[Criterion B – Investigating pattern (all strands), Criterion C – Communicating (strand ii)]
1. A sequence is given as −1, 1, 7, 17, …
a) Write a general explicit formula to represent the sequence.
b) Using the formula in 1 a) find the:
(i) 7th term of the sequence.
(ii) the position (n) of the term which has a value of 287.
2
2. Find the sum of the first four terms of the arithmetic sequence 𝑈𝑛 = 𝑈𝑛−1 − √2 , 𝑈1 = 2 for 𝑛 ≥ 2.
√2
Give your answer in the simplest form.
3. Given the number pattern: −3, −6, −9, −12, −15, …
a) Write a general explicit formula to represent the number pattern.
b) Using the formula in 3 a) find the:
(i) 12th term of the sequence.
(ii) the position (n) of the term which has a value of −243
4. The twentieth term of an arithmetic sequence is 28. If the sum of its third and sixth terms is greater than its
ninth term by 8, find the:
a) first term of the sequence
b) common difference of the sequence
c) the sum of the first 20 terms of the sequence Good Luck!
