STUDENTS EXCHANGE PROGRAM FAQs
Will there be a global immersion program for 1-2 weeks anytime soon?
Yes, it was on the cards but there is uncertainty around the same due to the pandemic as at
least 15-20 students are required to participate in the same to make it a success. However, due
to the current situation, there is a chance that students may be forced to back out. Immersion
programs to the USA and Germany are on the horizon for the month of June subject to
improvement in the current pandemic situation. There is a possibility that the cost for such
programs may be slightly higher because of increased airfares and living expenses. Immersion
programs may cost around 1-1.5 lakh and 2.5 lakh rupees for Germany and USA respectively. If
the associated expenses do go down, both programs will be made available to the students.
What is the application timeline for the exchange process and which department is to
be approached for the same?
Preparations for these programs start from Day 1 itself. Students must take permission from
the program coordinator before beginning their application for an exchange program failing
which students cannot proceed with their application. Form 701 and 707 need to be filled outby
students. Students also need to ensure that the number of credits is mentioned before hand in
these forms to ensure the smooth transfer of credits between universities. The same needs to
be signed by the Director and Satyendra Sir.
Students need to fill in their application on the website of the partner university as well, with
all the relevant documents such as transcripts, passports, visas, etc. The nomination is then
forwarded to the partner university. Upon approval and acceptance of the nomination by the
partner university, an acceptance letter is issued. The visa application process begins after the
receipt of the acceptance letter. The consulate takes about 2-3 months to issue the visa to the
student. All in all, the entire process takes around 6 months before the student departs to the
overseas partner university.
In general, there is no scholarship offered for exchange programs. But sometimes, at DHPW in
Germany, students may be allowed to for a scholarship through the DHPW foundation.
However, the students can apply for the same only once they reach the country. The
scholarship grant is based on the available funding, the merit of the student, and strong
recommendations. The main reason for granting scholarships is that the tuition fee gets
waived off, as the students have already paid the tuition fee at Somaiya Vidyavihar University.
Do exchange students need to pay the entire tuition and hostel fee at K J Somaiya
Institute of Management even for the time they are away on exchange at the overseas
partner university?
The students must pay the tuition fee at K J Somaiya Institute of Management even for the time
they are away on exchange. However, students will not be charged any tuition fee by the
partner university. Students do not need to pay the hostel fee for the time they are away on
exchange as they have to move out of the hostel before they leave for exchange.
