The global issue of abuse of Politics, and power is being exhibited in these panels Because in panel 2

through 6 of page 21, there is a British general talking to Reza, which at the time is just an average
soldier, who has aspiring dreams. The British general deceives the soldier (Reza) by polluting his mind
with the lust for power, and the only way to get that power is through him and his influence. The only
cost is that when he does become the emperor, he will be supplied with oil. After the conversation not
only did the British generals influence grow in Persia, but his power grew with the added commodity of
oil in his Arsenal. This brings down the justice system in the world, and makes it a worse place to live in.

Marjan Satrapi explores the problems of abuse of power in the world by displaying great heights of
power, that the emperor of Persia has. In panel 5 and 6 of page 21, the colonizer states that “You will
have everything. Power, Shoe shiners and even more. Anything you want in cash” Marjan uses
hyperbole in this quotation to help represent the superiority that the Emperor of Persia, has and how
everyone beneath him, is a shoe shiner. The implied meaning of shoe shiner is someone who is beneath
everyone else, everyone talks down upon the “Shoe shiner”. When the colonizer starts polluting the
soldiers mind with this awful leadership mentality, it just keeps that bad state of mind going for more
generations and inflates the ego of the new emperor. These panels demonstrate the abuse of power
that the new emperor is going to adopt, and that links to our global issue of choice, which is politics,
power, and justice. The hyperbole in questions reveals to us how the new emperor, completely
disregarded the lower class, and put on political reforms that benefitted no one except for him and the
top 1% of Iran. Also, In panel 3 of page 21, the British general replied to Reza’s statement saying “The
religious leaders are against it and they are right, A vast country likes yours needs a symbol”. At the time
Persia was a country rich of oil, this interested all the neighboring empires, and by deceiving Reza into
becoming the emperor, it is setting them up for a vast enjoyment of the commodity that the Emperor
Reza is so generously providing.

To encapsulate, Marjan Satrapi does an excellent job using hyperbole, in demonstrating the abuse of the
Power and politics that the emperor has committed, and social injustice done by the Shah. This lets the
reader sympathize and try to understand how the lower class in Iran was living through the Shahs reign
over Iran, and the Joy that went through the Persians, when he was abdicated from his rule.
