MATE 202 Materials Science II

Fall 2018 - September 04 to December 07

Course Description:
*3.8 (fi 8) (either term or Spring/Summer, 3-0-3/2) An introduction to the science of materials relating their
mechanical, thermal, electronic, and chemical properties to atomic, molecular, and crystal structure.
Ceramic and metallic crystals, glasses, polymers, and composite materials. Multi-phase materials, phase
transformations, and strengthening processes. Laboratories include mechanical properties of materials,
microstructure, heat treatment of steel, and hands on design experiments.

Prerequisites: CHEM 105 or consent of Department.

Course Objectives & General Content:


At the conclusion of the course, the student shall be able to demonstrate knowledge in tasks dealing with:
* Declarative knowledge – the what: Proper use of relevant vocabulary; definitions; magnitudes of constants
* Procedural knowledge – the how: Correct methods of solving problems
* Conditional knowledge – the when: Application of theory and problem solving methods to different
situations
* Reflective learning – the why: Ability to explain how theoretical concepts apply to observations and
behavior

Assessment will be through written communication, calculations, and application of concepts to common
and new situations.

Knowledge is defined as having the ability to perform the above tasks to solve relevant problems that agree
with expert opinion (i.e., a level of competence). The use of appropriate language and terminology is also
necessary.

The Faculty recommended grade point average for a 200 level course is 2.8. Instructors have the leeway to
deviate from this average and can assign grades based on their own scheme. All grades are approved by
the department chair (or delegate). The office of the Dean has final oversight on all grades.

Term Work
All term work solutions will be posted no later than the last day of classes. All term work will be returned to
students by the final day of classes, with the exception of major term work due in the last week of classes.
The latter will be returned by the day of the final examination or the last day of the examination period if
there is no final examination in the course as per university policy; instructors will make accommodations to
return these term work. It is the responsibility of the student to pick up all their term work at the specified
time and place. Any unreturned term work, shall be retained and then shredded six months after the
deadline for reappraisal and grade appeals. Final examinations will be kept for one year as required by
university guidelines and the Government of Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Calculator Policy
Only approved non-programmable calculators are permitted in examinations. Any calculator taken into an
examination must have a sticker identifying it as an acceptable non-programmable calculator (gold sticker).
Students can purchase calculators at the University Bookstore with the stickers already affixed. Calculators
purchased elsewhere can be brought to the Dean's Office where the appropriate sticker will be affixed to the
calculator.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Recall terminologies and magnitudes of constants, fundamental to the field of Materials Science, and
demonstrate their knowledge through proper usage.

2. Describe different types of bonding, classify materials, and relate the mechanical thermal, electronic
and chemical properties of materials to their atomic, molecular, and crystal structures.

3. Relate materials' elastic-plastic deformation to applied stress, understand the behavior of common
defects, and steps to strengthen materials by controlling defects,

4. Describe various processing of metals, alloys, and choose pertinent processes for desired
characteristics, using the concepts of diffusion, microstructure, and phase transformation.

5. Predict microstructure and properties of materials based on phase diagrams/phase transformations,


and design processing of materials, including heat treatment processes, using the knowledge of TTT
and CCT curves.

6. Inspect, analyze, and diagnose corrosion-related problems, and resolve them through recommending
proactive and preventive measures.

7. Describe the basics of polymers and ceramics, and identify the structure-property relation of polymeric
and ceramic products in engineering.

8. Be familiar with laboratory methods for measuring mechanical properties, microstructure, heat
treatment of steels, and corrosion.

Labs: Be sure to obtain your lab manual and kit from the U of A Bookstore. Come to lab prepared with your
safety equipment and pre-labs completed.

Lab safety is serious and will not be compromised for any reason. The student must provide and wear
safety glasses, a lab coat, closed-toe shoes (no sandals), and long pants at all times in the lab. If you
attempt to attend the lab without wearing all the personal protective equipment listed above you will be
removed from the lab immediately and you will not receive credit for the lab (safety violations are
considered as non-academic class disruptions under Section 30.4.3(1) of the Student Code and minor
sanctions apply). Moreover you will not have an opportunity for a make-up session. If you do not leave
the TA will call campus protective services and you will be removed and charges may be laid. In
industry people who commit, or intend to commit safety violations are often fired on the spot!
In addition to safety attire, students will not be allowed to attend labs until they have completed the
WHMIS training. If you do not have WHMIS training from ENGG 100 or 101, or another course,
please complete the WHMIS online quiz found on e-Class web site. A grade of >75% is required to
pass the quiz, and you will have two attempts to be completed by 5pm, Sept. 14, 2018; there will be
no make-up sessions for students failing to have their WHMIS quiz completed prior to Sept. 14, 2018,
and a grade of zero will be assessed for the ENTIRE LAB MARK. Completing the WHMIS quiz
through the e-Class site will automatically generate a report for us to track with the date of completion.
If you already have already completed WHMIS training as part of another course (e.g., ENGG
100 or 101, or with a company) you will not need to do the quiz again. If you have WHMIS from another
institution it is your responsibility to insure such information is recorded by the head TA on or prior to
Sept. 14, 2018 (present an official certificate such as a wallet card or online printout along with student
ID card).

Lab attendance, for the full duration, is mandatory, and you must attend the section in which you are
registered. Unless permission has been granted in advance you will receive a grade of zero if you attend
an incorrect lab section.

Each lab session will consist of multiple experiments so be sure to do the pre-lab portion of each
experiment on a separate piece of engineering paper to hand in at the beginning of each lab session!
Labs must be completed and handed in at the end of each lab period so bring your lab manual to the lab.
All morning labs start at 8:00 AM and all afternoon labs begin at 2:00 PM.

Please be patient with current building renovations, as some temporary lab locations do not allow us to
provide the usual space in which we normally run the labs.

Lab sessions 1 and 4 have a hands-on lab component built in to allow you to explore concepts with your
“What’s in the Box?” Demo Kit. These sessions are designed to get you to think about the mechanisms in

the other labs, and to integrate your knowledge with some more challenging open ended design style
questions.

IMPORTANT: Do not do anything with your Demo Kit items unless being supervised by a TA in lab.

Grading: The final grade will be calculated based on the students raw score weighted according to the following
formula, and a letter grade assigned at the end of the course. Scaling may or may not be applicable
depending on the class performance. A clear pass may or may not be set at the 50% mark. In general, a
failing grade will be assigned when both exam scores are below a clear pass. A clear pass is not always
50%.

For grades falling on borderlines, consideration will be given to attendance, participation, and
performance trends.

Attendance: Attendance to class is highly encouraged. Anything presented in class will be considered testable material
(in addition to text readings, handouts, etc.). Participation will help you learn the material, and questions
are encouraged. Punctuality is expected, and tardiness will not be tolerated.

Recording is permitted only with the prior written consent of the professor or if recording is part of an
approved accommodation plan. Please contact the instructor.

Absences: If for any reason you are unable to be present for an exam or hand in a written assignment on time, you
need to contact your instructor.

If the absence can be predicted in advance, you are expected to notify your instructor in advance (24
hours minimum, but preferably as soon as you know). Until you are excused of your absence a grade of
zero will be assigned for that assignment or exam. If your instructor is unavailable, you must try to
contact the TA. Do not rely on e-mail as a confirmation that your message has gotten through. Please
take the effort to confirm your message is received. There are no deferrals for midterm exams in
Engineering. Any missed midterm exams will likely result in a change in the weight of the final exam
(from 50% to 75%). For legitimate absences from final exams, students will need to apply to the Dean’s
office for an exam deferral. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a failing grade for the exam.
Excusable absences can be found in the University Calendar. Deferred final exams will be written within
the time frame in agreement with the CME Department and University policy.

Homework: While homework only counts for 10% of your course grade, the importance of doing the homework
cannot be overemphasized, as it will help you learn the material. Homework assignment due dates are
listed below. Examine the schedule and inform your instructor of any known conflicts as soon as possible
before the due dates.

Homework assignments will posted on e-Class and are due promptly by 5:00pm on the specified due date
in the drop boxes located on the DICE building (by the pedway between DICE and CME; the drop boxes
are labeled according to lecture section of the first person on the assignment). THERE IS NO SUCH
THING AS LATE HOMEWORK! Always use SI units and an appropriate number of significant
figures in your answer. Homework solutions will be posted on the e-Class website.

Problem sets will be done in groups (of 3 or 4 people only). Your problem set group will be permanent
for the semester. If you are having trouble finding a group please contact your instructor ASAP. Your
homework group can be only comprised of students registered in your own lecture section.

The problem sets are designed to require group work. Engineers work in groups, so consider this
professional training. ONE assignment will be handed in for each group and all group members will
receive the same grade. Only hand in original work. Every student should attempt each problem, and
should teach the other group members full solutions if the divide and conquer technique is used.
Independent work is expected (see Code of Student Behavior). It is up to all group members to review the
graded assignment, and ensure there are no grading errors. Any changes to homework grades will be
allowed up until the due date of the following assignment.

All assignments are to be handed in on engineering paper (U of A paper is okay, company branded paper
is not – this is an ethical matter1), with the format specified below. Staple the questions in order as they
appear on the assignment sheet (e.g., Q1, Q2, Q3 …). Marks will be deducted if you do not adhere to
the format. If you hand in a printout of a graph or chart, please include the same information as you
would if the graph were on engineering paper. See notes about graphing below.

There is great value in knowing how to read and make a graph. We know you already learned how to construct
a graph many years ago, but here is what we expect, and what we will grade for during this course.
Quick guidelines on reading and making graphs:
1. Use a ruler or computer generate a graph
2. You MUST label the axes with the variable names and or symbols, and the origin (where appropriate)
3. Include units of variables on the axes labels in parentheses
4. Use a legend or clearly identify lines (especially when multiple lines are present)
5. Points on a line should be indicated by dashed lines to the corresponding axes where the values of the
variables can be identified with a tick
6. A title or caption aids the viewer, but is not always necessary
7. Color is helpful when multiple lines or regions on a line are required

• The point shown by the dashed lines is where there is a transition from elastic (linear) to plastic
deformation, and this transition occurs at a value of strain identified as the proportional limit, and a
value of stress identified as the yield stress (𝜎ys).
• Notice that labels for “𝜎ys” and “proportional limit” are on the axes, and not floating in space (this is
because of their units being dictated by the axis on which they are defined).
• The Young’s Modulus of Elasticity, E, is shown directly on the linear portion of the curve because it
relates to the identified equation which is the slope of the line, as marked by the triangle.

Exams: One midterm exam (90 minutes) is scheduled. The midterm will include all material in Units 1- 4
inclusive, and Lab 1.

The final exam is comprehensive (all material covered in the course, including the labs; heavier
emphasis on post-midterm material).

All exams will be cumulative, and closed book. You are allowed a university approved non-
programmable calculator and writing utensils. No other items will be allowed on your desk – no drinks,
food, papers, phones, etc.

Data and equations absolutely necessary to solve problems will be provided as needed, but be
forewarned…more data than you need may also be incorporated.

Exams will be based on the homework and the labs, but will not be the same problems to be
regurgitated. Integration and application of knowledge will be tested. There will be theory and
worked problems.

Referencing and Citing:


Plagiarism is a serious and punishable offense, both in the classroom setting and in real life. Any work
submitted for credit or to a publication house must be the student’s own work. This includes any material
found on-line, or in books, which should be referenced properly. Verbatim copying is not permitted.

Civility The classroom is a community for learning. Please respect each other and do not speak while others are
speaking. You will find that you can learn a great deal from your peers, so pay close attention and pay
respect when they are asking questions. There will be no attacks of a personal nature or statements
denigrating another on the basis of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, or other such
irrelevant factors. This will help to create an interactive class, and participation will enhance your
learning experience!

Thoughts on the course:


You know a lot about materials already. As engineers you will need to know a lot more! More importantly, the
type of knowledge you need to know about materials is not something you have heard much about – hence you
have a knowledge gap. Knowledge gaps are not “bad”, otherwise why would you be in school? Mat E 202 will
help you gain much more fundamental knowledge about engineering materials that will aid you in your career,
and enable you to do great things. For many of you, you will need more materials knowledge (regardless of
your discipline), and there are Mat E technical electives and ample professional development courses out there
which can allow you to further increase your knowledge.

CODE OF STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

EXTRACTS FROM THE CODE OF STUDENT BEHAVIOR -- TO BE REVIEWED WITH EACH CLASS AS
EARLY AS POSSIBLE EACH TERM .

The Code of Student Behavior (Section 30A, the section relating to Individual Students) defines Plagiarism and Cheating
as follows:
1. Plagiarism
No student shall submit the words, ideas, images or data of another person as the student's own in any academic writing,
essay, thesis, research project or assignment in a course or program of study.

2. Cheating
No-student shall:
a. in-the course of an examination, obtain or attempt to obtain information from another student or other unauthorized
source or give or attempt to give information to another student, or knowingly possess, use or attempt to use any
unauthorized material;
b. represent or attempt to represent oneself as another or have-or attempt to have oneself represented by another in the
taking of an examination, preparation of a paper or other similar activity;
c. submit in any course or program of study, without the written approval of the course instructor, all or a substantial
portion of any academic writing, essay, thesis, research report, project or assignment for which credit has previously been
obtained by the student or which has been or is being submitted by the student in another course or program of study in
the University or elsewhere:
d. submit in any course or program of study any academic writing, essay, thesis, research report, project or assignment
containing a statement of fact known by the student to be false or a reference to a source which reference or source has
been fabricated.

The Code of Student Behavior provides for the following penalties for plagiarism, cheating, and other academic offences:
Section 30A.5.1.b
i. Expulsion,
ii. Suspension,
iii. Mark reduction on the assignment or examination,
iv. A grade of F in a credit/no credit course and 1F for a graded course,
v. Conduct probation,
vi. Written reprimand,
vii. Suspend any degree already awarded,
viii. Rescind any degree already awarded.
Section 30A.8.2 sets out the procedures to be followed by an instructor or supervisor in the event of an alleged academic
offence. The following is excerpted from the full listing of procedures:
c. The instructor must discuss the alleged offence with the student. In the event that the alleged offender refuses to meet
with the instructor to discuss the matter the instructor shall proceed as outlined below (Section 30A.8.2.d).
d. Where the instructor has reason to believe that an offence has been committed, the instructor shall report the incident to
the Dean and shall file with the Dean a statement in writing setting out:
i. a brief summary of the conduct alleged to constitute the offence, and
ii. a statement that the instructor has complied with Section 30A.8.2.c, and
iii. a brief statement of any action taken by the instructor as a result of the incident.
e. Where the instructor feels a discipline penalty should be considered the instructor may make that recommendation to
the Dean, and may refer to one or more of the penalties listed in Section 30A.5.1.b.

Section 30A.9. 1 outlines the steps a student follows should he or she decide to appeal the imposition of a penalty. The

a. A student may appeal the decision of the Discipline Officer or the Dean by submitting a notice of appeal in writing to
the Appeals Coordinator. Such notice must be received by the Coordinator no later than fifteen (15) calendar days after
notification of the written decision of the Discipline Officer.

A Bachelor of Science in Engineering is a professional degree. As such, it is regulated and has very high ethical
and professional standards, just as law and medicine. As an engineering student you are a student member of APEGGA
and you are expected to behave in a professional manner. According to this tradition, cheating, plagiarism, and
misconduct will not be tolerated in MAT E 202.
