MESSAGE
We are forever grateful to the Most Rev. Abel C. APigo, D.D., for welcoming
us to host the Diocesan Clergy of Mindanao (DCM) 2023 Convention in
the Diocese of Mati, Mati City, Philippines. As we will be gathering together
(Synodality) it will become a celebration of gratitude and joy for the people
of God in Mindanao and beyond.
For the past few years, the absence of the DCM experience and encounter
were memorable since it provided us with an opportunity to live and share
“Fratelli Tutti” spirit and mission (Pope Francis) Ad Intra Ad Extra.
With the Holy Family (Joseph, Mary and Jesus) in the Midst, May one anf
Trine God strengthen our brotherly Priesthood towards Synodal
Communion, Mission and Participation.
Salamat!
(Bishop Abel)
HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF MATI
The early establishment and spiritual growth of the local church of Mati can be
traced back to the early Christian Spanish missionaries who brought the faith in this
part of the country. The early evangelization began in 1848 by the Augustinian
Recollects. After their presence the Jesuit missionaries followed in 1859 and served
for almost a century. Then in 1958 the Foreign Mission of Quebec came and the
Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers continued their work in 1968 which raised to a
flourishing vocations from the local people. the native clergy took over in 1978.
The fruits of the missionary effort became evident through the establishment of the
first parish in 1884, the San Salvador del Mundo Parish in Caraga. Subsequently
other parishes were established namely: Immaculate Conception Parish of Baganga
in 1885; the Saint James the Apostle Parish of Cateel in 1894; the Saint Francis
Xavier Parish of Manay in 1897; the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish of Mati in
1937; the Saint Vincent Ferrer Parish of Lupon in 1955; the Saint Francis Xavier
Parish of Sigaboy in 1963; the San Isidro Labrador Parish of Bato-bato in 1965;
San Isidro Labrador Parish of Banaybanay and San Pedro Claver Parish of
Tarragona in 1982. In which different Archdioceses and Prelatures took care to the
spiritual needs of the people of the said parishes.
In 1980, Due to the vast area of the prelature of Tagum that comprises the provinces
of Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro. The good Bishop Pedro
Dean, DD petitioned the Holy See Pope John Paul II for the creation of the new
Diocese in which the territory shall be carved out from the territory of the Prelature
of Tagum. Seeing the pastoral need and considering the spiritual welfare of the
faithful, the Holy Father approved the elevation of the Prelature of Tagum to
Diocese of Tagum on October 11, 1980 and in February 16, 1984 granting the
creation of the Diocese of Mati That comprised the civil jurisdiction of the province
of Davao Oriental. And appointing the late Most Rev. Patricio H. Alo, DD as the
shepherd of this new Local Church.
As a new Diocese, burning with deep desire to the mission entrusted by Christ to
his Church, new Parishes was created to cater the spiritual and pastoral needs of the
faithful souls namely: the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish of Boston in 1986; the
Sto. Rosario Parish of Calapagan in 1992; San Ignacio de Loyola Parish of Luzon
and Nuestra Berhen de Guia Parish of Dawan in 1994; the Sacred Heart Parish of
Dahican in 1997; the San Ignacio de Loyola Parish of San Ignacio and the Sto.
Nino Parish of Kinablangan in 2000; the Divine Mercy Parish of Madang in 2006;
the Sacred Heart Parish of Lambajon in 2010 and the San Antonio de Padua Quasi
Parish in 2020.
At present, the local Church of Mati is under the pastoral care of the Most Rev.
Abel C. Apigo, DD, the second shepherd of this local church having with him to
assist in the adminstrations of sacraments, pastoral and social needs of the faithful
souls are the 46 Diocesan Priests, 1 deacon, 10 religious priests and the different
religious women.
Despite the continuing challenges of our time today, the Local Church of Mati with
the collaboration of the laity and the deep sacramental brotherhood of the
prebyterium is dedicated to enflesh the vision and mission of the Diocese to the
next generation of Christians.

Mark 8: 14- 21
Jesus calls the Pharisees and Herodians “yeast.: it’s an evocative image, but
may be unfamiliar to those who don’t do much baking. (Yeast leavens
baked goods, such as bread, making them rise. A very small amount of
yeast can leaven a large amount of bread pervading the other ingredients).
In the same way, hate, distrust, and anger can pervade relationships,
destroying them from the inside out. Jesus cautions his disciples to be aware
of the effects of such damaging yeast. Instead, we need to keep our eyes;
ears and minds open for opportunities to love those we meet as Jesus loves
us. This is the heart of Jesus’s often misunderstood mission.

Text: Eleanor Farjeon, 1981-1965
1. Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the
first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them
springing fresh from the Word!
2. Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from leaven, like the first dew fall on the
first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in
completeness where his feet pass.
3. Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning, born of the one light Eden say
play! Praise with elation, praise every morning, God’s recreation of the new
day!

DAY 2: HOLY MASS
Venue: Techno Park
National Road, Dahican, City of Mati, Davao Oriental
Time: 11:00 am
Presider: Most Rev. Moises Cuevas, DD
Apostolic Administrator, Archdiocese of Zamboanga
READINGS:
Genesis 8: 6- 13. 20- 22
Psalm 116: 12-13. 14- 15. 18- 19.
Mark 8: 22- 26
Noah is great model for all these virtues. Directed by God to build and fill
the ark, he persisted in the effort, trusting in God’s word despite the
mocking of his neighbours. Once in the ark, he and his family waited
patiently through the forty days of rain and the days that it took for the
earth to dry. He persevered, sending the dove out time and time again,
waiting until the land was dry and once again suitable for people to live
there.
When faced with the difficulties of life we, like Noah, can rely on
persistence, patience and perseverance, grounded in our trust of God who
always keeps his promises.

The bread of life and the chalice of salvation,
Giving thanks that you held us worthy
To be in your presence and minster to you.

Have mercy on all, we pray,
That with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
With Saint Joseph, he spouse
With all the blessed Apostles,
And all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,

READINGS:
Genesis 9: 1-13
Psalm 106: 16-18. 19-21. 29. 22-23.
Mark 8: 27-33
But the contrast lies only on the surface. Digging more deeply. We see that
these readings say the same thing. God will always reach out to save the
people he has called to himself. he did it for Noah and his family and God
will do it for us. but this salvation comes at a cost. Jesus had to accept
rejection, suffering, and death in order to destroy death forever. Any
attempt to hide from that reality, to make God what we want to be, comes
from the father of lies. It is sure to fail.
