Englewood Community in Chicago

Demographics of the Community

The total population of Englewood Community in Chicago is 24,369 people with a

number of 9,597 households that can give shelter to 2.5% citizens in each home. The majority of

the population lives in a one-person household (44.6%), followed by a two-person household and

a three-person household. Only 18.6% of the population live in a four-person household.

According to the census, house size also changed through time, depicting that 33.5% of the

community lives in a house with two bedrooms, 33.1% of people live in a three-bedroom house,

and a minor percentage of 10.1 live in a four-bedroom house. Additionally, 51.0% of the citizens

live with their families, followed by 49.0% of people who live alone. Only 17.5% of the

population are single parents with a child. In like manner, the majority of the citizens live in

houses that were built between 1940-1969, and a minor percentage of the community live in

newer constructions ("CMAP Community Data Snapshot | Englewood", 2022). Besides these

types of households, the racial distribution percentages display that Black non-Hispanic people

make 94.6% of the population, followed by Hispanics or Latinos of any race with 3.7%. The

minority of the population is conformed by Asians with 0.3%, Whites with 0.6%, and other non-

Hispanic multiple races with 0.8% of the population.

Correspondingly, a great part of the people living in Englewood are divided into three

age gaps ranging from 20 to 34 years old to 5 and 19 years old, and 50 to 64 years old. There is

also a consistent group of people who has a median age from 35 to 49 years old ("CMAP

Community Data Snapshot | Englewood", 2022). The lesser age distribution is shaped by an age

group of 85 years old. In addition, the education levels of the community differ a lot. The great

majority of the people possess a high school diploma, an average number of the community does
Englewood Community in Chicago 3

not possess a high school certification or college degree, and only a lesser part of the neighbors

has a bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree.

Furthermore, the great majority of the citizens are employed (74.4%), and there is a

25.6% of the population that is unemployed. The top industry sector of the community is the

health sector that makes 19.0% of the occupations for people in the community, followed by the

administration sector, foodservice sector, and finally the retail sector. The household income

levels of the population can vary between less than $25,000 which is the income of the majority

of the neighbors, and $150,000 and over that represents a minor amount of the population. So,

the median income of one household in the community can range between $25,000 and $49,999.

Transportation is also a characteristic that has changed across time for the members of the

community, for this reason, a great number of people have no vehicle available, followed by one

vehicle available per household. Only 11.9% of the population has two vehicles per household

and the 2. 7% has three or more vehicles available. That shows that a great number of people

use public transportation while others prefer to drive the only vehicle they possess. And, in

conclusion, there is a minor amount of people that use bicycles or walk to their jobs ("CMAP

Community Data Snapshot | Englewood", 2022).

The major roads for transit that Englewood possess are Garfield Boulevard, 75th Street,

Racine Avenue, and the Metra Railroad Tracks. In the same way, the community has a junction

that allows passengers to connect with the Chicago railroad, the Pacific railroad, the Rock Island

railroad, the New York railroad, and the Pennsylvania railroad.

On the other hand, there are several religious communities inside Englewood community

with a majority being of the Christian faith. For example, the most outstanding groups are The

Bethel Christian Community Church, The Englewood Church of God, and Family Focus

Christian Center. Moreover, there is an Islam group called C.R.O.E (The Coalition for the

Remembrance of Elijah Muhammad), which believes that Elijah Muhammad was the last and

greatest messenger of Allah. There is also a great advancement in cultural groups across the

community, for example, there are programs that are made by the Englewood Community

Cultural Planning Council. There is also a magazine called StudentsXpress that allows students

from public schools to showcase art and writing to create an alternate expression between the

community. At the same time, there is a great development of theater with groups such as Red

Clay Dance Youth Ensemble & Theater Ensemble, which is a professional group of Afro-

Contemporary Dance, and the FAM Entertainment Theater Company, which mission is to

become a great educational program for performance arts.

Englewood Community’s Interest in Education

In Englewood’s community, there has been a great interest in educating residents by

helping them through programs and financial support to institutions. Lately, taxes rates have

increased to support local schools. The amount of taxes for education is taken from properties, so

schools are asking to have $84 additional property tax dollars a year for a property that can cost

$250,000. Surprisingly, some programs are going to be expanded despite cutting $400 millions

of the budget, meaning that some funds are going to be provided to magnet schools, charter

schools, and kindergarten. Thus, the district will restraint some funds for teacher training and

security cameras in the school, to be able to not increase the size of each classroom.

There is also an interest in education in the fire and police department with the CPTFA

(Chicago Police and Firefighter Training Academy). This program recruits several students from

public and non-public high schools each year ("School Details Page | Chicago Public Schools",

2022). One of the main goals of the education system is to provide candidates from high schools

to be applicants for the police and firefighters academies. With other occupations such as

physicians and dentists, the Englewood Health Center brings services to care for the well-being

of the community. In this center, they search for unique applicants to study internships and

residency programs to enable citizens with a complete education in health fields such as EMS

training, Dental training, Pharmacy, Internal Medicine, Podiatry, and a school of Radiography

("Englewood Health Physician Network - Englewood Health", 2022). The rotary club of

Englewood also has a deep interest in educating young adults. They create opportunities for

young people’s ethical and educational achievement, promoting health programs and preventing

hunger. The rotary club helps give $10,000 in scholarships for college to high school students of

Englewood and sends middle school and high school students to rotary camps where they can

learn important leadership lessons. Additionally, they have a program for disadvantaged

students, in which they provide them with back-to-school backpacks ("The Rotary Club of

Englewood | Rotary Club of Englewood", 2022).

Another club that is interested in education is The Lions Club of Englewood, which

sponsors a vision screening and a treatment program for the residents of the community. For

school plans, they associate with school nurses who provide free vision exams and free glasses to

students that qualify for the program. The parents are also involved in the education of their

children, so they have an after-school program that focus on STEM activities (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Math) to prevent those children to be involved in another risky

activities due to the lack of supervision. And, at the same time, institutions like colleges near

Englewood and local newspapers such as The Gate News helps to spread information about

scholarships and programs that will allow people to study and to have better job opportunities.

Importance of Institutions in the Education

Englewood Community in Chicago 6

The Health Department of Chicago brings opportunities to educate children about their

physical well-being and also about mental health issues. They have programs to educate the

community about the importance of a proper care system and residencies for graduate persons

who want to follow their education and become fluent in an specific subject. In the same way,

The Englewood Cook County Health Center has an extensive list of scholarships and

investigations about health issues to educate people on these topics. They have great importance

in the education of the community by bringing current research results that can shed light on new

scientific discoveries. Likewise, the Englewood public library system is important because it

makes knowledge available to the entire community. Library programs seek to achieve a much

more inclusive place with higher levels of education by doing activities in different fields of

knowledge to connect educated youth with the needs of the people. The Hiram Kelly Branch

Library and the Sherman Park Branch Library help to build a stronger basis for education.

Furthermore, religious centers help in the emotional education of children and in restoring love

and family values. They help young people to be leaders in their community and to help in the

physical, mental, and emotional development of each person. Additionally, the department of

culture and recreation is of great importance in generating policies for the artistic expression of

individuals to enable them to get a better perspective of their surroundings.

School Information

There are sixteen schools within the Englewood community that belong to the Chicago

Public Schools Association. The school district has rules that its academic standards are based on

called the Common Core Standards and the Illinois Learning Standards. Inside each school, there

are nurse interns and health officials. Among the functions of the school nurse are the following:

Nursing Care Provider, Investigator, Communicator, Counselor, Educator, Child Advocate,

Record Keeper. The school nurse has to care for and ensure the health of the students and

collaborate with the district Physician. Moreover, The Englewood School District has developed

a Wellness Policy that focuses on improving student health. The policy was made by the

teachers, administrators, the district nurse, and parents. The wellness policy is made up of the

following elements: nutrition education, nutrition standards for students, promoting opportunities

for physical activity, teaching good health practices in the community, and social-emotional

wellness. Likewise, the purpose of the wellness committee is to involve administrators, school

food staff, teachers, parents, and the general public to use the necessary resources for proper

health education. The nurse shall provide medical care in emergencies. As such, they must

assume the role of the first responder to all medical emergencies for all staff and students,

arrange for transportation and supervision of students in need of emergency care, notify the

parents of any student required of immediate medical attention, administer emergency

medications per medical protocols and school physician orders, administer emergency

administration of epinephrine via Epi-pen auto-injector or, where applicable, emergency

administration of glucagon. All nurses are trained to use nebulizers as part of medication

administration. For this reason, human resources determine and maintain a list of personnel who

need training in universal precautions.

Classroom Organization

The classrooms are organized in desks where students can learn in the best way.

However, it also has classrooms where they have computers and where new technologies can be

learned. Each classroom is made for the subject to be implemented. On the other hand, the

school district provides resources to help students in different grades to explore different options

and opportunities. For this reason, there is an initiative in public schools that carries out
Englewood Community in Chicago 8

personalized counseling to guarantee that all students can have a plan after graduating from high

school. To such a degree, elementary school promotion takes place during the second week of

June for students in grades three, six, and eight. Promotion is based on the student's academic

performance as shown by final grades in reading and math ("School Details Page | Chicago

Public Schools", 2022). Students who do not have the required promotion points will have to

assist to Summer Bridge to be promoted to the next grade. In each school, there are departments

for each subject where a teacher or a group of teachers are in charge of its complete

implementation depending on the emphasis of each school or person. For example, some schools

have a STEM emphasis, so the science and math departments are much larger.

Special Education

For the Special Education process, there is an Education Program that is individualized,

and is carried out for children that comes from public schools. The process is created when a

team of professional therapist have evaluated the student and found the child eligible for special

education. The progress of the student is reviewed every week and month. Children may qualify

for special education and related services in 14 disability categories. If the enquiry is made, an

evaluation reunion is scheduled to complete the request within 14 days. The purpose of the

meeting is to plan the evaluations necessary to evaluate the child in all areas related to his or her

suspected disability by trained personnel such as physicians, therapists, and special education

teachers. The committee identifies the unique needs of the student and describes how the school

will address those needs ("School Details Page | Chicago Public Schools", 2022). Supplementary

aids supports and services are then identified to enable the student to achieve those goals.

Student progress is measured by giving quarterly grades to inform parents of student progress

considering that annual goals have been generated for their progress.

Analysis and Recommendations

The strengths of the community are that they care about the education of their young

people and have different health programs for them. Also, there is a great variety of groups that

choose to advise in how to achieve better well-being practices in the life of each person.

However, within the community, there are still certain health problems that must be managed.

For example, most people do not do any type of physical activity and in addition to this, it is

reported that they consume a lot of sugar in food, increasing the risk of diabetes.

In addition, statistics say that most people suffer from heart disease, cancer, or obesity

problems. For this reason, it is necessary to educate people so that they follow a more balanced

diet that does not contain foods with high cholesterol or high levels of sugar (2022). Also, carry

out activities within schools and health centers to promote physical activity. It could work to do

outdoor activities of dance and sports to encourage people to have a healthier life. Moreover, it is

necessary to help people living in poverty who cannot have a balanced diet, by involving

nutrition and food education programs.
