Assignment 1

Deadline: 2023.3.3

Use Chemkin Pro to determine the adiabatic flame temperature and laminar
burning velocity of hydrocarbon/air flames with the variation of equivalence. Each
team has been assigned to determine the flame temperatures and burning
velocities of different hydrocarbon/air premixed flames.

Fuel assignment: propone (Team 1 & Team 5)、ethylene (Team 2 & Team 6)、
carbon monoxide (Team 3 & Team 7)、acetylene (Team 4 & Team 8).

1. Draw the figures of the laminar burning velocity and adiabatic flame
temperature of hydrocarbon/air premixed flames with various equivalence ratios
(0.6~1.4) for experimental and numerical results. (30%)

2. What is the value of maximum adiabatic flame temperature and laminar
burning velocity in your study case and in what equivalence ratio? (20%)

Maximum adiabatic flame temperature: 2687.199 Kelvin

Corresponding equivalence ratio: 1.405

Maximum burning velocity: 162.104 (cm/s)

Corresponding equivalence ratio: 1.235

3. You have a water-heating system and the furnace is fueled with methane,
running at stoichiometric methane/air condition. You would like to blend the
assigned hydrocarbon fuel with methane, i.e. 50% methane and 50% your
assigned fuel. What will it change in combustion? (30%) What can you do to
maintain the combustion efficiency of your water-heating system? (20%)
#What will it change in combustion? (30%)
First effect is when in stoichiometric condition methane/air system, fuel is
replaced with 50% methane and 50% some other assigned hydrocarbon
(lets say C2H6). The first effect is that new fuel will change C/H ratio (from
0.25 to 0.33). The increased C/H ratio will make the system deficient in air
and will lead to incomplete combustion. Thus the combustion will change
from stoichiometric to rich. Second effect is change in calorific value of
methane and ethane, so the heat release rate will be changed.
#What can you do to maintain the combustion efficiency of your water-
heating system? (20%)
To maintain the combustion efficiency of the water-heating system,
consider the following:
1. Adjust the air-to-fuel ratio: To ensure complete combustion of the
blended fuel, you may need to adjust the air-to-fuel ratio. The
stoichiometric ratio for methane combustion may not be the same as the
stoichiometric ratio for the blended fuel, and therefore, the amount of air
needed for complete combustion may need to be adjusted.
2. Monitor the flame temperature: A change in the composition of the fuel
may alter the flame temperature, which could affect the efficiency of the
heat transfer from the flame to the water. It is essential to monitor the
flame temperature and adjust the fuel mixture and air supply as needed to
maintain a consistent temperature.
3. Consider emissions: Blending the assigned hydrocarbon fuel with
methane could increase the emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen
oxides, and other pollutants. It is crucial to monitor the emissions and
adjust the fuel mixture and air supply as needed to maintain acceptable
levels.
4. Check for compatibility: It is important to ensure that the assigned
hydrocarbon fuel is compatible with the furnace and other components of
the water-heating system. Some fuels may cause corrosion or other
damage to the system if they are not compatible.

Reminder: everyone has to deliver individual homework but can share

identical numerical data.
