It is expected that there will be a higher proportion of older people than that of young

people in many countries in the future. Do you think it is a positive or negative

development?
It is predicted that in the future, many countries would have to face with situation which the
percentage of elderly people is much higher than that of young people. From my point of view,
this trend is ultimately an adverse development for society in the long term.
In the first place, having a large proportion of older people can place a financial burden on the
state budget. The government will have to increase the expenditure of pensions or medical care
service for people who are vulnerable, which causes the authority to cut back and underfunding
for issues of immediate concerns. Many developing countries with limited budget such as Viet
Nam, India, for instance, due to allowances for the old folk, the government no longer has
enough money to develop the education or national defense industry.
In the second place, more and more elderly could reduce the quality of labor force. It is very
clearly that the aged can not have the same strength and agility as the young, which can lead to a
significant decrease in labor productivity. These factors accumulate gradually and then could
cause a serious drop in the production and revenue of the business. In contrast, having a young
workforce with advanced level skills in technology can make the production process becoming
easier, thereby enabling to efficient productivity.
To conclude, I am a firm believer that the expanding number of older people in comparison to
younger people is decidedly a negative development for the society and the country.
