HOW TO MAKE YOUR
TINY ZION LION POM
This hat is made in the round using double-
pointed needles. This means no sewing up at
the end, hurrah!
1 Cast on 24 stitches using the cable cast
on technique. Split your stitches evenly
over 3 needles.
2 Work 3 rounds in 1x1 rib stitch.
3 Work 8 rounds in stocking stitch
(knit every round).
4 Decrease round: HKnit 4 stitches, knit
2 stitches togetherH repeat the section
between the stars a further 3 times. (20
stitches.)
5 Knit 1 round.
6 Decrease round: HKnit 3 stitches, knit
2 stitches togetherH repeat the section
between the stars a further 3 times. (16
stitches.)
7 Knit 1 round.
8 Decrease round: HKnit 2 stitches, knit
2 stitches togetherH repeat the section
between the stars a further 3 times. (12
stitches.)
9 Cut the yarn, leaving a 20 cm (8”) tail.
Thread your sewing needle with this, and
insert the needle and yarn through each
of the stitches on your knitting needle.
Now remove the knitting needle, and
pull on the yarn tail to close up the top
of your hat.
ADDING THE POM POM
1 Hold your index and middle finger
together and stick them out.
2 Take a piece of yarn and wrap it around
your fingers approx. 20-25 times or until
your think its enough to form a good
pom.
3 Take another piece of yarn and, if you
can, thread it between your two fingers,
around the wrapped yarn and tie in a
tight knot to hold the bundle together.
If you cant get the yarn between your
fingers, carefully remove the wrapped
yarn from your fingers and tie your new
piece of yarn around it here.
4 Once the bundle of yarn is secured, cut
through the folded ends of the yarn to
release the fluffiness.
5 Squish the newly formed pom until it is
in a good shape and then trim around to
neaten, leaving two strands of yarn long
enough to tie into your tiny hat.
6 Thread the two longer strands through
the top of your hat using the sewing
needle. Tie on the inside of the hat and
weave in any loose ends.
KNITTING TECHNIQUES
Work! Work! Work!
There are two main ways to ‘work’ stitches:
they can be knitted or purled. When the
pattern asks you to ‘work’ a number of
stitches/rows/cm, it will always specify
which stitch pattern to work in.
Knitting with double-pointed needles

Using double-pointed needles allows you to
work in the round, creating a ‘tube’ of knitting
that doesn’t require sewing up - particularly
suitable for smaller items like socks and
mittens. When casting on your stitches, divide
them evenly over three of your needles - the
fourth one is your ‘working needle’ that you
will keep in your right hand. When you’re done
casting on, bring the first and the third needle
together so that the first and last stitch are
right next to each other. Begin knitting your
first round by knitting across the stitches on
the first needle (this joins your knitting into a
circle), and then each of the other needles. As
you knit, stitches will move across from the
needle in your left hand onto your right needle
- when you have knitted all the stitches from
one needle, transfer the newly empty needle
into your right hand and work the stitches
from the next needle.

Create a slipknot on the left hand needle.
Work a knit stitch, but do not slip the stitch
off the left needle. Bring the right needle up
and place the stitch onto the left needle. Pull
out the right needle. Now you will have two
stitches on your left needle. Now insert the
right needle between the two stitches, wrap
and bring through. Transfer the newly created
stitch onto the left hand needle. Repeat until
you have the number of stitches needed.

Knit the first stitch, purl the
next. Continue alternating
between knit and purl stitches to
the end of your row. Repeat
this row.
Stocking stitch Ø Online video tutorial
A basic stitch pattern where all the
stitches of the first row are
knitted, and on the second row
they are purled. When working
in the round, you will knit every
round. The ‘right’ side of the
fabric looks like a series of ‘Vs’
and the ‘wrong’ side of the
fabric looks like a series of ‘waves’.
Decrease (k2tog) / Ø Online video tutorial
Instead of knitting only one stitch
at a time, knit two stitches
together. Insert the front of your
right needle through the first
two stitches of the left needle,
then knit them together as a
single stitch.
Weaving in the ends / Ø Online video tutorial
Weave the ends of your yarn into your
knitting to finish it off and stop it from
unravelling. Thread the tail end of yarn into
the sewing needle. Weave the yarn through
the stiches in the wrong side of the work,
following the natural stitch direction created
when the piece was knitted. Weave in
approximately 10cm/4’’, then cut the tail.
