Truths about God and about us:

 We were created in union with God/without pain and suffering, but we aren’t anymore
 The Babylonians would say “it’s the gods” fault because humans have no control
 Hebrews take responsibility
 Our original parents’ sin, their greed, pride and selfishness separated us from God and
from each other
 This “human condition” of separation from God is passed down to us somehow – like
DNA

Original Sin:
 From the Latin “origo” (“birth”)
 Because Adam and Eve sinned, all humans are born into a state of separation from God.
(Christians believe that Jesus lets us return unity with God).

Two meanings:
 Adam and Eve’s sin, when they disobeyed God, followed their own will, lost their
Original Holiness, and became subject to pain/suffering/death
 The fallen state of human nature that affects every human, except Jesus and Mary

 Concupiscence -- the tendency of all human beings to sin

Types of Sin:
 Personal sin against God
 Personal sin against others/creation
 Communal sin against God
 Communal sin against others/creation
