ANIMAL & PLANT CELLS 1.

2
PLANT CELLS:
o Cell wall- made of cellulose. Strengthens the cell and
gives it support
o Chloroplasts- contain chlorophyll (green substance,
absorbs light so plant can make food by
photosynthesis
o Permanent vacuole- space in cytoplasm filled with cell
sap; important for keeping cells rigid to support plant
ANIMAL CELLS:
o Nucleus- controls all activities of the cell, surrounded by
nuclear membrane; contains genes on the chromosomes
that carry instructions for making proteins needed to build
new cells/organisms
o Cytoplasm- liquid gel; most chemical reactions needed for
life take place
o Cell membrane- controls passage of substances (e.g
glucose/ mineral ions) into cell; controls movement of
substances (e.g hormones) out of the cell
o Mitochondria- in cytoplasm where aerobic respiration takes
Algae- simple aquatic organisms; they place, releasing energy for cell
o Ribosomes- where protein synthesis takes place, making all
make their own food by photosynthesis
proteins needed for cell
