FIELD WORK DCC20063 – ENGINEERING SURVEYING

APPENDEX 2

TITLE : ELECTRONIC DISTANCE MEASUREMENT (TRAVERSE EDM)

OBJECTIVE : Conduct traverse survey

EQUIPMENTS :

1) EDM Equipment
2) Tripod
3) Prisms
4) Picket
5) Hammer

PROCEDURES:

1) Conduct a field reconnaissance at the area that has been determined by lecturer

2) Establish minimum 3 control station ( Station 1,2,3,4 and etc.) by using wooden pegs and hammer.

3) Organize the procedure and method of traversing base on figure below.

4) Prepared a total station tool on station 2, a prism on the prism pole on station 1 and a prism on the
tripod in station 3.
5) Set the initial bearing by taking the assumed bearing of line 2 – 1 as 50˚ 00' 00 ˝, at the intersection
left and measure the distance 2 - 1. Observe the number 2 - 3 on the left crossing and also measure
the distance 2 - 3.
6) Set the starting bering of line 2 – 1 as 230˚ 00' 00 ˝ ( i.e. 180˚ 00' 00 ˝ + 50˚ 00' 00 ˝ ) at the
intersection right On the right cross the distance does not need to be measured.
7) Move the tool to station 3 and attach the prisms to stations 2 and 4. On the left crosshair, set the
bering 3 -2.Averaged and observed 3 - 4 bering and measure the distance. Repeat the bering
observation using the right crosshair.
8) Repeat the process until the total station tool will occupy the last station at station 1. At position
this, the distance 1 - 2 is no longer measured, unless only bering is observed.

Sample table : Bering observation booking

9) Each group must complete the field book and traverse adjustment.

I. The finished barrage will be adjusted for bearing and distance. Allowed bering difference is 0˚ 01'
15 ˝,that is, the bering difference is read at the starting line which is 2 -1 and the last bering is read
at 1 – 2.
ii. The estimate for the distance is determined according to the following steps:
a. Calculate the latitude and longitude for each line.
b. Sum positive latitude (north) and negative latitude (south), positive dipat (east) and
negative dipat (west).
c. Calculate the difference between positive and negative sums for latit and dipat. This
difference is called the difference in latitude (dL) and dipat difference (dD)
d. The distance measurement error is expressed as ED = dL2 + dD2
e. Tikaian lurus = ED
Jumlah jarak

iii. Correction of Latit and Dipat - For the purpose of subsequent calculations, the value of the
difference in latitude and dipat must be corrected so that the amount of positive and negative is
the same i.e. there is no difference in latitude and dipat. There are two methods of correction,
a. The bowditch method
b. Transit method

10) Measure and plot traverse survey work using related software.

FIELD WORK 3(a)

TITLE : SETTING OUT (FIELD WORK TO CHECK DRAIN OF THE EXISTING STRUCTURE)

OBJECTIVE : To find the value of slope a drain.

EQUIPMENTS :

1) Levelling Equipment
2) Tripod
3) Levelling Staff
4) Levelling Bubble

DURATION : 2 week (4 hours)

PROCEDURES:

Revisions is made to the completed drainage system including the slope , depth , breadth and level
inverted for the drainage of the ground floor .

1) Apply the series levelling procedures until the drain site. The data are booking in the Rise or
Fall/Collimation Form

2) Check the value of slope of drain from staff 1 until staff 2 use the levelling equipment.

3) Do the field work levelling for get the staff reading and get difference height between (CH) on the
invert.

FIELD WORK 3(b)

TITLE : SETTING OUT (Building Basement)

OBJECTIVE : i) Conduct a setting out survey.

ii) Observe the setting out points based on proposed setting out plan.

EQUIPMENTS :

5) Total Station
6) Tripod
7) Prism
8) Mini Prism
9) Hammer
10) Measure Tape
11) Picket

DURATION: 1 week (3 hours)

WORK PROCEDURES:

1. Based on building plan provided by lecturer, conduct setting out for building basement. Figure
1.1.

Figure 1.1 Proposed Setting Out Plan

2. A theodolite or total station is set up over a control point which has known co-ordinates.
3. The instrument is then pointed at another control point in order to orientate the instrument to
the north. If a conventional theodolite is being used it normal to turn the instrument to the
north and reset the horizontal angle to zero.
4. The distances and bearings from that control point to those points which require setting out
are now located and fixed with pegs.
5. A control point which is located near to the structure to be set out will ensure maximum
accuracy.
6. If a total station is used the co-ordinates are entered into the software and the prism target will
allow the bearing and distance to be located for each point.
7. If a conventional theodolite is used the co-ordinates of the control point are compared with
those of each point to be set out. This will require whole circle bearings and distances to be
calculated for each point.
8. The procedure is then to simply turn to the required bearing and measure the distance
ensuring that the tape is held as near horizontal as possible
