Press Statement: Condemnation of the Cancellation of University Drag Show Due to Pretext

Amarillo, TX— Smile Big Texas is deeply disappointed and concerned by the recent
cancellation of the on-campus West Texas A&M University charity drag show event, which was
scheduled to take place on 03/31/2023. It has come to our attention that the event was canceled
due to pressure from the University President's office who (under pretext) expressed prejudiced
and intolerant views against the LGBTQ+ community, specifically targeting the drag performers.

As an organization that advocates for LGBTQ+ youth support, we strongly condemn this act of
bigotry and the silencing of artistic expression that promotes understanding, inclusivity, and
diversity. Canceling this event sends a troubling message to the university community and
beyond, perpetuating discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and undermining the
values of acceptance and equality that educational institutions should uphold.

We urge the administration of West Texas A&M University to reconsider their decision,
reinstate the event, and demonstrate their commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive
environment for all students, faculty, and staff, regardless of their gender identity or sexual
orientation. It is crucial for educational institutions to provide a platform for diverse voices and
experiences, fostering a culture of understanding and respect among their community members.

Moreover, we call upon the university to implement policies and practices that actively combat
discrimination and bigotry on campus and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes
providing training and resources for faculty, staff, and students, as well as organizing events and
initiatives that celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community.

Smile Big Texas stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, students and the performers
affected by this decision. We will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of all
individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. We encourage everyone to
join us in promoting a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society.
