Continuity editing - One of the most important part of editing

Combine – The simplest editing is combining program portions by hooking the video-recorded pieces
together in the chosen sequence. The more care that was taken during the production, the less work
you have to do in post-production.

Shorten- involve cutting the available footage to make the final edit fit a given time slot or to eliminate
extraneous material.

Continuity editing is understanding how to shorting things yet smooth.

Correct – editing time is spent on correcting mistakes, either by eliminating unacceptable portions of a
scene or by replacing them with better ones.

Build – the most difficult, but also most satisfying, editing assignments are those on which you can build
a show from a great many takes. Postproduction is no longer ancillary to production but constitutes a
crucial phase in the production process.

When creating montage, you build the scene, you build meaning, you build interaction through visual
connection.

Story Continuity – the overriding factor in making editing decisions is telling a story. Most of the time,
your editing will probably not involve a major motion picture but rather commercials, documentaries,
new feature, or your personal footage. You will then find that some of the most difficult assignments are
not the longer projects but the ones in which you have to tell your story in 30 seconds or less.

As an editor, make sure to understand the story from start to finish.

Subject Continuity- the viewer should be able to recognize a subject or an object from one shot to the
next. Therefore, avoid editing between shots of extreme changes in distance, unless it is for dramatic
effects where you simply cut from a helicopter view of a city to a CU of a car. If its is available, you can
intercut a medium shot (MS) from a different angle or use a slow zoom-in

As an editor, you should remember and understand the gaze. You have to think creatively and what to
develop.

Vectors and mental map - are very important on how to view or read the video project.

- Will help greatly noy only in continuity editing but also in th pre-editing production phase when
visualizing the proper framing of shots and how they will edit together as well as the blocking of
talent

Graphic Vector – created by lines or by stationary elements that are positioned in such a way as to
suggest a line.

Index vector- formed by someone looking or something pointing unquestionably in a specific direction.

- Is an invisible line wherein we are drawn that there is a connection with the subjects.

Motion Vector is generated by something actually moving or perceived to be moving on-scree. Can be
illustrated with a video camera
By understanding vector, you could understand what kind of shot should follow that would match
vector to create continuity.

Motion Continuity – determined not only by maintaining the principal direction in which an object is
moving but also by the movement itself.

Light and Color Continuity – Despite careful white balancing, you will find that the colors don’t always
match from shot to shot.

- It is important to color grade the entire scene.

Sound Continuity – Ambient sounds are very important to maintaining editing continuity.

Complex editing- is about elements. We have to understand what elements we should/could be used.

- Its all about intention on how to use it.

- It is how you create experience.
- It is how you meticulously craft cut by cut, transition to transition each clip and eventually transfer
the emotions you want your audience to experience.

Elements:

Cut- is the most normal thing

Dissolve

Fade

Wipes (Vertical, Circle, Sawtooth)

Animated transition

Special complexity effects:

Flashback/Flashforward

Instant Replays

Multiple Screens

- Used when we want to visualize a complex story.

- In editing, you have to understand how to crafts scene well, what kind of timing to create.
