B. CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION

B.1 INTRODUCTION

This guide outlines the construction procedures and specifications required to install
BEBO System arch structures. It also covers the installation of precast spandrel walls
where used. It should be read in connection with the project design drawings.
Prior to commencement of the project, all supervisory personnel should carefully
review these construction and installation instructions. A BEBO representative
can be made available on request at the construction site during the installation. The
responsibilities of this representative are to provide advice on the installation of the
BEBO System and to act as an observer. If he observes any incorrect or unsafe
practices, these will immediately be drawn to the attention of the site supervisor for
his action.
The information and data presented is intended for general construction purposes
only. Application of the BEBO Arch System and specific data for each installation
must be evaluated by a Consulting Engineer to determine suitability, possible
construction problems and other factors affecting the installation. Statements in this
guide are not to be construed as guarantees nor implied warranties.
In addition to the present Instructions the BEBO System Risk List must be
considered. The BEBO System Risk List forms an integral part of the BEBO System.

B.2 FOUNDATIONS
B.2.1 Types of Foundation
Various types of foundations can be used for BEBO System structures, the type
depending on the circumstances that are encountered at each specific site but most
often, cast-in-place footings are used.
The foundations for arch elements must be connected by reinforcement to form
one monolithic body. Expansion joints are not necessary. Shrinkage and
temperature cracks are acceptable and do not detract from system performance,
durability and safety.

B.2.2 Critical Dimensions for Foundations

To ensure correct installation of the BEBO System elements, care and caution must
be exercised in forming the support areas for the arches, spandrel and wing wall
elements. Exercising special care will facilitate the rapid installation of the precast
components.

Before starting installation procedures, check the following items:

• Distance (dimension so) between two opposite arch inner keys; to be the arch
inside span (see figure B1 and Appendix A) minus 200 mm approximately.

• Distance (dimension s1) between two opposite arch outer keys; to be the arch
outside span (see figure B1 and Appendix A) plus 200 mm approximately.
Figure B1a: Dimension s0 and s1 between Arch Inner and Outer Keyway

Figure B1b: Square Dimension L3 and L4 between Arch Inner and Outer Keyway

 Alignment of the arch key along the length of the foundation to

ensure straightness of the keyway.

 Total length of the arch foundation in order to calculate the exact spacing
needed between the arch elements.

 Dimension of the arch foundation (L3 & L4) in order to check squareness of the
foundation.
B.2.3 Arch Element Leveling Pads
Mortar leveling pads must be poured in the arch keys to guarantee correct seating of
the arch elements. Leveling pads must be approximately 50 mm thick and 600 mm
long to ensure that each arch element is resting on the pad approximately 300 mm at
each joint (see Figure B2 and Figure B3).

Figure B2: Arch Element Leveling Pads

The leveling pads are to be poured to within 3 mm of the required elevation.

Figure B3: Leveling pads

The proportion, by loose volume, of cement to sand for the mortar mix must be 1 to
2.
No loads are allowed on the mortar leveling pads within 72 hours of their
placement. Alternatively, fast setting cement can be used.
B.2.4 Scour Protection
Install scour protection to footings and bed of stream if required to prevent scouring
that can cause bridge to collapse, in accordance to the recommendations or details
from the project consultant.

B.2.5 Drainage
The design of the standard system elements makes no specific allowance for
hydrostatic pressure due to high ground water levels. Thus the structure should be
adequately drained. Suggested drainage lines are shown in Figure B4.
In order to avoid washing out of fines (piping) all drainage lines (including weep
holes) must be enclosed in or covered by appropriate filters (geotextile and/or
filter packages).
Note: Severe damage can happen to the structure if fines are washed out.

Figure B4: Drainage Lines

C. INSTALLATION PROCEDURES FOR THE
PRECAST ELEMENTS

C.1 General Requirements

Arch elements should be stored on the level ground at the job site only if appropriate
protection measures are taken. Ideally they should be delivered to site, lifted from the
trailers and set directly on the foundation. Spandrel wall segments (if applicable) may
be unloaded and placed on the ground at site with proper stacking procedures. The
spandrel wall segments can only be installed when the foundation keyway and the
crown joints are fully grouted to the required grout strength.
The contractor must provide one or two cranes with sufficient capacity for the
installation of the precast elements. For certain series of Bebo arch element, the
contractor are required to provide additional 2 nos of lower capacity crane for
turning in the air.
It is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure that cranes of the correct lifting
capacity are available to handle the precast units. This can be accomplished by using
the weights given for the BEBO System components and by determining the lifting
reach for each crane unit. Site conditions must be checked well in advance (it is
advisable together in the presence of the crane operator who will be installing
the elements) of shipping to ensure proper crane location and to avoid any lifting
restrictions.
The lift anchors provided in each unit are the only means to be used to lift the precast
elements. The elements must not be supported, stored or raised by other means
than those given in the manuals and drawings.

C.2 Installation of Arch Elements

A sufficient quantity of 75mm x 125mm x 125mm length hardwood wedges must
be available on site for use as wedging blocks to prevent lateral spreading of the arch
after positioning. Also a good supply of 2mm and 3mm thick (75mm width x
100mm length) steel plate shims for various shimming purposes should be on site.
Measure from the end of the foundation and mark the top of each leveling pad where
each arch is to be placed (full element shape including spacing between the arch
elements, see figure B3). Spacing between the arch elements is approximately 15
mm. Check the total length of the foundation against this value. It is very helpful to
have 12 mm thick plywood available to assist in spacing the arch elements as they
are being positioned.

C.2.1 Twin-Leaf Arches

Twin-leaf arch elements are shipped in the upright (as cast) position. Ideally, one
crane shall be located on each side (outer side) of the foundations to independently
lift half-arch units from the trailers and placing the element at the marking on top of
the leveling pad. Alternatively, the cranes can be positioned on the same side of the
foundations or within the arch span for installation, depending on the advice of the
crane operator. The two twin units are lifted and positioned simultaneously.
As for the lifting and rotating operation for the twin-leaf arch elements, one of
the cranes will lift the BEBO element and another crane will rotate the BEBO arch
element into installation position after the BEBO arch element is lifted up in the air as
shown in figure C1 and C2.

Figure C1: Initial Lifting of the Twin Leaf Arch Units (per leaf)

Figure C2: Arch Element in Installation Position (per leaf)

Figure C3: Installation for twin-leaf arch elements

The arch element is then lowered into the foundation key (see Figure C3) by placing
the element at the marking on top of the leveling pad. It is imperative that any lateral
spreading of the arch element be avoided after it is installed. Therefore, before
releasing the load of each arch half unit from the crane, the hardwood timber
wedge blocks are used to secure the elements in the correct position and the
curved tie rod must be inserted and fixed in the block-outs at the crown joint (see
Figure C4 and Figure C5). Steel shim plate will be used for fine adjustment of
verticality if necessary before complete release of the arch elements from the crane.

Figure C4: Hardwood timber wedge blocks to secure arch elements

Figure C5: Block-outs at crown joint

Once correctly positioned and aligned, the grouting of the key way has to be carried
out first. For the twin-leaf units, join the crown with curved tie rods, add rebars as
required (see Figure C5 and detail drawings) and then cast-in-place concrete as
shown in the drawings.
BEBO System twin-leaf profiles are designed for the arch dead load to act on
the three-pinned arch. In case scaffoldings are used for the installation, they
must be removed (or lowered) before the crown joint is cast.
The required compressive strengths (28 days) for the cast-in-place crown joint
concrete are listed in Appendix B of this document.

Ensure that an “Arch End Element” (arch element with curb or starter bars) is placed
as the first and last unit.

C.3 Jointing Details

For jointing details in between the installed arches, waterproofing (if applicable) or
geotextile is applied with the details as per shown in drawing. There are 3 areas to be
taken care off.

C.3.1 Gap between elements.

The design nominal gaps are 15mm. 25mm diameter backer rods are inserted
between the gaps and then bridged with 10mm thickness of sealant (Ref. to joint
details drawing.) This sealant is filled to the base of the chamfer. The chamfer is then
filled with cement/sand mortar. A primer for waterproofing membrane (if applicable)
or geotextile is applied according to manufacturer’s recommendation and project
requirement. A 300mm width of water proofing membrane (if applicable) or geotextile
is laid across the joint as per detail drawings.

C.3.2 Crown joints

After concreting of the crown joints, the circumference of the pocket has to be water
proof (if applicable) or geotextile as per detail drawings.
C.3.3 Base of BEBO elements

After grouting of the keyway, a strip of membrane is laid to the longitudinal base of
the keyway. A coat of prime is required and a strip of 500mm-width membrane is laid
according to manufacturer’s specification and project requirement.

Figure C4: Section through Keyway at Leveling Pad Position

C.6. Grouting
2
All grout shall be 40 N/mm (or as specified in the drawings) with a maximum
aggregate of 10mm and a maximum water/cement ratio of 0.40 in order to reduce
shrinkage effects. The grout must be sufficiently flowable so that it completely fills all
voids and are well compacted.
Fill the arch keyway with grout. Make sure that the space directly beneath the Bebo
element legs is completely filled and well compacted. This could be carried out
with internal tube vibrator.
Fill the installation anchor recesses with cement/sand mortar.
D. SPECIFICATIONS FOR BACKFILLING

The backfilling operations creates one of the most important series of loads
experienced by the structure.
The backfill is an integral, load carrying part of the structure. It must permanently
fulfill its purpose.
Severe damage to the structure can result if proper procedures are not followed.

D.1 Critical Backfill Zones

The critical zones for backfilling are as indicated in the figure below :

Figure D1: Critical Zones for Backfilling

Zone A : Existing soil, well compacted constructed embankment or overfill

Zone B : Fill which is directly associated with bridge installation

Zone C : Road Structure.

D.2 Required Fill Properties

D.2.1 Zone A
Zone A requires natural ground or fill material with specifications and filling as
well as compacting procedures equal to that for normal road embankments.

Natural ground is to be sufficiently stable to allow effective support to the

arch units. As a guide, the existing natural ground should be of similar quality
and density to Zone B material for a minimum lateral dimension of one arch
span outside of the arch footing.
D.2.2 Zone B
Generally, soils that meet the following basic requirements are acceptable :

’ ≥ 30 (angle of internal friction, in compacted state)

WL ≤ 40% (liquid limit)

Ip ≤ 10% (plasticity index)

Soils shall be reasonably free of organic matter, and, near concrete surfaces,
free of stones larger than 75mm in diameter.

Materials with gradations that fall within the following limits (shaded area of
Figure D2), normally fulfill the above basic requirements:

Figure D2: Zone B Gradation Limits

Soils should have a water content that allows obtaining the required
compactions. This is especially critical for soils of the USCS groups SM-ML
and SM-SC.

In order to avoid collapse settlement, soils should have water content at the
Proctor Optimum or slightly on the wet side. Avoid compacting of soils on the
dry side of the Proctor Optimum moisture content.

The following USCS soils groups are not acceptable as backfill material in
their natural state:

GC-CH (gravel with high plasticity clay)

SC-CH (sand with high plasticity clay)
CL (gravelly and/or sandy, clayey silt)
OL (gravelly and/or sandy, organic silt)
CH (gravelly and/or sandy, silty clay)
OH (gravelly and/or sandy organic silty clay)
MH (gravelly and/or sandy high plasticity silt)

Material of the soil groups GC-CH and SC-CH can be improved (“soil
cement”) by adding cement or lime and used for backfilling. However, special
know-how and testing will be necessary.

The suitability of backfill material can also be determined using AASHTO

Designation M 145-87. In general, soils groups A-1, A-2, A-3 and A-4 are
acceptable (see table below, Bureau of Public Roads Classification).

Group Index GI = (F – 35) ∙ [0.2 + 0.005 ∙ (LL – 40) + 0.01∙ (F-15) ∙ (PI – 10), in
which :

F = Percentage passing No. 200 (0.074 mm) sieve, expressed as a

whole number. This percentage is based only on the material
passing the 3-in (75 mm) sieve.
LL = Liquid Limit
PI = Plasticity index

Index No. 0 – 4 indicates a “good” material

Index No. 5 – 14 indicates a “fair” material
Index No. 15 – 19 indicates a “poor” material
Index No. 20 or greater indicates a “very poor” material

The necessary fill properties for Zone B can also be achieved by the use of
Controlled Low-Strength Materials (CLSM; flowable or self-compacting fill).

This can be particularly beneficial in restricted conditions (narrow

excavations) where compacting is difficult and/or when placement of backfill
is time-consuming (multiple-span structures). Compressive strengths of this
CLSM of 0.7 N/mm2 or even less are appropriate.
D.2.3 Zone C

Zone C is the road section of gravel, asphalt or concrete built in compliance

with local engineering practice. Standard minimum overfill is 0.5 m over
the crown of the arch, including pavement. There should be at least
100 mm of select fill between the arch extrados and the bottom of the
pavement.

All standard designs use specific weight of 20 kN/m3 for Zone B and C
material. Differing specific weights (lightweight fill, iron ore, etc) need to be
analyzed separately and checked by BEBOI Arch International AG.

E.1. PLACING AND COMPACTING OF FILL

Backfilling operations at the sides of the arch shall not commence before the keyway
2
grout has attained half of the required final compressive strength, i.e. 40 N/mm .

With twin-leaf arches, the cast-in-place crown joint concrete must attain the required
compressive strength (see Appendix B) prior to the start of the backfilling operations.
Dumping for backfilling is not allowed any nearer than 3 ft (0.9 m) to a vertical
plane through the arch key.

Figure E1: Restrictions on Dumping of Fill Material

The fill must be placed and compacted in layers not exceeding one foot (0.3 m). The
maximum difference in the surface levels of the fill on opposite sides of the arch
must not exceed 2 feet (0.6 m). Marks are painted and numbered on arch elements
to indicate each backfill level. This serves as a guide for equipment operators and
helps to ensure that the maximum difference is not exceeded.

Figure E2: Guidance for Backfill Steps

The fill behind wing walls must be placed at the same time as that of the arch fill in
horizontal layers not exceeding one foot per layer.

The backfill of Zone B must be compacted to a minimum density of: 98% as

required by AASHTO T-99 (Proctor Standard Density).

To avoid damage, fill adjacent to the arch and spandrel walls as indicated below
should be compacted using hand-operated equipment.

Figure E3a: Around Arch

Figure E3b: At Spandrel Wall

Figure E4a: Compaction with “Jumping Jack”

Figure E4b: Hand-operated and Heavy Compaction Equipment

Heavy vibrating compaction equipment should be started and switched off outside
the limits as shown for dumping in Figure E4 and the vibration frequency should be at
least 30 revolutions per second.
There are no special requirements for the backfill material and compacting behind
wing walls except that each should satisfy the criteria for normal road embankments.

E.2. Weight Restrictions for Construction Machinery

In the immediate area of the arch, there are restrictions for the use of heavy
construction machinery during backfilling operations:
The bare arch may not be crossed by any construction equipment.
The shaded area in Figure E5 is restricted to construction equipment with a
maximum weight of 10 tons.

3 ft 3 ft

Figure E5: Weight Restriction Area

After the compacted fill level has reached a minimum of 1 foot (0.3 m) over the crown
of the arch, construction equipment with a maximum weight of 30 tons may cross the
arch.
After the compacted fill level has reached 18 inches (0.45 m) over the crown of the
arch, construction equipment within the design load limits for the road may cross the
arch.
Extra heavy equipment may cross the arch at greater depths of overfill. Consult
BEBO Arch International AG engineers for determining the minimum depth of overfill
for specific extra heavy equipment.

TOTAL RATED LOADS

1. The total rated loads shown are for the case where the outriggers are set horizontally on firm level ground. The
values above the bold lines are based on the crane strength while those below are based on the crane stability.
2. The weights of the slings and hooks (120t hook: 1,300kg※, 50t hook: 600kg, 8t hook: 250kg) are included in the total
rated loads shown.
※ The boom-side attachment (100kg) is included.
3. The total rated load is based on the actual working radius including the deflection of the boom.
4. The table below shows the classification of Performances A to G of the total rated load.

Counterweight
22t 12t
Outrigger extension width
8.0m A B
7.0m C D
5.3m E F
4.6m F* G* Mark* shows the performance of the boom.
5. The table below shows the standard number of part lines for each boom length. The load per line should not exceed
7.5t for the main winch and 8.0t for the auxiliary winch.

A 12.2m 21.0m 29.8m 38.7m 47.5m J

H (17)13 7 5 4 4 1

A= Boom length H= No. of part-lines J= Jib/Single top

The value in parenthesis is for the case where an attachment is used.
6. The total rated load for the single top shall be the value obtained by subtracting the weight of the hook mounted to
the boom from the total rated load of the boom and must not exceed 8.0t.
7. Jib operation should be performed on the basis of the boom angle. The working radii are reference values for the
case where a jib is mounted to a 47.5m boom.
8. The jib should be operated with the boom "telescoping method I".
9. When the maximum instantaneous velocity is 10m/s or more, stop crane operation.

TOTAL RATED LOADS

1. The total rated loads shown are for the case where the outriggers are set horizontally on firm level ground. The
values above the bold lines are based on the crane strength while those below are based on the crane stability.
2. The weights of the slings and hooks (50t hook: 600kg, 8t hook: 250kg) are included in the total rated loads shown.
3. The total rated load is based on the actual working radius including the deflection of the boom.
4. The table below shows the classification of Performances LA to LC of the total rated load.
