Introductory Message

For the Facilitator

As facilitators, you need to guide and help the learners in answering the

module. Remind them that the support of the parents, guardian or siblings is

very important in attaining the success of the learners to accomplish this

quarterly module. They should prepare a study area for the learners to work

on this module. Remind the learners that a separate worksheet is provided for

the assessment. For pre-test, self-check exercises and post-test in this

module should be answered in a separate sheet of paper.

For the learner:

This module is self-instructional. You can read, analyze concepts and ideas

base on the topic for the specific quarter. There are self-checked exercises that

you need to answer here in our module. You may write your answer in a

separate sheet of paper. Objective for the lesson will be seen in the “What’s In”

for your guidance. “What’s new” gives you an idea of the new lesson, “What is

it” is the brief discussion of the lesson while What I have Learned is where we

process what you have learned in the lesson. Happy learning!

MODULE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10
Third Quarter
Week 5 - Day 1 and 2

MELCS

Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities for at least 60 minutes a day in and
out of school (PE10PF-IIIc-h-45)

WHAT’S IN
You have learned the concept of active recreation and how it can maintain and improve
your life. The true measure of your understanding of the concepts and principles of active
recreation, fitness and a healthy lifestyle is your capacity to apply it in your daily life. Here’s how
we can test what you have learned:
Arrange the jumbled letters to derive the correct terms based on the definitions given.

ABIEROC ERCXSEEI a style of physical movement designed to increase heart rate and improve
oxygenation throughout the body.
TIEM refers to how long you should engage in a specific physical activity

PYTE refers to the kind of exercise or physical activity you should engage in.
RECTIOAREN an activity that people engage in their free time that they enjoy and recognize as
having socially redeeming values and generates a general sense of well-being.

WHAT’S NEW
Recreational activities’ main objective is to revitalize the physical, mental, social and
emotional aspects of a person. In today’s world that is full of stress and pressures, we all need to
engage in Recreational activities to relieve our tensions and one of these ways is through
dancing.

Dance is a recreational activity that can develop our physical, mental, social and
emotional health. Dancing as part of our lifestyle can surely sustain our fitness. But it should be
coupled with proper eating habits and weight management for a person to live a healthy life.

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that
have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking which
was created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.

WHAT IS IT

STREET DANCE * refers to dance styles that have evolved outside of dance studios. It is
performed in streets, dance parties, parks, school yards, or in any available space.

4
HIP HOP * is a cultural movement best known for its impact on music in the form of
musical genre of the same name.

STREET AND HIP-HOP DANCE STYLES

B-BOYING or breaking, also called breakdancing, is a style of street

dance and the first hip-hop dance style that originated among Black
and Puerto Rican youths in New York City during the early 1970s.A
practitioner of this dance is called a b-boy, b-girl or breaker.

POPPING was popularized by Samuel Boogaloo Sam Solomon and

his crew the Electric Boogaloos. It is based on the technique of quickly
contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in a dancer’s body.
Popping forces parts of your body outwards, similar to an explosion
within parts of your body. It also contracts muscles, but it is followed
by relaxation that gives it the jerking appearance of popping.

LOCKING or campbellocking, was created by Don Campbellock

Campbell in 1969 in Los Angeles, California. It was popularized by
his crew, The Lockers. Locking can be identified by its distinctive
stops. It is usually performed by stopping the fast movements that
you are doing, locking your body into a position, holding it, and then
continuing at the same speed as before. The lock is the primary move
used in locking. It is similar to a freeze or a sudden pause.

KRUMPING is a form of dancing that originated in the African –

American community of South-Central Los Angeles, California and is
relatively new form of the “Urban” Black dance movement. It is free,
expressive and highly energetic. Most people paint their faces in
different designs. Krumping is a dance style to release anger.

TUTTING is a creative way of making geometric

shapes forming right angle using your body parts. The
style was originally practiced by young funk dancers.
It is derived from the positions people were drawn in
during the days of the Ancient Egyptians. Tutting is
still a greatly respected move and King Tut aka Mark
Benson is widely acclaimed for pioneering the style.

5
SHUFFLING the Melbourne Shuffle (also known as Rocking or
simply the Shuffle) is a rave and club dance that originated in the
late 1980s in the underground rave music scene in Melbourne,
Australia. The basic movement of the dance are a fast heel and
toe action with the style suitable for various types of electronic
music. Some variants incorporate arm movements. People who
dance the shuffle are often referred to as rockers, due in part to
the popularity of shuffling to rock music in the early 1990s.

WAACKING is an African – American form of street dance

originating from the 1970s disco era of the underground club
scenes in Los Angeles and New York City. Waacking consists
of stylized posing and fast synchronized arm movements to the
beat of the music. Today, waacking is a popular element of
hiphop dance.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Dance is a recreational activity that can develop our physical, mental, social and
emotional health. Dancing as part of our lifestyle can surely sustain our fitness. But it should be
coupled with proper eating habits and weight management for a person to live a healthy life.

Third Quarter
Week 5 Day 3-4
MELCS:

Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities for at least 60 minutes a day in

and out of school (PE10PF-IIIc-h-45)

WHAT’S IN
Many elements of breakdancing can be seen in other antecedent cultures prior to the
1970s. B-boy pioneers Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon and Kenneth “Ken Swift” Gabbert, both of
Rock Steady Crew, cite James Brown and Kung FU films as influences. Many of the acrobatic
moves such as the flare, show clear connections to gymnastics.
There are four primary elements that form b-boying. To discover these elements,
arrange the following jumbled letters.

1.OCKPORT – footwork – oriented steps performed while standing up.

2.WONDKORC – footwork performed with both hands and feet on the floor.
3.EERFZSE – stylish poses done on your hands.
4.REWOP SEVOM – comprise full body spins and rotations that give the illusion of defying
gravity.

WHAT’S NEW:

Dancers throughout New York City in all boroughs continued to invent new movements and
gestures to create a street dance. Many gang members began to perform this dance and it
became common to see gang members hanging out in corners, dancing against each other.
There are four primary elements that form b-boying. These includes top rock, down rock, power
moves and freezes.
1.TOPROCK – refers to any string of steps performed from a
standing position. It is usually the first and foremost opening
display of style though dancers often transition from other aspects
of b-boying to toprock and back. Toprock has a variety of steps
which can each be varied according to the dancer’s expression.
(i.e. aggressive, calm, excited). A great deal of freedom is allowed
in the definition of toprock : as long as the dancer maintains
cleanliness, form, and the b-boy attitude, theoretically anything can
be toprock. Toprock can draw upon many other dance styles such
as popping, locking, tap dance, Lindy hop or house dance.
Transitions from toprock to downrock and power moves are called
“drops”. https://bit.ly/2JT9jD6

2.DOWNROCK – (also known as “footwork” or floor work). Is used

yo describe any movement on the floor with the hands supporting
the dancers as uch as the feet. Downrock includes moves such as
the foundational 6-steps, and each variants such as the 3-
steps. The most basic of downrock is done intirely on feet and

7
hands but more complex variations can involve the knees when threading limbs
through each other. https://bit.ly/2IQnatg

3. POWER MOVES – are acrobatic moves that require

momentum, speed, endurance, strength and control to
execute. The breaker is generally supported by his upper body
while the rest of his body creates circular momentum. Some
examples are the windmill, swipe, back spin, and head spin.
Some power moves are borrowed from gymnastics and martial
arts. An example of a power move taken from gymnastics is the
Thomas Flair which is shortened and spelled flare in b-boying.

4.FREEZES – are stylish poses that require the breaker to

suspend himself or herself off the ground using upper body
strength in poses such as the pike. They are used ro emphasize
strong beats in the music and often signal the end of the set.
Freezes can be linked into chains or “stacks” where breakers go
from freeze to freeze to freeze in order to hit the beats of the
music which displays musicality and physical
strength. https://bit.ly/34ak3Ua

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

1. Top Rock – footwork – oriented steps performed while standing up.

2. Down Rock – footwork performed with both hands and feet on the floor.
3. Freeze – stylish poses done on your hands.
4. Power Moves – comprise full body spins and rotations that give the illusion of
defying gravity.

Third Quarter
Week 6 Day 1-2

WHAT’S IN: Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities for at least 60 minutes a day in
and out of school (PE10PF-IIIc-h-45)

WHAT’S NEW:

No one would ever understand the importance of recreation until you experience the benefits.
It is fun, embodied in the form of fitness activities to refresh one’s body and mind. It is only through
your personal experience that you can influence others to participate and commit to improving
their own health and fitness practices. Let us try if you are committed in improving your own health
and practices by answering Yes or No on the following statement:

1. Did you eat a balanced diet every day?

2. Did you enjoy participating in recreational activities?

3. Did you play different sports regularly?

4. Did you engaged yourself in moderate to vigorous activities regularly?

WHAT IS IT:

Regular activity is no doubt beneficial to everyone. No one is too old to enjoy the benefits
of regular physical activity. Strengthening and flexibility exercises are intended to improve
bone and muscle strength and improve resilience of our connective tissue. Performing it 2-3
times per week may be enough to provide you with its maximum benefits. It is important to
know that for beginners, the amount of cumulative activity time is more important than the
specific type and manner of activity.

The Filipino Pyramid Activity Guide is intended to be a guide that should help everyone select
activity that best fits his lifestyle and health needs. Just 30 minutes of the different activities the
course of a day is healthy and rewarding. The four levels are arranged in the pyramid according
to their FITT principle recommendations. Activities that should be performed most frequently are
found at the base of the pyramid, and those that should be performed less frequently are found
at the top of the pyramid.

The base of the pyramid includes activities that are easy, convenient and accessible to
everyone. These activities, part of our daily routines, when performed habitually or daily for a
minimum of 30 minutes at a time will provide metabolic efficiency by increasing total energy
expenditure. So if you are diabetic or obese, with poor sugar control and have never engaged in
any form of exercise before, activities like walking, climbing the stairs, and doing household
chores may be a good start. The top of the pyramid refers to activities that are frequently
performed by most children and adults who are overweight. These activities are believed to be
responsible for the progressive rose in obesity and diabetes in the country.

Aside from the Filipino Pyramid Activity Guide, here is another preference that would help you in
choosing activity for healthy needs and lifestyle. The Philippine Physical Activity Guide is a

10
diagram that shows the different kinds of physical activities that you can do each day in one week.
It also indicates how often and h long you can do each activity in a week.

Try to guess the word

C Y N E Q U R E F ____________________ is an important concept in the Philippine Activity

Pyramid which refers to the number of times that you engage in physical activities within a period
of one week.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

One of the activity that you can engaged in 4-5 times a week based on Philippine Physical Activity
Pyramid is dancing. Dancing as a recreational activity can be a way to stay fit for people of all
ages, shapes, and sizes. It has a wide range of physical and mental benefits such as:

1. Improved condition of your heart and lungs.

2. Increased muscular strength, endurance, and motor fitness
3. Increased aerobic fitness
4. Improved muscle tone and strength
5. Weight management
6. Stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis
7. Better coordination, agility, and flexibility
8. Improved balanced and spatial awareness
9. Increased physical confidence
10. Improved mental functions
11. Improved general and psychological well-being
12. Greater self-confidence and self-esteem
13. Better Social skills.
14. Safety Precaution in Dancing are as follows:
⮚ Drink plenty of water before ,during and after dancing
⮚ Wear layers of clothing that you can take off as your body warms up.
⮚ Wear professionally fitted shoes appropriate to your style of dance. Proper dance shoes
distribute load, absorb impact, and support your foot.

MODULE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10
Third Quarter
Week 6 Day 3-4

WHAT’S IN : Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities for at least 60 minutes a day
in and out of school (PE10PF-IIIc-h-4

WHAT’S NEW

Just as the nutrition guidelines are outlined in the Food Guide Pyramid , the guidelines for
physical activity are diagrammed in the Physical Activity Pyramid . This pyramid was designed
to help people live an active lifestyle, reap the fitness and performance benefits of routine
exercise, reduce the health risks associated with inactivity, and reduce the injury risks
associated with too much activity.

WHAT IS IT The physical activity pyramid (Leon & Norstrom 1995) emphasize that a complete
exercise program should encourage individuals to be as active as they can during their daily life,
in addition to performing structured physical activity.

Physical Activity Pyramid

● A visual representation demonstrating how to increase physical activity until it becomes a

part of daily routine..
● Visual representation with daily recommended activity at the base and proceeding to less
beneficial activity at the peak.

It is important to balance what you eat with your physical activity, according to the 2005 Dietary
Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid, USDA’s latest food guide pyramid. This is the first
time that USDA Food Guidance makes recommendations for physical activity.

Nutrition and physical activity work together for your better health. The person climbing the
steps on the side of MyPyramid represents YOU being active every day.

12
Importance of Physical Activity

⮚ Being physically active can help you live a longer, healthier, happier life. Adding physical
activity to your day can help you reach and maintain a healthy weight by burning calories
⮚ lower your risk for chronic disease, such as coronary heart disease**, stroke, type 2
diabetes, osteoporosis and colon cancer
⮚ help control blood pressure
⮚ lower your risk for a heart attack
⮚ help you feel good about yourself
reduce stress, anxiety and depression
⮚ improve your fitness level
⮚ increase muscle strength
⮚ reduce body fat help build and maintain bones and joints
⮚ improve flexibility and posture
⮚ help prevent arthritis or relieve the pain from it
⮚ reduce the risk of falling among older adults

*Research show that combining a reduced-calorie diet with exercise is the most effective way to
lose weight.

Regular exercise can raise levels of HDL, the good blood cholesterol. It also lowers levels of
triglycerides, another fat in the blood (different from cholesterol) that increases heart disease risk.
Therefore, if you have high HDL and lower triglyceride levels, then you are less likely to develop
heart disease.

What is Physical Activity?

Physical activity means moving your body to use energy. Good examples are: walking, dancing,
playing soccer, briskly pushing a baby stroller, and even gardening. It does not have to be
strenuous.

If a physical activity does not increase your heart rate, it is not intense enough to count towards
the 30 or more minutes a day that you should get. Activities that do not increase your heart rate
include walking at a casual pace, grocery shopping, and doing light household chores.

Before Beginning an Exercise Program: Most adults do not need a doctor’s checkup before
exercising at a moderate level. Exceptions include people with heart disease, high blood pressure,
diabetes, asthma, osteoporosis and obesity. A high fat diet, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle
are other risk factors. Men over 40 and women over 50 should see their doctor or health care
provider before starting a vigorous physical activity program. Get advice on how often and how
long to exercise.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Ways to Get Moving

The more you enjoy exercise, the more likely you are to stick to it. Many activities that you enjoy
can be worked into your daily routine so that you don’t have to go to the gym or an aerobics class.

13
Always be prepared. Keep a pair of walking or running shoes and some comfortable clothes in
the car and at the office.

Walk! Do it in your neighborhood, find a local trail, or go to the mall and walk around before you
shop. Walk during your lunch break or to do your errands. Take the stairs instead of the elevator
or escalator. Park in the farthest parking spot and walk to the office or store.

Make exercise a social event. Walk with your spouse, a family member, neighbor or friend to
make it more fun. Take group dancing lessons.

Incorporate exercise into your work day. Do simple stretching and calisthenics exercises at your
desk. Jumping rope is a cheap exercise that can be done anywhere, even in a hotel room on a
business trip.

Participate in a sport such as tennis, softball, basketball or touch football. Play golf, but push or
carry your golf bag rather than ride in a golf cart. Jog or join an exercise class. Keep your activities
interesting by trying something different on alternate days.

Do household chores for exercise. Vacuuming, mopping, and dusting can be quite a workout.
Mow the lawn with a push mower, garden, rake leaves, or wash and wax your car.

Make exercise a family activity. Get outdoors and hike, ride bikes, skate, swim, go canoeing,
sailing, snorkeling or horseback riding together.

Discusses the significance of global health initiatives (H10HC-IIIa-1)

WHAT’S IN
Global Health- diverse health issues, concerns and trends which call for all nations to
address and act on to promote and protect health of individuals and groups across boundaries.

WHAT’S NEW

Global Health Initiatives (GHIs)- are humanitarian initiatives that raises and disburse
additional funds for infectious diseases- such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria- for
immunization and for strengthening health systems in developing countries. GHIs classify a type
of global initiative, which is defined as an organized effort integrating the involvement of
organizations, individuals and stakeholders around the world to address a global issue (i.e.:
climate change, human rights, etc.)

WHAT IS IT

Here are the 5 existing Global Health Initiatives:

1.Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)- The United Nations Millennium Development

Goals are eight goals that all 191 UN member states have agreed to try to achieve by the year
2015. The United Nations Millennium Declaration, signed in September 2000 commits world
leaders to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and
discrimination against women. The MDGs are derived from this Declaration, and

2.All have specific targets and indicators.

The Eight Millennium Development Goals are:

15
1. to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger;
2. to achieve universal primary education;
3. to promote gender equality and empower women;
4. to reduce child mortality;
5. to improve maternal health;
6. to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases;
7. to ensure environmental sustainability; and
8. to develop a global partnership for development.

3.WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC)- is the prime

international treaty negotiated under WHO. The WHO FCTC came into existence in reaction to
the global epidemic of tobacco use and abuse. It reaffirms the right of every individual across the
world to the highest standard of health promoting public health and providing new legal means
for global health cooperation.

4.Global Mental Health Action Plan- Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020-
is the result of extensive research and consultations by stakeholder, member-nations, academic
and non-government centers across the globe. The mental health action plan should be impartial,
life-based and preventive in nature.

5.Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol- recognize the close ties
between the harmful use of alcohol and the socio-economic development of a nation. Likewise,
this strategy builds and supports other global health initiatives like the global strategy for the
prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

6.Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations- is a global strategy which aims to
strengthen children’s immunization programs and introduce new generation of licensed vaccines
into use developing countries across the globe.

their AmBisyon for a “matatag, maginhawa at panatag na buhay.” The PDP will therefore aim
to lay down a solid foundation for more inclusive growth, a high-trust and resilient society,
and a globally competitive knowledge economy. The strategies fall under the three major
pillars of “Malasakit,” “Pagbabago,” and “Patuloy na Pag-unlad”.

➢ Enhancing the social fabric (Malasakit)

The aim is to regain the peoples’ trust in public institutions and cultivate trust in fellow
Filipinos.

➢ Inequality-reducing transformation (Pagbabago)

For each economic sector, this means more opportunities for growth of output and
income; lagging sub-sectors and economic groups like small farmers and fisher folk, and
MSMEs.

➢ Increasing potential growth

Potential growth can be further enhanced by reaching for and harvesting the
demographic dividend also the foundations for a knowledge economy is needed.

➢ Enabling and supportive economic environment

More inclusive growth will be achieved with an enabling and supportive economic
environment.

➢ Foundations for sustainable development.

All these will be underpinned by ensuring national security against internal and
external threats. At the same time, territorial integrity and sovereignty will be upheld
and protected.

➢ Migration and development.

Recommends ways of adopting global health initiatives to local or national context
(H10HC-IIId-e-4).

WHAT’S IN
The terms ‘dressing’ and ‘bandage’ are often used synonymously. In fact, the term ‘dressing’
refers more correctly to the primary layer in contact with the wound. A bandage is a piece of
material used either to covering wounds, to keep dressings in place, to applying pressure
controlling bleeding, to support a medical device such as a splint, or on its own to provide
support to the body. It can also be used to restrict a part of the body.

WHAT’S NEW

Global health initiatives were established to tackle increasing global health threats,
reduce disparities within communities and between nations and contribute to a world where
people live healthier, safer and longer lives.

WHAT IS IT

Roll Back Malaria’s work together to help break the cycle of malaria transmission,
cure patients and support development. They are:

1. Evidence-based decisions using surveillance, appropriate response and building community

awareness

vaccines

Immunization Strategies in the Philippines

➢ Global Routine Immunization Strategies and Practices

➢ Reaching Every District
➢ Reducing Missed Opportunities for Vaccination
➢ Vaccination in the second year of life
➢ Addressing vaccine hesitancy
➢ Catch-up Vaccination
➢ Safety and acceptability of multiple injections
➢ School-based immunization
➢ School vaccination checks
➢ Vaccination in humanitarian emergencies
➢ Engagement of the private sector in immunization service deliver
➢ Vaccination of health workers

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

1. Roll Back Malaria is an initiative intended to halve the suffering caused by this disease by
2010. The initiative is being developed as a social movement. Action is directed by national
authorities backed by a global partnership which consists of development agencies, banks,
private sector groups and researchers.

2. In 2016, the Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act 10767 or the

Comprehensive TB Elimination Plan Act. This national policy provides a framework to
enhance TB elimination by strengthening the healthcare sector, improving public-private
partnership and making TB notification mandatory.

28
3. The development and availability of many new vaccines targeting a variety of age groups, the
emergence of new technologies, the increased public focus on vaccine safety issues, the
enhanced procedures for regulation and approval of vaccines, the need to expand the
immunization schedule with consideration of all age groups and specific at-risk populations, are
all demanding increased attention.

MELCS

Recommends ways of adopting global health initiatives to local or national

context. (H10HC-IIId-e-4)

WHAT’S IN
Global Health Initiatives(GHIs) are humanitarian initiatives that raise and disburse
additional funds for infectious diseases– such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria– for
immunization and for strengthening health systems in developing countries.

WHAT’S NEW

Global health is the health of populations in the global context; it has been defined as
"the area of study, research and practice that places a priority on improving health and
achieving equity in health for all people worldwide".
Not only does better population health reduce losses due to morbidity and mortality, but
the modification of microeconomic behaviours related to anticipation of longer life expectancy
fuels increased savings and investment, as well as the transmission of improved human capital
from generation to the next.

WHAT IS IT

Most significant challenges to continued progress of tobacco control in the Philippines:

1. RAISE TAXES AND PRICES OF TOBACCO

Cigarettes are highly affordable in the Philippines, largely due to low taxes and a complex
tax structure. Little of the revenue from these taxes has been used for health purposes, and health
consequences of the existing tobacco tax system appear not to be fully appreciated by policy
makers.

2.PROTECT PEOPLE FROM TOBACCO SMOKE

Effective local government eff orts for creating smoke-free environments exist and non-
governmental organizations are making important contributions. However, there is a lack of
financial and technical support necessary for the sustained countrywide reach required to deliver
potentially large health benefits.

3. OFFER HELP TO QUIT TOBACCO USE

There is a need for a coordinated national cessation infrastructure/system; in addition, the
lack of cessation providers hampers the implementation of the national cessation policy.

30
4. WARN PEOPLE ABOUT THE DANGERS OF TOBACCO
Mass media activities are irregular and use weak, ineffective content. Graphic health
information on all tobacco packages (introduced by DOH AO 2010-0013) can be implemented
even though court cases on this issue are pending.

5. SUSTAIN MONITORING AND EVALUATION EFFORTS

The Philippines has recent, representative, and periodic tobacco surveillance data for both
adults and youth. However, sustainability is a challenge. Ensure sustainability of existing
surveillance efforts by integrating a core set of GATS questions and methods into ongoing
surveys.

6. ENFORCE BANS ON TOBACCO ADVERTISING, PROMOTION, AND

SPONSORSHIP
The enforcement of the current restrictions on the tobacco advertising, promotion, and
sponsorship is weak, mainly due to poor clarification of agencies, rules and regulations, and lack
of strong enforcement mechanism. Strengthen the enforcement mechanism of the current TAPS’
restrictions, through coordinated action at local jurisdictions, under the DOH leadership and
coordination.

Non – communicable diseases strategy on national level:

*Raise priority accorded to NCDs through international cooperation and advocacy.

*Strengthen national capacity, governance, multisectoral action, and partnerships.
*Reduce the major modifiable risk factors, such as tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol,
unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity
*Develop and implement effective legal frameworks.
*Orient health systems through people-centered health care and universal health
coverage.
*Promote high-quality research and development
*Monitor trends, determinants and progress to achieve global, regional and national
targets through evidence-base interventions.

Mental Health Program in the Philippines

*To promote participatory governance and leadership in mental health
*To strengthen coverage of mental health services through multi-sectoral partnership to
provide high quality service aiming at best patient experience in a responsive service
delivery network
*To harness capacities of LGUs and organized groups to
implement promotive and preventive interventions on mental health
*To leverage quality data and research evidence for mental health
*To set standards for compliance in different aspects of services

Program Components

1. Wellness of Daily Living

*All health/ social/ poverty reduction/ safety and security programs and the like are
protective factors in general for the entire population

31
*Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle, Prevention and Control of Diseases, Family wellness
programs, etc.
*School and workplace health and wellness programs

2. Extreme Life Experience

*Provision of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) during personal and
community wide disasters

3. Mental Disorder

4. Neurologic Disorders

5. Substance Abuse and other Forms of Addiction

*Provision of services for mental, neurologic and substance use disorders at the primary
level from assessment, treatment and management to referral; and provision of
psychotropic drugs which are provided for free.
*Enhancement of mental health facilities under HFEP

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

1. Smoking is associated with lung disease, cancers, and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, a
growing body of evidence suggests that these substances might be especially dangerous when
they are used together; when combined, alcohol and tobacco
dramatically increase the risk of certain cancers.

2. Referred to as a "lifestyle" disease, because the majority of these diseases are preventable
illnesses, the most common causes for non-communicable diseases (NCD) include tobacco use
(smoking), alcohol abuse, poor diets (high consumption of sugar, salt, saturated fats, and trans
fatty acids) and physical inactivity.

3. Mental illness, psychological disorders and emotional dysfunctions are significantly

widespread throughout the Philippines, due to the large poverty population and the numerous
out-of-school or out-of-work youths.
