Methods of Test for Petroleum, Petroleum Products and Lubricants Sectional Committee, PCD 1

FOREWORD
This Indian Standard [P : 31] (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft
finalized by the Methods of Test for Petroleum, Petroleum Products and Lubricants Sectional Committee had
been approved by the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.
This standard was initially published based on Institute of Petroleum Standard No. IP 57/55 and ASTM Designation
D1322. First revision was carried out in 1968, as the test procedure has been improved, by IP and ASTM. In that
revision limits of precision of test results were modified in light of the improved procedure.
In this revision, considerable assistance has been derived from ISO 3014 : 1993 ‘Petroleum products —
Determination of the smoke point of kerosene’. This standard is modified mainly to extend the scope to include
other volatile liquid fuels including gas turbine (jet) fuels alongwith kerosene. Also, the definition of kerosene is
removed.
In reporting the results of a test or analysis shall be made in accordance with this standard, if the final value,
observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding
off numerical values (revised)’.

arising from this operation.
