ACTIVITY 2 LITE01

Activity: Historical Background of Philippine Literature 


I. Direction: Read in advance the history of Philippine Literature and tell us how our
literature evolves in the following periods.  

1. Pre-colonial Period 

Literature in pre- colonial period based on oral culture. May be classified into three
groups: Folk speech, Folk song and Narrative

2. Spanish Colonization Period 

The Filipino literature of this period became the predecessor of many more literary works
to come in the age, wherein the theme of nationalism and freedom of speech could be
evident.

3. Nationalistic/Propaganda and Revolutionary Period 

Planted seeds of nationalism in Filipino, as well as caused shift in language from Spanish to
Tagalog

4. American Colonial Period  

The first European settlers of North America wrote about their experience starting in the
1600s. This was the earthiest American literature: Practical, and Straightforward

5. Japanese Occupation  

Japanese period has been called one of darkest days in the history of literary traditions of
the Philippines

6. Contemporary/Modern Period

Philippines literature Tagalog was revived during this period.
