History of Ethiopian large red chilli (Also called Berbere by the way)

While historians do not know much about Ethiopian cuisine prior to the 13th century, it is
believed that berbere seasoning came about around 5 BC. Berbere is the Ethiopian word for

2
“pepper.” Its arrival was at a point in Ethiopia’s history when Ethiopians ruled the Red Sea
Route to the Silk Road. This gave their traders access to spices from China, including black
pepper and ginger. These spices would find their way to Ethiopian spice merchants and
from them to local cooks. The result is the current mix that we know as berbere. Like most
ancient spice blends, there is no one recipe. Ingredients and flavor profiles differ from
region to region and even from household to household.

Berbere seasoning flavor profile

The berbere spice blend contains multiple spices that each bring their own complex flavors
and fragrances to the mix. Because there are so many variants of the blend, there is no
universal flavor profile; however, the most common ingredients add both warmth and
sweetness to dishes. While many blends are blisteringly hot, some are able to deliver earthy
notes along with the heat.

Health benefits of berbere spice blend

The berbere spice blend contains various spices, each of which provides nutritious
compounds like:

 Vitamins: Chili peppers are the main component of berbere spice, and they are rich
in vitamins A and C. Both vitamins are potent antioxidants that help to protect the
body from damaging free radicals. Vitamin A is also necessary for vision support and
for a functioning immune system. Vitamin C’s other benefits include the fact that your
body needs it to make serotonin as well as collagen, which your body uses to generate
various tissues. The fenugreek in berbere spice is a rich source of riboflavin, which is
also known as vitamin B2. Your body uses riboflavin to maintain skin health and for
increasing energy levels.
 Minerals: Berbere seasoning also contains fenugreek, which is rich in iron, copper and
other minerals. Your body uses iron and copper to make hemoglobin and copper may
also be an antioxidant.
 Dietary fiber: Fenugreek seeds are an excellent source of fiber with a 100 g serving
able to provide more than half of your daily requirement. Carom seeds and nigella

3
seeds are both included in many berbere spice blends; these are also excellent
sources of fiber. Fiber is good for both cardiovascular and intestinal health.

Bishoftu Baltena Production Business Plan – SWOT Analysis

Our intention of starting our Baltena Production Business by supplying supermarkets and Shop
stores as well as for different Hotels & Restaurants in and around Bishoftu is to test run the
business for a period of 3 to 5 years to know if we will invest more money, expand the business
and then supply our Baltena Production Business by supplying supermarkets and Shop stores
as well as for different Hotels & Restaurants in and around Bishoftu and Key Cities in the States
of Ethiopia.

We are quite aware that there are several large scale, medium scale and small scale Baltena
Production companies all over Ethiopia in the same location where we intend locating ours,
which is why we are following the due process of establishing a business.

We know that if a proper SWOT analysis is conducted for our business, we will be able to
position our business to maximize our strength, leverage on the opportunities that will be
available to us, mitigate our risks and be welled equipped to confront our threats.

This is the summary of the SWOT analysis that was conducted for Bishoftu Micro Enterprise
Company .

1. Strength:

Our location, the business model we will be operating on varieties of payment options, different
sizes of well – packaged Berbere powder and our excellent customer service culture will
definitely count as a strong strength for Bishoftu Micro Enterprise Company. So also, we have a
management team that has what it takes to grow startup business from survival to profitability
within the shortest time – frame.

2. Weakness:

A major weakness that may count against us is the fact that we are a new Berbere powder
production company – business and we don’t have the financial capacity to compete with multi
million birr chains other Baltena production companies who are already determining the

11
direction of the market as it relates to the sale and supply of Baltena production all across the
country.

3. Opportunities:

The fact that we are going to be operating our Baltena production company one of our partners
Tayework Adane provides us with unlimited opportunities to sell our well Baltena production
to a large number of people. We have been able to conduct thorough feasibility studies and
market survey and we are well positioned to take on the opportunities that will come our way.

4. Threat:

Just like any other business, one of the major threats that we are likely going to face is economic
downturn. It is a fact that economic downturn affects purchasing / spending power. Another
threat that may likely confront us is the arrival of a previous Baltena production company in
same location where ours is located.

Bishoftu Baltena Production Business Plan – Market Analysis

 Market Trends

Most companies that are into Baltena productions are becoming more creative when it comes
to packaging and branding their Baltena productions. The truth is that, if you can successful
package and brand your Baltena productions to meet the standards; you can indeed
successfully export your products to other countries of the world. There are Baltena
productions brands that can be found in supermarkets all across the globe.

The industry has also thrived by developing products at price points attractive enough to
weather the slow recovery, resulting in strong revenue growth. As a result of this, these trends
are expected to continue and contribute to revenue growth going forward.

 Our Target Market

One thing about Baltena productions and similar products is that you can hardly find someone
who don’t patronize them. As a matter of fact, it is difficult to enter into a standard supermarket
or shop store without finding Baltena productions.

12
In view of that, we have positioned our Baltena production company to service (supply)
supermarkets, shop stores and other outlets all across Ethiopia .

We have conducted our market research and we have ideas of what our target market would be
expecting from us. We are in business to retail our well packaged Baltena productions to the
following groups of people and businesses;

 Supermarkets
 Shop Stores
 Hotels
 Restaurants
 Households

 Our Competitive Advantage

A close study of the Baltena production industry reveals that the market has become much
more intensely competitive over the last decade. As a matter of fact, you have to be highly
creative, customer centric and proactive if you must survive in this industry. We are aware of
the stiffer competition and we are well prepared to compete favorably with other Baltena
production companies in Ethiopia.

Bishoftu Micro Enterprise is launching a standard Baltena production business that will indeed
become the preferred choice of residence and businesses in Ethiopia where we intend selling /
supplying our products.

Our location, the business model we will be operating on varieties of payment options,
different sizes of well packaged Berbere powder and our excellent customer service culture

Bishoftu Baltena Production Business Plan – Sales & Marketing Strategy

 Sources of Income

Bishoftu Micro Enterprise is in business to operate a standard Baltena production company in

Ethiopia. We are in the food production to maximize profits and we are going to go all the way
out to ensure that we achieve or business goals and objectives. In essence, our source of income
will be the retailing and supply of well packaged Baltena productions.

 Sales Forecast

One thing is certain when it comes to Baltena production business, if you are able to cut cost of
production, pay attention to branding and packaging and you able to build a strong distribution
network, you are sure of generating good sales and of course make good profits from the
business.

We are well positioned to take on the available market in Ethiopia and we are quite optimistic
that we will meet our set target of generating enough income / profits from the first six month
of operations and grow the business .

We have been able to critically examine the Baltena production industry and we have analyzed
our chances in the industry and we have been able to come up with the following sales forecast.
The sales projections are based on information gathered on the field and some assumptions
that are peculiar to similar startups in Ethiopia.

Below are the sales projection for Bishoftu Micro Enterprise, it is based on the location of our
business and other factors as it relates to Baltena production business start ups in the Ethiopia;

First Fiscal Year-: $120,000

Second Fiscal Year-: $250,000

14
Third Fiscal Year-: $750,000

N.B: This projection is done based on what is obtainable in the industry and with the
assumption that there won’t be any major economic meltdown and there won’t be any major
competitor offering same products and customer care services as we do within same location.
Please note that the above projection might be lower and at the same time it might be higher.

Marketing and Sales Strategy

Before choosing a location for launching Bishoftu Micro Enterprise, we conduct a thorough
market survey and feasibility studies in order for us to be able to be able to penetrate the
available market and become the preferred choice for residence and businesses in Ethiopia. We
have detailed information and data that we were able to utilize to structure our business to
attract the numbers of customers we want to attract per time.

We hired experts who have good understanding of the Baltena production industry to help us
develop marketing strategies that will help us achieve our business goal of winning a larger
percentage of the available market in Ethiopia.

In other to continue to be in business and grow, we must continue to sell and supply our
Baltena production which is why we will go all out to empower or sales and marketing team to
deliver. In summary, Peter Bishoftu Micro Enterprise will adopt the following sales and
marketing approach to win customers over;

 Introduce our Baltena production company by sending introductory letters alongside our
brochure to supermarkets, shop stores, Hotels, households and Restaurant in Ethiopia.
 Make use of attractive hand bills to create awareness and also to give direction to where
customers can get our Baltena production

Bishoftu Baltena Production Business Plan – Publicity and Advertising Strategy

Despite the fact that we are going to be starting on a small scale supplying our Baltena
production to supermarkets and shop stores in Ethiopia, we will still go ahead to intensify
publicity for the business. We are going to explore all available means to promote Bishoftu
Micro Enterprise.

15
Bishoftu Micro Enterprise has a long-term plan of supplying our Baltena production to
supermarkets and shop stores all around Ethiopia which is why we will deliberately build our
brand to be well accepted in Bishoftu before venturing out.

As a matter of fact, our publicity and advertising strategy is not solely for winning customers
over but to effectively communicate our brand. Here are the platforms we intend leveraging on
to promote and advertise Bishoftu Micro Enterprise;

 Place adverts on community based newspapers, radio stations and TV stations.

 Encourage the use of word of mouth publicity from our loyal customers
 Leverage on the internet and social media platforms like; YouTube, Instagram, Facebook,
Twitter, Google+ and other platforms to promote our business.
 Distribute our fliers and handbills in target areas in and around our neighborhood
 Contact supermarkets, shop stores, Hotels, households, Restaurants and event planners by
calling them up and informing them of Bishoftu Micro Enterprise and the product we sell

 Our Pricing Strategy

Pricing is one of the key factors that gives leverage to products such as Baltena productions, it is
normal for consumers to go to places where they can purchase at a cheaper price which is why
big players in the Baltena production industry will continue to attract loads of consumers.

We know we don’t have the capacity to compete with bigger and well established chains of
Baltena production companies, but we will ensure that the prices of our well packaged Baltena
productions are competitive with what is obtainable in the Ethiopian market.

 Payment Options

The payment policy adopted by Bishoftu Micro Enterprise is all inclusive because we are quite
aware that different customers prefer different payment options as it suits them but at the
same time, we will ensure that we ruled by the financial rules and regulation of the Ethiopia.

Here are the payment options that Bishoftu Micro Enterprise will make available to our clients;

 Payment via bank transfer

 Payment with cash

16
 Payment via check
 Payment via mobile money transfer

In view of the above, we have chosen banking platforms that will enable our client make
payment for the purchase of our Baltena products without any stress on their part. Our bank
account numbers will be made available on promotional materials to clients who may want to
deposit cash or make online transfer for our Baltena products.

 Start – Up Expenditure (Budget)

In setting up any business, the amount or cost will depend on the approach and scale you want
to undertake. If you intend to go big by renting a place, then you would need a good amount of
capital as you would need to ensure that your employees are well taken care of, and that your
facility is conducive enough for workers to be creative and productive.

This means that the start-up can either be low or high depending on your goals, vision and
aspirations for your business.

The tools and equipment that will be used are nearly the same cost everywhere, and any
difference in prices would be minimal and can be overlooked. As for the detailed cost analysis
for starting a Berbere Powder production company; it might differ in other countries due to the
value of their money.

These are the key areas where we will spend our start – up capital on;

Shawul, Ephrem Alamirew & Tayework Adane.. We do not intend to welcome any external
business partner, which is why we have decided to restrict the sourcing of the start – up capital

 Generate part of the start – up capital from personal savings

 Source for soft loans from family members and friends
 Apply for loan from Bank

N.B: We have been able to generate about $100,000 (Personal savings $80,000 and soft loan

Bishoftu Baltena Production Business Plan – Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

The future of a business lies in the numbers of loyal customers that they have, the capacity and
competence of the employees, their investment strategy and the business structure. If all of
these factors are missing from a business (company), then it won’t be too long before the
business close shop.

One of our major goals of starting Bishoftu Micro Enterprise is to build a business that will
survive off its own cash flow without the need for injecting finance from external sources once
the business is officially running. We know that one of the ways of gaining approval and
winning customers over is to sell and supply our well prepared and well packaged Baltena

19

survive on lower profit margin for a while.

Bishoftu Micro Enterprise will make sure that the right foundation, structures and processes
are put in place to ensure that our staff welfare are well taken of.
