LABORATORY NO.1B
Identification of Morphological Characters
Associated with Crop Productivity, Adaptability and Marketability

Name: __________________________ Date Submitted:_____________ Score/Rating:____

Section: ________________________
I. Introduction
Create your own introduction regarding the importance of knowing the unique
morphological structure and their functions in improving the yield and quality of produce
(minimum of 5 sentences and cite references).

II. Learning Outcomes

At the end of the exercise, the student should be able to:

1. Describe the different unique morphological characters of crops;
2. Identify the functions of the unique morphological characteristics of crops; and
3. Associate the different morphological characters to crop productivity, adaptability, and
marketability.

III. Procedures

1B.1. Provide the scientific name of the crop, then identify the morphological characters of the
plant organ specified for each item. For each morphological character, identify its function and
indicate whether it is associated to crop productivity, adaptability, and/or marketability. For
samples with more than one morphological character, identify their functions and associations
separately. Likewise, for morphological characters with multiple functions, identify their association
(adaptability, productivity, marketability) individually. The first item will serve as an example. (36 pts)
*3 points per crop (1 point –scientific name; 1 point –descriptions/functions of morphological characters; 1 point –association
of the morphological structure to the crop’s productivity, adaptability, and/or marketability)

IV. Study Question

1. Differentiate erectophile from planophile plants. In relation to crop production, which

plant will give greater benefit? Why?

crop example for each characteristic.
Morphological Characteristic P A M Plant example
1. large root
2. leaf/stem with trichomes
3. numerous petals
4. enlarged stem
5. numerous tillers
6. large/numerous pods
7. large leaf
8. overlapping petals and sepals
9. stem/root nodules
10. separate male/female flowers
11. fibrous/extensive root system
12. brace roots
13. short internodes
14. waxy and thick leaves
15. large flowers
16. long stalk
