A series of measurements were made on a sample. The target value for the measurement was 48.

Data set 1a contains all of the raw data obtained via the measurement
The final datum of 60.51 is suspected of being an outlier. Data set 1b is the raw data minus the suspected outlier. You need to choose which data set you can work with to carry out an
appropriate t-test at 95% confidence levels. For the t-test you want to compare the calculated average for the chosen data set against the target value. The question you are being asked is :
is there is a significant difference between the calculated average of the measured data and the target value of 48? Complete the following steps and answer the questions in the online quiz.

Step 1 Complete the calculatations (highlighted in yellow) for data sets 1a and 1b.

Step 2 Determine whether 60.51 is an outlier for data set 1a using the calculated value of Q and the Table of Critical values below

Step 3 Further to the answer to step 2, decide whether data set 1a or data set 1b should be used to calculate the true average value for the data.
put this calculated average value into cell I20 (green cell)

Step 4 complete the calculations for the t-test (blue cells)

Step 5 determine the value of tcritical from the statistical tables provided in the folder accompanying lecture 5. (red cell)

Step 6 Complete the relevant questions (1-11) in the online quiz.

A series of measurements were made in experiment 1 on a sample and the raw data are presented in data set 2a. The final datum of 1.795 is suspected of being an outlier.
Data set 2b is the raw data minus the suspected outlier. You need to choose which data set you can work with.
A second experiment carried out by a different group provided the raw data for data set 3a.
You need to decide on an appropriate t-test. For the t-test you want to compare the calculated average for the chosen data set for experiemnt 1 against the average value for experiment 2.
The question you need to answer is:
is there is a significant difference between the calculated average values from the two experiments? Complete the following steps and answer the questions in the online quiz.

Step 1 Complete the calculatations (highlighted in yellow) for data sets 2a, 2b and 3a

Step 2 From these calculations determine whether you are going to choose either data set 2a or 2b for experiment 1.

Step 3 Decide on an appropriate t- test and determine the value of tcritical (you will need this for the quiz)

Step 4 Using the same data sets, calculate the value of F for the comparison of both experiments. (hint when calculating the ratio the calculation should give an answer greater than 1)

Step 5 Complete the relevant questions (12-17) in the online quiz.

Two strains of bacteria, 81-176 and RM1221, were investigated for the effect of contamination by chicken juice in their growth medium. Table 5a contains the results obtained for both strands both in the absence and presence of the contamination.
Using this information complete Table 5a and Table 5b by following steps 1-5 and answer the relevant questions in the quiz in line with step 6.
