3 PILLARS
to a Healthier Home
BY DR VIVIAN CHEN
About Me
Hi, I'm Dr. Chen, a UK doctor, living in California, with 15 years of clinical
experience in internal and family medicine. My world turned upside
down when my daughter was hospitalized soon after being born with
symptoms no doctor could figure out (including myself).

FILTER:
Your indoor air
WHY?
We breathe 11,000 L of air a day!
Indoor air can be 2-50x more
polluted than outdoor air (according
to EPA).
Major culprits - 'fragranced' products
(air fresheners, candles, household
cleaners) adding harmful chemicals
like phthalates (disrupt our
hormones and immune system),
formaldehyde (carcinogen),
benzene, toluene etc; shoes;
cigarette smoke; and mold.
HOW?
Simple ways to improve indoor air
quality:
Open windows for 10minutes
2x/day
Leave shoes outside
Check for mold (esp. bathroom,
fridge, under sink)
Swap with non-toxic household If possible, consider an Air
cleaners, essential oils, less toxic Purifier... I use the AirDoctor
air freshener or better candles because it has an ultra-HEPA filter
(100x more effective than ordinary
HEPA filter) that can capture
airborne allergens & pollutants
(VOC, bacteria/viruses, dust,
mold spores) down to 0.003
microns in size. It can filter the air
in a 2400sqf room once every
hour, or a 900sqf space 3x in an
hour. Learn more about the
AirDoctor here. Other good
brands: Austin and IQ air, around
$500-$800.
FILTER:
Your drinking water
WHY?
Municipal water can be
contaminated with harmful
chemicals (e.g. heavy metals,
pesticides, prescription medications),
industrial solvents, weed killers,
refrigerants and even rocket fuel
component perchlorate (check EWG
study).
Bottled water isn't the solution. Plastic
bottles can be a source of endocrine
disruptors (affect hormonal and
reproductive health), while glass
bottles are costly and inconvenient.
They are also not subject to strict
water testing standards.
HOW?
Invest in a quality water filter. Three
basic types of water filters include
carbon filtration, reverse osmosis,
and ion exchange, each with its own
pros & cons. The best water filter is
one certified by a third party (NSF) to
be effective at filtering specific
contaminants based on where you
live. I like:

REDUCE:
Plastics + Nonstick
WHY?
BPA plastics can be found in food
packaging, canned food, storage
containers and kitchenwares. Even
BPA-free products may contain
substitutes like BPF/BPS which have
been shown to have similar
biological effects as BPA in animal
studies.
Non-stick/Teflon emits chemicals
from the PFAS family (Per- and
polyfluoroalkyl substances) incl.
PFOA, PFOS, PTFE, GenX. These 'forever
chemicals' do not break down easily
and are now found in our
water/environment.
PFAs have been linked to thyroid
disease, fertility issues, low birth

Cast iron, stainless steel, or
100% ceramic cookware (check
out my cookware guide).
Whole piece wooden cutting
boards rather than plastic.
Avoid microwaving food in
plastic (even if it says
'microwave safe') as it can be
leaching harmful endocrine
disrupters into your food
SWAP:
Household +
Personal Care
products
WHY?
Household and personal care
products can be full of harmful
chemicals, which are skin irritants
and can act as endocrine disruptors.
May affect lung health, cause
irritation and allergic reactions
(asthma, eye & skin), affect our
hormones and long term health
consequences.
Companies are NOT required by law
to list all the ingredients on the label,
many of which have not even been
shown to be safe in humans.
HOW?
Look at ingredients and warnings
listed, and choose better options.
Avoid products with 'Fragrance',
