In computing the median from grouped data in the form of frequency
distribution, the concept is to determine a value such that 50 percent of the
observations fall above this value and the other half below it.

A. Median From Below

Example: Using the same example. Find the median score of 60 students.

A. Median From Above

It has the same steps with the median from below, but the upper limit is
used and finding N/2 starts from above. In other words, the “greater than”
cumulative frequency is used.
Example: Using the same example. Find the median score of 60 students.

When data are grouped in the form of frequency distribution, the modal
class is found in a class limit having the highest frequency. again, if there
are two class limits with greater frequency, the class is said as bimodal; if
three, trimodal; and if many, polymodal.
Example: Using the same example. Find the mode score of 60 students.

MEASURES OF
RELATIVE
POSITION

Quartile Decile Percentile

Objectives

✔ Define Quartile, Percentile, Decile.

✔ Calculate the Quartile, Percentile,
Decile.
✔ Solve problems involving measures
of position.
MEASURES OF
RELATIVE POSITION
As median divides the set of scores into two equal parts, there
are other measures that divide the distribution into one hundred,
four, or ten equal parts. There are the other measures of
position: The Percentile, the quartile, and the deciles.
Quartile
▪ Quartile as the term suggests is a point measure in a scale where
the distribution is divided into four equal parts.
How to compute Quartile?
Example: Using the same example. Find the third quartile of the score of 60
students.

Deciles
▪ The deciles are points that divide a distribution into ten equal parts.
Each part is called a decile. So, D1 = P10, D2 = P20,…, D10 = P100
How to compute Decile?
Example: Using the same example. Find the fourth decile of the score of 60
students.

Percentile
▪ The deciles are points that divide a distribution into ten equal parts.
Each part is called a decile. So, D1 = P10, D2 = P20,…, D10 = P100
How to compute Decile?
Example: Using the same example. Find the 80th percentile of the score of
60 students.
