SMART TEXTILES

B.Sc Fashion
Smart Textiles
The term ‘smart textiles’ is derived from intelligent or smart
materials. The concept ‘smart material’ was defined for the first
time in Japan in 1989. The first textile material that, in
retroaction, was labelled as a ‘smart textile’ was silk thread having
a shape memory effect
Smart textiles can be described as textiles that are able to sense
stimuli from the environment, to react to them and adapt to
them by integration of functionalities in the textile structure.
Some examples

UV protective clothing,
multilayer composite yarn and
textiles, plasma treated
clothing,
ceramic coated
textiles,
conductive fibers,
fabrics with optical sensors
Purpose
Smart textiles are smart systems that can
both perceive or communicate the
environmental conditions and can detect
and process the wearer's condition.
They can use electrical, heat,
mechanical, chemical, magnetic, and
other detection systems to detect them.
There are two types os smart textile :

Passive : Passive smart

textiles. Passive smart textiles
are just able to perceive the
data about the conditions or
stimuli of the
environment. Such type of
textile contains only sensors.
The
examples are UV protective
clothing, plasma treated
clothing, fabric with optical
sensors,
Active :
Active means clothes that
provide care, freshness,
comfort and protection for
your skin
plasma treated
clothing, ceramic
coated textiles,
conductive fibers, fabrics with
optical sensors, are some
examples of passive smart
textiles.
Ultra Smart Textile
Ultra smart textiles are materials that sense, react,
monitor, and adopt themselves according to the
stimuli or environmental conditions, such as
thermal, mechanical, chemical, magnetic, or
other sources.
Smart textiles are materials and structures that sense
and react to environmental conditions or stimuli,
such as those from mechanical, thermal, chemical,
electrical,
magnetic, or other sources. Textiles are materials that
can react on themselves, unlike ordinary clothes.

Brands using smart textiles

There are several UK-based companies
which have successfully integrated their
smart technical textile technology into
clothing and other consumer softgoods
Such as Berghaus

Berghaus Limited is a British outdoor clothing and

equipment brand founded in Newcastle upon Tyne, North
East England, and now headquartered in nearby
Sunderland.
