apartments for residents. This highlights that Kingston is being renovated and being
changed to fit more residents in the suburb and to attract people to live there.

History of Kingston Foreshore

Kingston used to be a suburb called Eastlake and was part of Australia’s industrial sector. It
housed many things such as the original Powerhouse, Fitters’ Workshop, a Bus and
Transport Depot, Government Printing Office and small industrial businesses or workshops.
Some of the suburb was built for housing for workers working at the Causeway in Kingston.
Right now, the Causeway still exists along with wooden cottages that have been replaced
with brick cottages now. During 1995, the ACT government made the decision to swap land
with the Federal government, in order to gain control of Kingston and they began the
redevelopment and renovation of Kingston. (Suburban Land Agency, ACT,2022)

Population Growth in Canberra and the challenges they faced

This graph shows the growth in population for Canberra and that it is most likely that its
growth rate is going to increase over the next few years. There are multiple reasons behind
this population growth. One of them is because more people are migrating to Canberra
because they wish to live in an area with a lot of multicultural diversity, which is increasing
the population growth. It is also because Canberra has one of the lowest unemployment
rates in Australia meaning that there are lots of job positions, leading to people without jobs
to flock to Canberra. Canberra’s population is also growing because it has the Government
in it, allowing economic stability in it and that it doesn’t have to be reliant on resources such
as mining and tourism. People also move to Canberra because of how many things that they
are developing and renovating. These people wish to live in a modern or newly built house,
meaning that they go to Canberra, increasing its population. (Burgess Rawson,2022)

Housing Issues created from Population Growth

The issue that population growth raises to housing, is a lack of sufficient, affordable and
good quality accommodation to suit the rising population. Some evidence that highlights this
issue, are the words, ”Population growth is a major underlying factor for the demand of
housing and without a new supply of dwellings, it pushes up the prices for both renting and
purchasing dwellings'', from Angelo Karantonis’s case study on population growth. This tells
us that because of population growth and an inability to create new housing fast enough, the
cost of renting and buying a house has increased as more people immigrate and seek to buy
or rent a house, causing this increase. This is reinforced by the graph below which highlights
the rising cost of residential areas in Canberra and other parts of the country, which have all
increased according to the data.

To counteract this issue, the Government has created the Regional Housing Taskforce. Their
job is to speak with the government and experts of the housing and development industry, to
provide advice about the findings of this consultation and to recommend ideas to reduce the
cost of housing in the ACT and NSW areas. They have also begun more development
projects of apartments and housing. This is shown through the image below from an article
in the Sydney Herald talking about Canberra's boom in development. This image shows an
example of construction of new residential areas .
