applying the lessons we
learned in it. Thus, the poem serve as a memory, an experienced that must not be repeated. I learned
also from this poem is that equal rights should be distributed properly for it is the soul needed by every
person.
