LITERARY DEVICES
Is any specific aspect of
literature, or a particular
work, which we can
recognize, identify,
interpret and/or analyze.
Both literary elements
and literary techniques
can rightly be called
literary devices.
SIMILE- comparisons
between two unrelated and
dissimilar things, people,
beings, places, and
concepts. It is marked by
the use of the words ‘as’ or
‘such as’ or ‘like’.
Example:
“My bounty is as
boundless as the sea, My
love as deep; the more I
give to thee, The more I
have, for both are infinite.”
METAPHOR- is a
comparison of two things
that are basically
dissimilar in which one is
described in terms of the
other.
Example:
 Life is a highway.
“heart of stone”
PERSONIFICATION- is a
figure of speech in which
an object , abstract idea ,
or animal is given human
characteristics.

Example:
“Arise, fair sun, and kill
the envious moon, Who is
already sick and pale with
grief, That thou, her maid,
art far more fair than she.”
FORSHADOWING-
refers to the use of
indicative words phrases
and hints that set the stage
for a story to unfold and
give the reader a hint of
something that is going to
happen.
Example:
He had no idea of the
disastrous chain of events
to follow.
RHYME SCHEME- based
at the end of the lines and
prose or poetry refers to
the order in which
particular words rhyme.
Example:
“Her face is like a
porcelain.”
Roses are red (A)
 Violets are blue (B)
Beautiful they may
be(C)
But I love you (B)
HYPERBOLE- is
exaggeration for emphasis;
overstatement.
Example:
I’m so hungry I could eat a
horse.
I have told you a million
times not to lie!
OXYMORON- it allows
the author to use
contradictory contrasting
concepts placed together
in a manner that actually
ends up making sense in a
strange and slightly
complex manner and helps
perceive a deeper level of
truth.
Example:
He possessed a cold fire in
his eyes.
Sometimes we cherish
things of little value.
