Lec 3 Anatomy
The framework of the body consist of bones and other connective tissues , which
protect and supports the body tissues and internal organs .
The human skeleton contains 206 bones , six of which are tiny bones of the middle
ear (three in each ear ) that function in hearing.
1- Bones (skeleton )
2-Joints
3-Cartilages
1- Axial skeleton
1- Compact bone ( cortical bone ) Hard exterior of bone , outer layer , heavy in
nature , forms the diaphysis of long bones
2-Spongy bone (cancellous bone) The interior cavity of bone (trabecular bone) ,
inner layer , spongy , light and soft in nature , forms the epiphysis (ends) of long
bones.
Bone cells
1- Osteoblasts: These are responsible for making new bone and repairing older
bone.
2-Osteoclasts: These are large cell which release enzymes and acids to dissolve
minerals in bone and digest them ; this process called resorption.
Classification of bones :
1- Long bones : Longer than wider , they have a shaft with heads at both ends and
include mostly compact bone , ex : femur bone , humerus bone
2-Short bones : Generally cube shaped , they contain mostly spongy bone . ex :
carpal and tarsal bones .
3-Flat bones : Thin and flattened , they are usually curved , thin layers of compact
bone around a layer of spongy bone , ex : skull ( cranial ) bones , ribs , sternum .
4-Irregular bones : Irregular shape , do not fit into other bone classification
categories , ex : vertebrae , sacrum
- Another type of bone called : Sesamoid bone (bones embedded in tendons ex:
patella
The axial skeleton
Forms the longitudinal part of the body and its divided into 3 parts :
2-Vertebral column
3-Thoracic cage
The skull :
Composed of two sets of bones
2-Facial bones
These bones are joined by suture making them immobile , and only the mandible is
a movable bone .
The paranasal sinuses
1- Frontal
2-Ethmoid
3-Sphenoid
4-Maxillary
The paranasal sinuses are joined to the nasal cavity via small orifices ; so allergic
inflammation or cold ----block orifices ---- block normal drainage of mucus ---
sinusitis
Function of paranasal sinuses
The only bone that does not articulate with another bone Aid in the movement of
tongue and swelling .
- 7 cervical vertebrae
- 12 thoracic vertebrae
- 5 lumbar vertebrae
1- The sternum
2-The ribs
- True (1-7)
- False (8-10)
- Floating (11-12)
The total weight of the upper body rests on the pelvis , the pelvis
supports and balances the trunk and protect several organs (
reproductive organs , urinary bladder , part of large intestine ) .
- Femur bone ( thigh bone )
- Leg bones :
Tibia
Fibula
- Foot bones :
Phalanges ( toes )
