Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has

dramatically changed the higher education system in the Philippines with a

distinctive shift in online instruction as an effort to limit further

transmission of the virus. This sudden change to online instruction raised

concern among many teachers and students because a large segment of

the population has unstable internet access and limited electronic devices

(Pastor, 2020; Mirandilla-Santos, 2016).

Online lectures are not very common in most universities in the

Philippines and chemistry lectures are generally given in classroom

settings. The COVID-19 pandemic undeniably accelerated the process of

transition to full online instruction and provided opportunities to carry out

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

effective online teaching. It is worthwhile to examine if the implemented

DLPCA strategy is an effective method for full online instruction. By

collecting the experiences of the authors and students who have worked

and studied during the COVID-19 pandemic, we aim to provide a better

understanding on how the DLPCA strategy enabled teachers and students

to rise to the challenges of online instruction given the resources and

technologies present at the time.

Specifically, we investigated three important aspects of online

instruction, namely: (i) online content delivery strategy, (ii) learning

mechanisms (synchronous and asynchronous), and (iii) assessment type

and strategies. The results presented in this paper will provide a

preliminary basis on the adaption of DLPCA strategy in online

undergraduate Analytical chemistry and Physical chemistry courses and

will help build a strong foundation for future pedagogical decisions

regarding online instruction.

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

 5

As the immediate future is uncertain with new outbreaks and looming

lockdowns, many instructors had to consider online instruction, which can

be given in one of three pedagogical approaches: (1) synchronous, (2)

asynchronous and (3) blended learning strategy. In synchronous online

lectures (real-time), instructors and students meet online using video

conferencing software during the designated class hours and instructors

give lectures on the course. Students participate in the lectures and are

able to ask questions vocally or via live text chat. In

asynchronous lectures, instructors record lecture videos and upload

them in Blackboard learning management system (LMS) or YouTube, so

that students can access them in their most convenient time.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of

online learning to the Grade 11 students of STI College San Jose Del Monte

Bulacan.
STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

1. What is the Demographic Profile of the respondents in terms of:

    1.  1. Gender

    1.  2. Grade level

    1.  3. Strand

2. What are the ways they use to manage their time effectively?

3. How they cope up with the struggles of unstable internet connection?

DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms are operationally defined as used in this study:

Asynchronous lectures is a general term used to describe forms of

education, instruction, and learning that do not occur in the same place or

at the same time.

Effectiveness is the degree to which something is successful in

producing a desired result; success.

Gadget is a small mechanical device, can be also referred as a tool

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Internet is a global computer network providing a variety of

information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected

networks using standardized communication protocols.

Online Learning is education that takes place over the Internet. It is

often referred to as “e- learning” among other terms.

Synchronous lectures are lectures and course lessons that occur

live through video conferencing software. Specified times when students

and instructors “meet” online to discuss course content, answer

questions.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

Studying the current situation of learners through online education

at STI SJDM students may lead to the following:

Increased Government relating Education understanding to the

needs of the youth, where the national officials can help students for an
STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

example like cash assistance, gadgets from government distributed to the

ones who needed it, and more. Higher appreciation to the hardworking

students pursuing to handle and balance their education and time

management should be known for the criticism in online education.

Online Learning makes student to be in control in their preferred

studying path. The word Self-discipline will be applied to learners as them

being in charge of making their own learning process. They would

schedule their time to study in the time that they are comfortable work

efficiently. Where it is also beneficial for the teachers since they are no

longer solely responsible for learners’ success or failure. Extra time can be

used to work on other projects, one after another. If the student is likely to

spend the time more on himself and less on the course he would adjust

and do finish all the works at a short period of time, which is the most

routine these days.

Online education is so convenient, students can learn at anytime

and anywhere which is unlikely to the face to face classes. You don’t need
STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

to wake up early just to commute and to spend money to go school on

time. You can take it everywhere using your own devices that should meet

the requirements on going online. The teachers and the students who

choose this type of learning are likely busy people and don’t have much

time to do things so this is the best learning suited to go. We will see the

progress difference between the types of learning and the difference on

how they handle and manage.

This study helps the school and the students to know what needs to

be lessened or improve at their performances and capability. Through data

analysis that this research will provide, future researchers may explore

other capabilities and possibilities. Through this research the community

will further realize promoting the use of online learning especially these

days.

Parents and students may consider this learning type or related

programs as the better way of learning for their kids that’ll benefit them.

They would also know how was this plays a part of students, on how the
STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

10

better they can do, and what would be the approaches of learners.

Academic Institutions and administrators may promote programs and

advocacies regarding giving the students their needs in online learning

that can help them do better performance in class. Online learning is

certainly the more effective option for students, especially that it is better

for the environment.

E-learning has transformed the educational sector by enabling

students to share information and data in a relatively easy way. Students

learn more than they do in traditional courses, it gives full control over

their own learning, and they are able to work at their own speed.

Retention rates are higher with online learning, the more engaging

multimedia content, more control over how would they take in their

project and materials. Different schools that conduct E-Learning may have

access this research for their own way of being knowledgeable to their

own purposes of visiting. We are hoping that this study would help
STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

researchers and institutions to improve this learning process and should

be carried out.   11

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on the effectiveness of the online learning. The

Internet has made online learning possible, and many researchers and

educators are interested in online learning to enhance and improve

student learning outcomes while combating the reduction in resources,

particularly in higher education. It is imperative that researchers and

educators consider the effectiveness of online learning compared to

traditional face-to-face format and the factors that influence the

effectiveness of online courses. This study examines the evidence of the

effectiveness of online learning by the data collection that will be

conducted to 30 randomly selected grade 11 students of STI college San

Jose Del Monte Bulacan.

This study will not cover other problems but only the

Effectiveness of Online learning. Each of the respondents is given the same

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

questionnaires to answer. The study would be done through the utilization

of questionnaire to the students as a survey and reference. The main

12

source of data will be the questionnaire which is prepared by the

researchers.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter contains gathered related literature and studies of

different authors which the researchers look upon for the purpose of

better understanding of this research undertaking.

The Benefits of Online Learning this Pandemic

There is plenty of research to suggest that online learning can be beneficial

for people who have access to technology. In fact, a Research Institute of

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

America study reported that e-learners retained 25-60% of what they

learned instead of 8-10% by students in conventional set-ups.

13

An IBM survey also found that participants could cover nearly 5 times

more material through online learning without increasing their study

time.

According to Sweha Hazari (2021) the effectiveness of online

learning stems from the fact that students can revisit their difficult lessons

in their own time. Online courses provide a safer alternative to

conventional classrooms. They help you protect yourself and your family

from the virus.

The flexibility attached to online learning allows you to cater to your

priorities in an uncertain world and juggle your family commitments and

career goals.

Online learning can often resemble having your own, personal tutor. You

don’t get distracted by your classmates and you can set the pace of the
STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

lessons as per your comfort level. Online learning can be efficient as

conventional teaching. Since your tests and quizzes can be graded

instantly, you can receive feedback and results immediately and this

14

allows you to improve and focus on your weaknesses.

Online learning saves extra charges such as physical textbooks, commuting

and accommodation fees. Online learning is more affordable. Online

education can help you continually invest in your education and keep up

with the changing world.

Effectiveness of Online Learning System as Supplemental Pedagogical

Tool

The College of Computer Studies of Misamis University, Philippines,

developed the supplemental on-line learning system named Misamis

University – On-line Learning Environment (MU-OLE). It was established to

supplement classroom learning in all information technology and

computer science subjects.

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The MU-OLE has effectively served as a supplemental tool for

teaching and learning among students and teachers. Teachers may

consider strategies in delivering lessons and activities without

15

compromising the students’ attendance and behavior in classes.

Teachers need to strategize to effectively and efficiently monitor

students’ outputs to avoid students’ tendency to plagiarize. The teachers

have to develop classroom policies to maintain students’ perfect

attendance in both the traditional classroom and online settings.

How Students cope with the challenges of online learning during

pandemic

In Fawaz et al.’s (2021) study, student’s difficulties, and confinement. To

cope up with these problems, students actively dealt with the situation by

seeking help from their teachers and relatives and engaging in recreational

activities. These active-oriented coping mechanisms of students were

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

aligned with Carter et al.’s (2020), who explored students’ self-regulation

strategies.

16

An effective blended online teaching and learning strategy during the

COVID-19 pandemic

University of Santo Thomas presented an online strategy that facilitated

the transition from traditional face-to-face learning to full online

instruction. This is a five-component blended learning strategy referred to

as Discover, Learn, Practice, Collaborate and Assess (DLPCA). In DLPCA, the

asynchronous part of the teaching was achieved through broadcast of pre-

recorded lecture videos on YouTube to allow students to study and

progress with learning at their own pace. The synchronous part of the

teaching was conducted using video conferencing platforms, such as

Zoom, Google Meet, and MS Teams. The DLPCA strategy was presented

and discussed to the students prior to its implementation. The analysis of

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

the teaching and learning experience based on three indicators (i)

student’s learning experience, (ii) student’s academic performance and (iii)

instructor observations showed that DLPCA had a positive impact on

students and instructors. This strategy is considered a manageable and

17

effective alternative that can be adapted to full online instructions.

Chapter 3

METHODS

This chapter presents methods and procedure, whom the

researchers applied to gather the needed data. It includes the research

design, population, sampling method, and data collection procedure.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The phenomenology will be employed in this study to evaluate

the possible impacts of the effectiveness of online learning on the Grade

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

11 students of STI San Jose Del Monte through the usage of the proper

data collection technology.

According to Creswell W. (2013), the phenomenology understanding of

human experiences requires immersive penetration.

18

POPULATION

The target respondents of the study were thirty (30) Grade 11

students of STI College San Jose Del Monte Bulacan. Having two (2)

respondents from Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM)  and

Tourism Operations (TO) respectively, three (3) from General Academic

Strand (GAS), four (4) from Digital Arts, five (5) from Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS), and seven (7) from both Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Mobile App & Web

Development (MAWD).

SAMPLING METHOD
STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Research studies involves a particular group of participants and

researchers intend on answering a general question to a selected people

from Grade 11 students in STI College of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan.

Therefore, the main aim of the research is to be able to generalize and

extend their results beyond those who participate.

19

However, the selection of participants is very crucial when

planning research, so researchers use a small group of individuals to make

it easier to collect data. The sample surveys are used to represent the

population. Researchers use a sampling technique to select the

participants for their sample.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

For the data collection we chose the survey questionnaire

online form because it is the most convenient of all procedures especially

that we are in a pandemic and to be safe at home. As our research has

been approved, we sent survey questionnaires to some of the Grade 11

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

students of STI San Jose Del Monte Bulacan. Answers from them will be

the content and main point of our research.

We explained the study to those who will be answering the

survey questionnaire and we make sure that participants correspond to

their predefined criteria. We collected the data by means of a survey

20

Questionnaire comprised of their age, gender, and year, level, and student

status. After the respondents have taken the survey, the data were

checked, tallied, interpreted, and analyzed.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

This Chapter presents the conclusion and

recommendations that are formulated by the researchers.

CONCLUSIONS

The study revealed that most of the students are

encountering difficulties with the sudden change of education

during the COVID-19 pandemic, on the other hand the results of

the study showed how the respondents manage to overcome

those difficulties.

30

In addition, this study examined the effectiveness of online

learning to the students of grade 11 in STI College of San Jose

Del Monte Bulacan and it also helps the school and the students

to know what they need to improve about their capabilities and

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

performances. The study therefore concluded that there are

factors that affect students’ satisfaction and performance

regarding online classes.

Because of this unending pandemic, all the enrolled

students must study online that uses internet connection for

their safety, so the result of this research can be useful to all the

students that will be studying through online.

RECOMMENDATION

One future research suggestion is to conduct a study at the

31

beginning of the class in which the course is taught. Further

collaborative information can be collected for a more accurate

comparison, and a separate survey or test could provide more

information about the children's overall development. More

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

research into the use, efficacy, and advancement of online

teaching and learning is needed. There is currently a significant

gap, and future research should focus on a more in-depth study

of online instruction approaches, process implementation, and

the most effective practices for online course design and

instruction.

This research suggests that we should be more aware of

what type of learning we must choose. Having this in mind

32

would make you or your kid have a better relationship with

education. You must choose the type of learning that best suits

your time management and attitude. In this way it will be

enjoyable to study while also having fun. At these days, mostly

STI COLLEGES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

the online education is the best surely learning option that is

best for everyone and that is what we suggest because we can

listen and learn to discussions of our teachers, and do activities

so flexible to send through online application.
