The presentation:
In this presentation I will explain a little bit of the history of the basque
language.

The evolution of areas where Basque is spoken:

-There we have a map where we can see the evolution of areas where
Basque is spoken. We can see that in the first century before Christ the
Basque was spoken from Aquitaine (nowadays France) to Tudela and from
Andorra to Burgos. We also can see as the centuries progressed the area
where Basque was spoken reduced. Despite we have this map we don´t know
exactly the area where this language was used.

The situation of the Basque language nowadays:

-Nowadays the Basque language has 700.000 (seven hundred thousand)
speakers, and it´s ranked 51 in the world of languages with more
speakers. The Basque language is official in the Basque Country and in
the north of Navarre, but it is spoken in another places like in the south
of France or some places other places.

The decline of the Basque language

-The decline of the Basque Language started with the French Revolution. The
French revolution occurred in 1799 and one of the rules that applied was that
every French were equal and for this reason any difference disappeared
including the minor languages. Since the revolution everything was centralized
and decided from Paris and the French was going to be the unique official
language. For that reason every little languages were reduced, included the
Basque.

-The Franco's dictatorship lasted from 1939 to 1975, in these years all the
languages of Spain was prohibited except the Spanish. The person who
spoke Basque or any other language was imprisoned. For these reasons the
Basque in those years was near to disappear.
The standardization process:
-The basque language has 5 dialects, that bring a lot of problems. The words
are different, the way to write is different and the pronunciation changes a lot.
That´s why we have problems to understand anyone who speaks any other
dialect.

-To solve those problems some important people related with the Basque
Language got together in Arantzazu in 1968 to try to make an unificated
language to avoid the disappearing of the Basque

-The unified Basque was a unification of the different dialects to have a

referent language to learn and use formally. Thanks to this today we can
understand each other and the Basque is in good health.

The origin of the basque language:

The relation with the Iberian language:
Many philologists relate the Basque language with the Iberian language, we
haven´t many information about that language but we know that it shares
many words with the basque. Then i will put a video with the numbers in
Iberian which has a lot of similarities with the numbers in Basque.

Basque names in a lot of places around Europe:

-The Basque was the oldest language of Europe and it hasn't any relation with
any other living language. It isn't known how much territory it covered the
Basque, but the investigators have some theories. One of them is that the
Basque extended to Italy. There we can see the north of Italy where a lot of
names of cities and mountains have similarities with names of mountains and
cities of Basque country

The discovery of the hand of Irulegi:

-So far, the oldest register of the Basque language was of the 10th century but
with the discovery of the hand of Irulegi we can know that the Basque already
existed in the 1st century. In this hand we have 5 words in Basque written with
the Iberian alphabet. I have a video that explains all this.
Videos:
-This video explains the history of the hand of Irulegi
-This video is a video which shows the similarities between Basque and
Iberian numbers

Questions:
-Do you think that it is important to know where our language comes from?

-Do you think that it should be learned our origins and roots in school?
