CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATE TRANSPORT Spring 2023

(CHME 7350)
HOMEWORK PROBLEM SET # 3

DUE DATE : February 6, 2023

1. The Black Mesa pipeline pumps a slurry of small coat particles in water from a mine to a
∆𝑃
power plant in the four corners. The pressure drop per unit length ( 𝐿 ) through the pipe
depends on the following variables and their t through the pipe depends on the following
variables and their typical conditions:

a. Determine the number of dimensionless groups

b. Identify pertinent dimensionless groups and relate to ‘key’ dimensionless groups from
handout (hint use ρ as one of your core variables)
c. Which dimensionless groups are most significant?

2. An incompressible Newtonian fluid is contained between a pair of long concentric cylinders

with radius R and λR. The inner cylinder rotates with a steady angular velocity Ω. We are
told end effects caused by the finite length of the cylinders can be neglected and the flow is
one dimensional.
Determine as a function of the fluid properties, the angular velocity and the geometry:

a. The velocity profile

b. The pressure profile
c. The magnitude of the force exerted on the outside of the cylinder

3. Consider pressure driven steady laminar flow of water through a horizontal slit where the
walls are porous membranes. Assume the cross-flow velocity 𝑣0 is constant. You can assume
that the typical no-slip boundary condition applies at the walls with respect to 𝑣𝑥 .

a. Is 𝑣𝑥 a function of x, y, or both?
b. What is the pressure a function of?
c. Using dimensional analysis show that the dimensionless velocity can be represented
by the viscosity, pressure drop down the length, and the height of the slit (2h).
d. Solve for the dimensionless velocity profile as a function of dimensionless position
and Reynolds number.
e. Show mathematically happens when 𝑣0 → 0 or 𝑣0 → ∞. What is the physical
meaning of the result of your analysis?
4.

a. Using the r-component of the Navier-Stokes equation as stated in the problem find the
general solution for 𝑣𝑟 (r, z). What are the boundary conditions? Use them to solve for the
integration constants. Which term contains the time dependance?
b. Calculate flow rate q where q = [area/time]
c. Determine an expression for the deposition rate as a function of h using the initial
condition h(t=0) = h0
