The Good Samaritan

Ask the students to read in advance the story of the Good Samaritan or provide a short video
presentation about his life. Relate to a story on how a nurse will treat their neighbors in terms
of:

Cultural Diversity
One of the most important elements emphasized in pursuit of competent cultural care is
identifying your own beliefs and culture before caring for others. Caregivers are expected to be
aware of their own cultural identifications in order to control their personal biases that interfere
with the therapeutic relationship. Developing this self-awareness can bring into view the
caregivers biases or culturally-imposed beliefs. It can also shed light on oppression, racism,
discrimination, and stereotyping and how these affect nurses personally and their work.

Socioeconomic Diversity
Nurses are called on to respond with sensitivity to everyone, regardless of race, disability,
socioeconomic status, religion, or sexual orientation. Nurses seek ways to overcome barriers,
such as stereotyping and bias, to deliver quality healthcare. Diversity in nursing better ensures
that all patients feel welcome and get the best care.

Religious Diversity
Nursing care must be consistent and congruent with these beliefs and practices or dissonance and
distress can occur. Conflicts with one's religious beliefs and treatment plans can lead to spiritual or
religious distress as well as the refusal of treatments and nonadherence to the plan of care. The signs
and symptoms of spiritual or religious distress can include emotional and psychological signs and
symptoms such as those associated with a lack of connectedness with others, with the greater power
and within self. Some of these manifestations can include feelings of abandonment, anger, loss of
sense and meaning, alienation, hopelessness, suffering, distress, guilt, maladaptive coping, and a
loss of hope.
