UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN KALAWAG CENTRAL

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Introduction

This study is to know the positive and negative effects of having of having social

media around. In conducting this study, we can learn how to improvise a strategy on

how to use the influence of social media correctly. Social media has greatly affected the

attentiveness and learning outcomes of the students. As social media becomes

widespread to the world, many people including elementary students are being

influenced by this. In today's communication environment, social media has become a

crucial component of peoples' lives, especially students. Particularly in the post-

pandemic era, when an enormous transformation is taking place in the educational

systems, its use is increasing much more than at any other time. According to, Singh

(Ajay, 2021) Social Media has become a vital part of a student’s social life. It is now

regarded as a learning platform that enhances student engagement and capabilities in

many schools. These platforms offer school children the opportunity to connect, get in

touch, access information and research. Social media is the strongest medium of

communication which helps people to connect from far places. Social media’s

acceptance in daily life is one of the driving forces behind these depending prospects

and how social media is changing education.

The use of social media is incomparably on the rise among students, influenced

by the globalized forms of communication and the post-pandemic rush to use multiple

social media platforms for education in different fields of study. Though social media

has created tremendous chances for sharing ideas and emotions, the kind of social
support it provides might fail to meet students’ emotional needs, or the alleged positive

effects might be short-lasting. (Chen & Xiao, 2022)

Background of the Study

Social media has a lot of use, especially in inquiring information. This is why the

opportunity to apply the use of social media in the student’s learning, must be used

appropriately at a given time period. The allocation of time in using social media must

– it achieved this milestone around 2004. This is arguably the beginning of social media

as we know it. With 2.3 billion users, Facebook is the most popular social media

platform today. YouTube, Instagram and WeChat follow, with more than a billion users.

Tumblr and TikTok come next, with over half a billion users (Ortiz-Ospina, 2019) . Some

school’s uses social media as platforms for their learning even since the post-pandemic.

In the year 2020, the pandemic had reached the Philippines and affected the student’s

learning. Some schools had postponed their classes while the others continued with

online learning through the use of social media.


Statement of the Problem (Objectives of the Study)

This study aims to determine the effects of social media to the learning of

elementary students.

Specifically, this study sought the answer the following research questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of the following;

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Grade Level

2. What are the social media platforms involved and their usage?

2.1 The social media that are being used

2.2 Purpose of using social media

3. How do the respondents assess the effect of social media in their learning?

2.3 Grades

2.4 Behavior

3. Did the social media became an advantage or disadvantage to the respondent’s

learning?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the Grades and behavior when grouped

according to profile?
Hypothesis

There is no significant difference on the assessment of the respondents on the

Academic Performance of selected learners of Kalawag Central School in terms of the

stated variables when grouped according to profile.

There is no significant difference on the assessment of the respondents on the

Financial Literacy of the selected Generation Y Professionals in terms of the stated

variables when grouped according to profile.

Theoretical Framework

As social media in all of its forms has slowly crept into the majority of homes,

social learning theories have identified the impact of media on how children and

adolescents behave in social situations. For internet users, social networking sites are

virtual worlds. Young minds' academic learning ability and conduct are impacted by

spending so much time in virtual worlds. It results from regular exposure to and

engagement in the virtual world as well as through video sharing and conversation,

where kids learn many of their personality qualities. There are behaviors.

Characteristics acquired as young adults persist into maturity. These are possible social

learning factors patterns observed in adults.

This study is anchored on theories propounded by Albert Bandura, B. F. Skinner

and Abraham Maslow. Bandura's. Social Learning Theory, as social media made inroads

into our living rooms, much of social learning has been influenced by it, especially

among the impressionable minds of children and adolescents. Adolescents have the

most impressionable minds, which explains their ability to learn and comprehend and
quickly pick up behaviors from their surrounding environment. Behavior patterns do

not necessarily have to be taught to them - they are highly receptive to learning through

social networking. (Vicera, 2016)


Conceptual Framework

This study “The Effect of the Rising Social Media on Elementary Students

Learning in Diadem Christian Elementary School” is based on the Input-Process-Output

(IPO) approach. The inputs are focus on the (1) Age, (2) Gender), (3) Grade Level, (4)

Social Media Used, (5) Purpose of using social media. The processes are focused on the

assessment of the criteria through survey/questionnaire and statistical data analysis.

As an end result, the expected output of this study, is to determine how the selected

elementary students are being affected by the rising of social media in their learning.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The subject of this study were the students of Kalawag Central School of Isulan.

It focuses to the variables such as students learning and rising of social media. The

respondent of this study are the selected 100 elementary students of the Kalawag

Central Elementary School of Isulan

Limitations of the Study

In this study is a small-size population which may result inaccurate. The

participants are only in a small area which may not be the case for other schools. The

results may only be applicable in this certain area.

Significance of the Study

This study will be a significant of being more aware about the effects of social media by

discovering new approaches to be taught in elementary schools.

Elementary Schools. The study will help them improve their school system as they

handle learner’s matter of academic performances and behavior.

Teachers. This is to help them learn new approaches and apply it in their teaching

strategy. It will help them handle and understand the learners’ perspectives.

Elementary Pupils. This will help them have a better environment. Also, this is to give

them discipline and time management.

Parents/ Guardians. This is to help them cooperate with the teacher on how to manage

the time of the pupils when it comes to using social media.


Future researchers. This study could serve as future reference in preparing for the

related the studies. Additionally, researchers highly recommend to revalidate this study

to be more relevant in the future.

Definition of Terms

Globalized - develop or be developed so as to make international influence or operation

possible.

Post-pandemic - describing the period following a pandemic. This pertains to the period

of COVID 19 Pandemic

Social Media - is a collective term for websites and applications that focus on

communication, community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and

collaboration.
CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Related literature and studies is composed of discussion of facts and principles,

studies, inquiries or investigations, articles that are conducted and related or have some

similarity in the study. The purpose of which was to gain insights from ideas, beliefs,

opinions, and judgment. Some writings that had indirect relations to the study were

included to emphasize that significance and findings of the present study.

Foreign Related Literature

According to (Loveless, 2022) Allowing young people to connect with others all

over the world will teach them so much and help them become more rounded

individuals. Before the Digital Era and the Rise of Social Media, life used to be

pleasurable and straightforward, with no pressure of constantly updating your life.

Everything you do use to be personal to you, with no fear of getting hacked or data

leakage. With the continued and increasing dominance of social media, the way of

communication has changed.

Social media has turned into an essential element of individuals’ lives including

students in today’s world of communication. Its use is growing significantly more than

ever before especially in the post-pandemic era, marked by a great revolution happening

to the educational systems. Recent investigations of using social media show that

approximately 3 billion individuals worldwide are now communicating via social media

(Iwamoto and Chun, 2020).


Charoensukmongkol (2018) reckoned that the mental health and well-being of

the global population can be at a great risk through the uncontrolled massive use of

social media. These researchers also showed that social media sources can exert

negative affective impacts on teenagers, as they can induce more envy and social

comparison.

According to Miaz (2019) Based on observation made in elementary schools,

researchers found problems in social study learning related to learning media used.

Teachers use less varied learning media because they only take pictures from the theme

book. Next, researchers interviewed the teacher and students. As a result, teachers feel

less capable to develop learning media, thus students feel the media used by teachers

cannot motivate them to learn. This fact certainly has a big impact on students. They

have difficulty in understanding the material hence they cannot express ideas they have

and integrate them in learning activities. This is what causes students less active in

learning as seen at the observation time. Therefore, learning outcomes of students'

initial test scores are low and do not reach the minimum completeness criteria.

Local Related Literature

One of the usual activities of children and adolescents nowadays is the use of

social media. Popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, the

well-known video site YouTube, and blogging sites are all examples of social media.

These social media sites are medium of social interaction, communication and

entertainment for the youths which has been immensely growing due to the fast-paced

demand and consumption on smartphones, computers and other gadgets. Social media

may play a vital role in broadening the social connection and enriching the technical
skills of adolescents, but the risks of using it cannot be overlooked. (Duque et al, 2017)

According to the (Bernabe, 2021) Digital report on the Philippines, we have about

89 million social media users, or about 80.7% of our population of 110.3 million.

Filipinos spend an average of 11 hours a day online, and a little over 4 hours a day on

social media, which isn’t really a shock considering our shift to a mostly online way of

life in the past year due to the pandemic.

Education in the Philippines has also become reliant on the internet during the

pandemic. With the uncertainty of returning to face-to-face classes, distance or online

learning remains the norm. However, digital learning platforms are not the most reliable

or effective channels for learners and educators alike given the many challenges of

accessibility and affordability when it comes to learning in the country.

Social media is the most popular platform for social networking of today’s

generation. As social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, online gaming,

etc., continue to grow, it becomes a part of every person’s daily life, especially college

students. The dependency of students on social media has reached such a level that

every student cannot think about the direction of their growth without social media.

Hence, the dependency of every student on social media is now leading to addiction.

(Tilar et al, 2020)

According to research, people’s level of effect increases, their level of contentment

can decrease, and their likelihood of getting in trouble increases. Even the schools have
rules not allowing students to use gadgets; hence, parents should not allow their kids

to bring any gadget in school. (Tipones et al, 2020)

As social media usage primarily roams around teenagers and students, finding

ways of negating most, if not all, of the negative aspects can be a daunting task. There

are ways though. Moderating their access to social media is one excellent method. Most

of the negative aspects can be overcome by reducing the amount of time spent on social

media. Paying attention to their academic progress and addressing any issues will go a

long way towards keeping the negative aspects of social media from influencing their

studies. Provide ample time for face-to-face social interaction, like having some family

leisure time in which you discuss their studies in a relaxed atmosphere. (The Freeman.

2019)

Between students, social media is used to communicate with their classmates. It

is also used when academic performance are conducted. The social media platforms

help improve the students’ academic performance and increase their knowledge through

gathering data and information. (De La Cruz, 2017)


Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods that will use in conducting the

collection of data for this study. It shows the research design which illustrates the type

of research that will be used to ensure that the problem would be answered

systematically and effectively. Population and sample techniques use and the

distribution of the respondents in the study. Research instruments which explain the

type of tool use in gathering the data. Data gathering procedure explain the detailed

steps in gathering the data needed for the research, and statistical tools use in

interpreting the gathered data.

Research Design

The researchers used a descriptive method of research, specifically the survey,

as a method of collecting data thru giving a questionnaire to the respondents to achieve

the goal of the study. This is used because of its advantages in educational work as a

fact finding operation with adequate interpretation. The descriptive method involves the

description, recording, analysis and interpretation of the prevailing conditions and the

present nature of a certain group. It will include the following processes: induction,

analysis, classification, enumeration, measurement, and assessment of the data. This

study used a survey questionnaire as its main tool for data gathering. The survey will

ascertain the Under the Influence of Social Media in Kalawag Central Elementary

School.
Respondents of the Study

The Kalawag Central Elementary School has the largest student learners in

elementary level in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat, and the one hundred (100) students who is

currently enrolled in Kalawag Central Elementary School were selected by the

researcher as respondents and are willing to participate in the study. This study used a

purposive sampling technique. A purposive sampling is a non-probability sampling

where the respondents are aware in selecting relevant subjects or elements addition to

the study. The purposive sampling approach determines and selects individuals from

the population that will be involve in the study for a specific purpose. The largest sample

provided the information needed for they meet the criteria set by the researchers.

Research Instruments

The researchers used a survey questionnaire in conducting this study.

The questionnaire is composed of three parts:

Part I: Consist of three qualifying questions.

Part II: Consist of the demographic profiles of the respondents in terms of their gender,

age, grade level.

Part III: Contains the assessment of respondents on the effects of social media to their

academic learning.

Part IV: Contains the assessment of respondents on the effects of social media to their

behaviour.
Likert Scale. This is used, to interpret and further analyze the quantitative

results, the results to the questionnaires will be expressed in four categories with the

given corresponding points and will be interpreted using the following scale:

Validation of the Instruments

To validate the instrument, the researchers made sure that the questions focus and is

in line with social media influence to the academic performance and behavior of the

student. Prior the start of the survey proper, a draft will be submitted to the research

adviser, and revisions will be made as ordered.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers obtained authorization from the school administration to administer

the survey in order to conduct the study.


The researchers launched the survey questionnaires through Google Forms and on

school. The survey questionnaire starts with a consent page, asking the permission of

the respondents and give them assurance that the data that they will provide would

remain confidential. The gathered data were collated, tabulated, and analyzed for the

final interpretation of the results with the help of the adviser and statistician.
