ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ARTS

These are the basic elements of arts that are used by artist in creating art; they are what you use to create an aesthetically
pleasing work

Line: The edge of a shape, form or the direction followed by anything in motion.
Shape: Shape encloses a two dimentional area. Geometric or organic.
Form: Form encloses a three-dimentional area.
Value: Shadows/shades from lightness to darkness.
Space: The area between and around objects.
Texture: The surface quality of an object that we sense through touch.
Color: Light reflected from a surface. Great! Lucy was able to accomplish the task with your help.

INDIA
Rangoli is one of the most beautiful and pleasing art forms of India. It comes from the words "rang" meaning color and
"aavali" meaning colored creepers or row of colors. It is the art of making designs or patterns on the walls or the floor of the
house using finely ground white powder along with different colors. Rangoli has a purpose; it is used to “enlighten” or to
welcome Hindu gods to the household. Mothers in India do this activity every morning and teach rangoli to their daughters.
Some common symbols used in Rangoli are peacocks, lotus flowers, mangoes, and fish.
The most important among the elements of arts in Rangoli is its being colorful and its shapes.
Bright and vibrant colours with value (darkness or lightness of color) are employed in this art .

Mehndi is a form of body art and temporary skin decoration originated in ancient India, in which decorative designs are
created on a person's body (particularly on their hands and feet), using a paste, created from the powdered dry leaves of
the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis). Traditional Indian designs are representations of the sun on the palm, which in this
context, is intended to represent the hands and feet.

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus in India and all around the world in October or November. It is the Hindu New Year and is
either a 3-day or 5-day holiday depending on where you come from. It is a very exciting and colorful holiday, where homes
are cleaned to welcome the New Year and windows are opened so that the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, can enter.
Hindus believe that she cannot enter a house which is not lit up, so every household burns special diwali clay lamps (diyas) to
light the way for the goddess. This is why the holiday is also known as the "Festival of Lights."

SAUDI ARABIA
Carpet Design - Woven in patterns recalling gardens or bouquets of brightly colored flowers, they brought warmth and
beauty to the parlors, drawing rooms and boudoirs and were prized wedding gifts in our grandparents' and great-
grandparents' generation at the turn of this century. They are still appreciated today for their color, beauty, craftsmanship and
design.

TURKMENISTAN
The most unique and beautiful carpets in the world are produced by Turkmenistan. These vary in shape and purpose.
Carpet weaving is an ancient art, and each tribe developed its own distinctive pattern. Turkmen carpets have been
traditionally woven out of wool, cotton, and silk by women, using horizontal looms. The method of weaving has been
modernized, but the beauty and quality of the fabrics remain.

Keteni Turkmenistan is also the source of keteni, a homespun silk that is used for the beautiful dresses worn by Turkmen
women on special occasions. The embroidery uses different patterns that are as unique as a family seal.

PAKISTAN
Truck Art of Pakistan Across Pakistan, brightly colored flamboyant trucks painted with images of idealized landscapes,
famous personalities, flowers, and trees tuned village, lanes, city streets, and long-distance highways into a gallery without
walls; a free-form, kaleidoscopic exhibition in motion. Other arts of Pakistan include painted chests and jars. In the late 1940s,
when trucks began long-haul journeys to deliver goods, each company designed a logo so that illiterate people would
understand who owned the truck. Over time, these logos became increasingly ornate.
TIBET
Mandala One of the richest visual objects in Tibetan Buddhism is the Mandala. In the ancient Sanskrit language of Hinduism
and Buddhism, mandala means “circle.” Traditionally, a mandala is a geometric design or pattern that represents the cosmos
or deities in various heavenly worlds. “It's all about finding peace in the symmetry of the design and of the universe,” says
artist Saudamini Madra. The circular designs symbolizes the idea that life is never ending and everything is connected. The
mandala also represents spiritual journey within the individual viewer. Symmetry is typically a mandala's primary
characteristic and the heart of mandala designs.
