Learning Competency:
 Explain the key differences between so-called digital natives and digital
migrants.
LS6DL-DC-PSA-LE/AE/LS/AS-3

In this lesson you will learn the importance of the distinction of digital natives
and digital migrants. In this module you will learn also if what type of generation do
you belong in the field of technology.

The reluctant adopters realize technology is a part of today's world and they
try to engage with it, but it feels alien and unintuitive. This group is widely diverse
1
and probably includes most of the digital immigrant group. While they may have a
basic cell phone, they do not text if they can help it.

Digital Devices- a physical unit of equipment that contains a

computer or microcontroller. Today, myriad devices are digital
including a smartphone, tablet and smartwatch.

Digital Native- The term digital native describes a person

who has grown up in the digital age, rather than having
acquired familiarity with digital systems as an adult, as a
digital immigrant. "Digital native" and applies it to a new
group of students enrolling in educational establishments
referring to the young generation as "native speakers" of the
digital language of computers, videos, video games, social
media and other sites on the internet.

'Digital natives' are generally born after the 1980s and they
are comfortable in the digital age, because they grew up
using technology, but 'digital immigrants' are those who are
born before 1980s and they are fearful about using
technology.

Digital Immigrants- a person born or brought up before the widespread use

of digital technology.

Digital immigrant is a term coined by Mark Prensky in 2001 to describe

anyone who grew up prior to the digital age. Generally, people are
considered to be digital immigrants if they were born prior to 1985.

A digital immigrant is a person who grew up before the internet and other digital
computing devices were ubiquitous - and so have had to adapt and learn these technologies.
Generally those born before the year 1985 (those before the Millennial generation) are
considered to be digital immigrants.

As proclaimed by Prensky (Marc Prensky is an

American writer and speaker on education. He is best
known as the inventor and popularizer of the terms
"Digital native" and "digital immigrant" which he described
in a 2001 article in "On the Horizon".), people who were
5
not born in the digital era and later adopted the new technology are named as “digital
immigrants” whereas people who were born during or after the digital era are dubbed
“digital natives”
Difference Between Digital Native and Digital Immigrants

Digital Natives
 Like constant connectivity
 Prefer to bring their own ubiquitous technologies
 Prefer immediacy and have short attention spans
 Use texting and instant message short-hand such as: “c u”, “how r u”, “becoz”
 Going to the internet first for information
 Prefer to socialise online and weak in face-to-face communication

Digital Immigrants
 Prefer to talk on the phone or in person
 Value ‘proper’ English when texting
 Prefer formal communication channels, such as phone, detailed emails, or face-to-face
communication
 Do not understand the slang words or phrases on the internet, such as “idk”, “brb”,
“t2yl”
 Printing things out as opposed to working on screen

Learning from the natives

From the natives, the immigrants can learn to be more open and willing to engage with
learners of differing backgrounds. They can learn from the natives how to sift through and
focus resources, which are aplenty and are not as overwhelming for the native. They can learn
to scale the learning and create what is possible.

Learning from the immigrants

Digital immigrants can teach natives to achieve goals quickly. They can help the “techno-
wizards” scale the learning and create what is possible. They can look at the existing
institutions and re-purpose them or rethink their vitality. A Native may be able to offer great
6
ideas for layouts, image, design and labeling, while the immigrant would contribute their
knowledge to storytelling and the value of including worthy artifacts.
