Intellectual Property
Industrial property legislation is part of the wider body of law known as intellectual
property. Intellectual property relates to items of information or knowledge, which can be
incorporated in tangible objects at the same time in an unlimited number of copies at different
locations anywhere in the world. The property is not in those copies but in the information or
knowledge reflected in them. Intellectual property rights are also characterized by certain
limitations, such as limited duration in the case of copyright and patents.
The importance of protecting intellectual property was first recognized in the Paris
Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property in 1883 and the Berne Convention for the
Protection of Literary and Artistic Works in 1886. Both treaties are administered by the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Countries generally have laws to protect intellectual property for two main reasons. One is
to give statutory expression to the moral and economic rights of creators in their creations and
to the rights of the public in accessing those creations. The second is to promote creativity and
the dissemination and application of its results, and to encourage fair trade, which would
contribute to economic and social development.
Intellectual property is usually divided into two branches, namely industrial property and
copyright. Copyright relates to artistic creations, such as poems, novels, music, paintings, and
cinematographic works. The expression copyright refers to the main act which, in respect of
literary and artistic creations, may be made only by the author or with his authorization.
The broad application of the term “industrial” is clearly set out in the Paris Convention for
the Protection of Industrial Property (Article 1 (3)): “Industrial property shall be understood in the
broadest sense and shall apply not only to industry and commerce proper, but likewise to
agricultural and extractive industries and to all manufactured or natural products, for example,
wines, grain, tobacco leaf, fruit, cattle, minerals, mineral waters, beer, flowers, and flour.”
Industrial property takes a range of forms. These include patents to protect inventions;
and industrial designs, which are aesthetic creations determining the appearance of industrial
products. Industrial property also covers trademarks, service marks, layout-designs of integrated
circuits, commercial names and designations, as well as geographical indications, and protection
against unfair competition. In some of these, the aspect of intellectual creation, although
existent, is less clearly defined. What counts here is that the object of industrial property typically
consists of signs transmitting information, in particular to consumers, as regards products and

indicações geográficas e proteção contra a concorrência desleal. Em alguns deles, o aspecto da

People waste energy constantly, even if unintentionally. According to the Texas Transportation
Institute, drivers in the Washington area burn, on average, one quart of fuel per person each
workday just sitting in traffic jams. This waste has some serious side effects.
That beautiful red and pink sky you sometimes see as the sunsets can be attributed to clouds of
nitrogen oxides and other pollutants from emissions, mucking up the atmosphere. Surely better,
cleaner, and more efficient alternative energy sources must exist. What is meant by the term
“alternative energy source”?
When we think of energy, or fuel, for our homes and cars, we think of petroleum, a fossil fuel
processed from oil removed from the ground, of which we know there is a limited supply. But
alternative fuels can be many things — the wind, sun, and water can all be used to create fuel.
These alternative energies also share the distinction of being what we call renewable resources.
Natural gas, propane, and octane can also be used to create energy, but they are not renewable:
once they are consumed they are gone.

Is the threat of running out of petroleum real? It has taken thousands, if not millions, of years to
create the natural stores of petroleum we have now. We are using what is available at a much

petroleum we have is how much we need to keep in reserve, for future use.

Industrial property takes a range of forms. These include patents to protect inventions;
and industrial designs, which are aesthetic creations determining the appearance of industrial
products. Industrial property also covers trademarks, service marks, layout-designs of integrated
circuits, commercial names and designations, as well as geographical indications, and protection
against unfair competition. In some of these, the aspect of intellectual creation, although
existent, is less clearly defined. What counts here is that the object of industrial property typically
consists of signs transmitting information, in particular to consumers, as regards products and
services offered on the market. Protection is directed against unauthorized use of such signs
likely to mislead consumers, and against misleading practices in general.
Understanding Industrial Property. World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, p. 3-5. In:
Internet: <http://www.wipo.int> (adapted)
01 Protection granted by industrial property rights is exclusive to those products in which the
aspects of intellectual creation are explicit.
02 “Intellectual property” is an umbrella term which defines a group of laws, including those
concerning industrial property.
03 The term “property” can be replaced by the word propriety, without distorting the general
meaning of the text.
04 Copyright and Industrial Property are normally considered as the two constituents of
Intellectual Property.
06 Intellectual property laws concern themselves with the property of the copies of artistic or
industrial products.

26 Even some applications once seen as sequential are now demanding concurrent computation.
28 In spite of being a longstanding matter, concurrent computation has been used just by
professionals who implement database management systems.
29 The author of the text claims that concurrent computation is an outdated issue.
In the text,
30 the verb “realize” (R.7) can be replaced by accomplish without any change in the meaning
of the sentence.
I’ m sure a lot of people in the media are terribly lonely if they just admit it. That’s why you
4see them in bars, because they have nowhere to go. They turn to drink to deaden the effect.
Being famous is like being extremely beautiful, in that it makes you seem extremely distant.
It can be very difficult for someone like me to go into a bar, for instance. People stare, and
come over and ask for an autograph, which is very nice and flattering, but the assumption is
always: “What on earth is he doing here?” Initially it is very easy to meet people, but it is always
very superficial, and they are always the same kind of people.

I suffered very badly from loneliness in the past. Like other broadcasters, I am quite timid,
but I was also very ambitious, and that didn’t leave me much time for friendship.
Eventually you can begin to enjoy loneliness and stop feeling sorry for yourself. I have a
great job which compensates for a lot. I have one really good friend I’ve known for years, and I
feel you can’t have everything.
