Vocabulary Journal
Knowing a word means knowing the target word’s definition, its other forms and their spellings, the
collocations, the word’s pronunciation and being able to use them in a sentence in the right context.
You may also learn and remember a word by learning the word’s synonyms and antonyms.
ScOLa Vocabulary Journal will help you study these aspects regularly, help you improve your use of the
dictionary, and equip you with word formation skills. You can also add your personal notes to your
journal.
It is important to bring this booklet with you to your lessons and add other new words that your
teacher introduces about the topic you are studying.
2
How is this booklet organized?
You are given the target word, the section where the word is found, and its other forms with the” part of
the speech” indicated as (v),(n),(adj.) etc. (See Figure 1)
Reactive (adj)
1. You should write the target word’s meaning and/or its synonym, antonym or something that
reminds you of the meaning of the word during your lessons or outside the class.
2. You should write its collocations or commonly used word combinations.
3. You should record example sentences that your teacher suggests or from a dictionary.
4. You should add any other notes about the word (i.e. formal, informal, its usual context, or
reminders etc.)
Your completed ScoLa Vocabulary Journal may look like this (see Figure 2):
REACT (v): Reaction (n) React to a situation He reacted very badly when his
parents divorced.
To show a Reactive (adj)

happened
REVEAL (v): Revelation (n) Reveal a secret Batman only reveals his identity to
certain people who are close to him.
To make known Reveal that...
something that was

previously secret or
unknown
It is important that you use a Monolingual dictionary to complete your journal. You may use the
dictionaries below:
“Word formation” is the creation of new words by using Prefixes and Suffixes.
Knowing about these prefixes and suffixes and analyzing words according to
them will help you guess the meaning of the words in a text more effectively
and expand your vocabulary knowledge and use.
Many English words are formed by taking basic words and adding
combinations of prefixes and suffixes to them.
A “Prefix” gives a specific meaning to a word and it is added to the beginning of the words. For example,
the word “misunderstand” consists of the prefix “mis-” and the word “understand”. Although the word
“understand” has a neutral meaning, with the prefix “mis-”, the word gains a negative “” meaning.
“Mis-” means “wrong”.
misunderstand (v): to understand someone in a wrong way; fail to understand someone in a correct way
(taken from http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/misunderstand)
Suffixes may also have a meaning and help you guess the word’s “part of speech”; in other words, you
can understand whether a word is a noun (n.), an adverb (adv.) or an adjective (adj.) etc. by analyzing
its suffix(es). For example, the word slowly consists of the word slow and the suffix -ly.
A word may have more than one suffix or prefix. For example; re-new-able or
promot-ion-al: verb->noun->adj.
4
In the charts below, you will see common suffixes and prefixes. You will also see their meanings, how
they are used, and example words. These charts will guide you while learning to form new words and
making logical guesses about the meanings of the words in a text.
Please remember that there are also words in English which are exceptional and cannot be generalized.
