About

MRF Ltd. India‟s largest manufacturer of automotive tyres and tubes, was
incorporated as a private limited company in1960 to take over the business of
a partnership firm called the Madras Rubber Factory, started by late Sri. K. M
Mammen Mapillai. The company was converted into a public limited
company in April 1961. MRF entered tyre manufacturing in 1962 through a
technical collaboration with Mansfield, USA. Over the years, the company
has established its own R&D center and currently functions independently.

FunskoolIndia, a Joint venture between Hasbro and MRF, is a major toy
manufacturing company in the country. MF Pretreads offers world class
precured tyre retreading service, and MRF Muscle Flex is involved in making
conveyor belts. It is presently under the leadership of VinooMammen, son of
the late K.M. Mammen Mappillai. Mr. Arun Mammen - Managing Director
of the Company w.e.f April 1,2004.

MRF has been involved in the development of cricket through its sponsorship
of many cricketers and MRF Pace Foundation. At one point of time, MRF
was the bat sponsor of world-class batsman includingBrian Lara, Sachin
Tendulkar and Australian captain Steve Waugh.Sachin now uses Adidas bats,
and MRF are currently sponsoring Gautam Gambhir and Rohit sharma two
other members of the Indian Cricket team.

variants, MRF holds the highest market share of 22% in terms of sales
volume in the tyre industry.MRF also manufacturers its MUSCLE FLEX
brand of conveyor belting at one of the most at the most advanced “ State of
the Art”, facilities in India.MRF pretreads is yet another innovation from
MRF industries which is the most advanced procured retreading system in
India.Become the first domestic company to venture into the niche area of
developing and manufacturing of aviation tyres branded “ Aero Muscle” for
helicopters and aircrafts which targeted the defense sector.

HISTORY

Madras Rubber Factory was started by K. M. Mammen Mappillai as a toy


balloon manufacturing unit in 1946 at Tiruvottiyur, Madras (now Chennai).
In 1952, the company ventured into the manufacture of tread rubber.Madras
Rubber Factory limited was incorporated as a private company in November
1960 and ventured into manufacture of tyres in partnership with Mansfield
Tire & Rubber company based in Ohio, United States.The company went
public on 1 April 1961 and an office was established in Beirut, Lebanon to
develop the export market in 1964 and its current logo of the muscleman was
born.In 1967, it became the first Indian company to export tyres to USA.In
1973, MRF started manufacturing Nylon tyres for the first time. The
company entered into a technical know-how collaboration with B. F.
Goodrich in 1978.The Mansfield Tire & Rubber Co sold out its share in 1979
and the name of the company was changed to MRF Ltd in the year. The
company finalized a technical collaboration agreement with Marangoni TRS
SPA, Italy for the manufacture of pre-cured tread rubber for the retreading
industry. MRF tyres supplied tyres to Maruti 800, India's first modern small
car.In 1989, the company collaborated with Hasbro International, the world's
largest toy maker and launched Funskool India. Also, they entered into a pact
with Vapocure of Australia to manufacture polyurethane paint formulations
and with Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli for conveyor and elevator belt
manufacture.During the year 2004–05, the product range of the company
expanded with Go-kart & rally tyres and tyres for two/three wheelers.
