ACTIVITY NO. 02
Roots of Equations: Bracketing Methods

Instruction:
1. Write your answers and solutions in a clean sheet of short bond paper and underline your
final answers if applicable.
2. Everything should be hand written and make your outputs clean and presentable.
3. Print this file and use it as first page cover of your outputs.
4. Physical outputs should be submitted on or before October 9, 2021 at Aldersgate College.
Part I. Understanding
1. What are Numerical Roots?
2. Explain Graphical Method in obtaining roots of equation.
3. Differentiate Bracketing Method and Initial Guesses/

Schedule: 3:00 – 8:00 pm, Saturday

Part II. Application

1. Determine the positive real root of ln(𝑥 2 ) = 0.7
a. Graphically
b. Using three iterations of the bisection method, with initial guesses of 𝑥𝑙 =
0.5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥𝑢 = 2
c. Using three iterations of the false – position method, with the same initial guesses as
in problem “b”.
2.
a. Determine the roots of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = −12 − 21𝑥 + 18𝑥 2 − 2.75𝑥 3 graphically.
b. Determine the first root of the function with bisection
c. Determine the first root of the function with false position.
For problem “b” and “c” use initial guesses of 𝑥𝑙 = −1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥𝑢 = 0 and a
stopping criterion of 1%.
3. Locate the first nontrivial root of sin(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 where x is in radians. Use a graphical
technique and bisection with the initial interval form 0.5 to 1. Perform the compution
until 𝜀𝑎 is less than 𝜀𝑠 = 2%.
