Exercises axial forces and deformation

1. A mast is supported by a pen in C and a cable AB in construction steel. Diameter of the cable
is 5mm². Calculate how much the cable is elongated when the fore of 15kN is applied.

2. The beam AD is undeformable. When a weight W is applied, position B is lowered by 0.5mm.

The cables are stainless steel with an area of 1.2mm². Calculate the weight W.

3. In the graph you find the stress strain curve for polyester resin. AB (diameter 12mm) and CD
(diameter 40mm) are made in this material. Calculate the maximum force P that can be
supported without braking the supports. AC is considered undeformable. (druk =
compression; trek = tension)
4. The construction steel cable (area 10mm²) is without tension when θ=45°. Calculate the force
P to deform the construction so θ=44.9°.

5. A aluminium 2014 rod , diameter 30mm is charges as on drawing. Calculate the deformation.

6. This construction consists of 2 pieces of constructionsteel. AB has a area of 600mm² while BD

has an area of 1200mm².Calculate the vertical displacement of point A when all forces are
applied.

7. A bar of construction steel (area 60mm²) is fixed on the ceiling and is charged as in drawing.
Calculate the displacement of A. (size of couplings in D, C and B can be neglected)
8. This construction consists of 2 undeformable beams AB and CD. The pieces BE and CF are in
Titanium (Ti-6A1-4V) with a diameter of 6mm. When uncharged, both beams are perfectly
horizontal. Calculate the inclination of AB when the charge of 20kN is applied.

9. This construction is made of 3 steel bars (E=210GPa), 4m long, each with area of 500mm².
Calculate force P necessary to displace B 0.8mm. (42kN)

10. This construction consists of 3 bars in construction steel with area of section 400mm². When
a charge P of 8kN vertical is added to the 5kN horizontal, calculate the horizontal
displacement of support C (rolling support). (0.097mm)
11. A plastic rod has a length of 200mm and diameter of 15mm. E=2.7GPa and ˅=0.4. Calculate
the length and diameter when a charge of 300N is applied.

12. A cylindrical piece of aluminium 2014, diameter 12mm and length 40 mm is placed in a vice.
Calculate the new length and diameter when a force of 400N is applied.

13. If we take the setup from above and we put in a new piece of aluminium. We close the vice
so it just touches the aluminium. Now we close the vice with ½ turn on the handle (pitch of
vice is 0.4 cm), calculate the new diameter of the aluminium.
