Introduction

The original fiber-based InstaPATCH solution was launched in

2003 and has developed over the years with the latest version
being InstaPATCH 360. In 2008, we introduced the perfect
complement to the fiber solution, the InstaPATCH Cu copper
solution. Both these products have been successfully installed
into many data centers and high-end computer rooms over the
past few years, but with ever increasing transmission speeds
and the advent of the new WBMMF wide band multimode
fiber, a new solution is required that can easily cater for these
proposed new increased data rates. This is the ULL Ultra Low
Loss Fiber Pre-terminated Solution

InstaPATCH Cu

InstaPATCH Cu is based on the industry leading performance

of the SYSTIMAX copper solutions, including GigaSPEED
X10D and GigaSPEED XL. Taking the components of these
solutions CommScope have engineered a pre-terminated, high
density, factory terminated and tested, modular UTP
connectivity system that makes installation simple and quick.
InstaPATCH Cu solutions are ideal for rapid deployment and
high performance. Their modular design supports improved
cable management and scalable capacity.
By avoiding the labor costs associated with traditional, on-site
termination, troubleshooting and rework, these pre-terminated
solutions are a smart investment for any data center or
collocation facility. Additionally, these InstaPATCH Cu
solutions are warranted by CommScope and backed by our
industry-leading connectivity experience.

Because of the way the cable harnesses are bundled and labeled
in the InstaPATCH Cu solution, we have improved cable
management and scalable capacity. The bundles keep cable
management neat and the harness labels make it easy to order
additional harnesses as required.

4) Select the bundling style

Select the unit of measurement, feet or meter. Specify the cable

length of the longest leg. Please refer to the SYSTIMAX design
guide for supported lengths of different channel
configurations.

InstaPATCH Cu Labeling

When placing the order for an InstaPATCH Cu solution, your

labeling designation is printed on the product and the
packages. From the time the first box arrives on location, the
labels will guide your installation every step of the way. Each
harness goes where the customer expects it to, based on the
labeling process.

InstaPATCH Cu

Each boxed harness has a label telling the installation team

where each end of the harness is to be connected to the
network. These are called the source and destination locations.

When the harness is to be removed from the box for

installation, End A (usually the source) of the harness will be
found on the top of the box, and End B (usually the
destination) on the bottom of the box. The particular sample
shown here is from an 1100 module to blunt ends (or
unterminated ends)

Each harness has the individual legs numbered too to make the
installation simple.

Cu Pre-Terminated Benefits Summary

The InstaPATCH Cu copper solution enables significantly

reduced on-site installation time - up to eight times faster than
conventional cabling installation, faster installation and higher
reliability due to factory terminated and tested links

InstaPATCH 360 Fiber Solution

The InstaPATCH 360 solution has been the mainstay in many

data centers over the past few years, but with ever increasing
transmission speeds and the advent of the new WBMMF wide
band multimode fiber, a new solution is required that can
easily cater for these proposed new increased data rates. This is
the ULL Ultra Low Loss Fiber Pre-terminated Solution.

How do InstaPATCH 360 and the ULL Pre-terminated

solution differ?

The InstaPATCH360 has polarity control methods to ensure

polarity is maintained between both ends.

This is achieved by turning over the module at one end (Alpha

to Beta). The trunk cable is female to female with the
cassettes/modules being male.

The ULL Pre-terminated solution also has polarity controls but

there is no need to flip the modules over. The trunk cable is
male to male with the cassettes/modules being female.

ULL Pre-terminated Fiber Solution

Just like InstaPATCH 360, ULL provides polarity control

mechanisms that ensures the signals are correctly routed from
end to end. There are three different polarity systems used for
MPO channels by different manufacturers, meaning that they
are not compatible with one another. InstaPATCH 360 uses
method B which maintains the continuity by flipping over the
module at one end, but SYSTIMAX ULL uses enhanced
method B which means exactly the same continuity capability
but without flipping anything over. This means no more Alpha
Beta labelling making it a simpler plug and play system and
designed for easy upgrades to 24Gig, 40Gig and 100Gig plus+.

Other changes that differentiate between the two systems are

the pin arrangements male/female of the components.
All trunk cables will be male, so pinned and the modules will
be female. The modules also take on a new shape and design
being rectangular and having a squarer front end too. Notice
that the Alpha beta labeling has been removed and replaced
with port number guides.

ULL Components

The ULL range is available in LazrSPEED 550 (OM4) versions

with components in this range being aqua in color. There will
also be LazrSPEED 550 (OM5) and this will be lime green while
TeraSPEED(OS2), where required will continue to be yellow.
Note: ULL is not compatible with InstaPATCH 360.

ULL Modules
The new ULL modules perhaps need some explanation as they
are different to the InstaPATCH 360 ones. This one has three
MPO-8 ports on the back and connects to 12 duplex LC’s on the
front. Notice the numbering 1/2 on the top row and 3/4 on the
bottom row. That is repeated across the module from left to
right in three blocks.
Other examples of 12 and 24 modules /cassettes are also
shown below.

3 x MPO-8 to 12 duplex LC OM5

2 x MPO-12 to 12 Duplex LC OM4

This is a dual MPO-12 to 12 duplex LC (24) module. MPO port

1 serves duplex ports 1 – 6 ports on the bottom row and MPO
port 2 serves duplex ports 7 to 12 on the top row.

ULL Modules

1 x MPO-24 to 12 Duplex LC OM4

A variation on the last module is this one which is an MPO-24

to 12 duplex LC ports with the same numbering arrangements.
1 to 6 on the bottom row and 7 to 12 on the top.

Trunk Cables

Pre-terminated trunk cables come in custom lengths, with

LazrSPEED 550 OM4 or OM5, or TeraSPEED fiber in 12-fiber
increments (12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, and 144), The cables have a
breakout 33” from the end for easy routing. Please check with
your local distributor for minimum and maximum lengths
some of which will dependent on the fiber type specified and
the application required to be run over it.

The MPO Connector

The MPO (Multi-fiber “Push On”) connector was designed

originally by NTT and connects 12 fibers with one connection.
Standardized under IEC-61754-7 and TIA-604-5 it allows for
both multimode & single-mode versions.

Here are the two different gender connectors. The pins and
holes are alignment aids and it is imperative that the 12 cores
are aligned very accurately especially when considering the
TeraSPEED single-mode 8-micron core alignment. You will
also see that the connectors are keyed to help maintain
‘polarity’, and hence duplex control. Note: These connectors
can only be used as part of the channel providing they are
always mated male to female.

MPO connectors are becoming more popular being high

density and can be found in most medium size installations.
Available in either multimode or single-mode and in anything
from 8 core through to 24 core in a single connector. They are
referred to as MPO-8’s, MPO-12’s or MPO-24’s. Identification
is also made easy when looking at patch cables. MPO-8’s have
grey boots, MPO-12’s black boots and MPO-24’s red ones.

SYSTIMAX MPO adapters are easily recognized by their gray

color and are key up to key up which must be used to maintain
polarity. There are others on the market recognizable by their
black color, being key up to key down and should not be used.

MPO Inspection & Cleaning

The MPO connector is not field terminated. You can see why
when you consider the accuracy required. The spacing is
250µm between the fibers, and the fiber height is 2.5µm.
Multimode has a flat polish. Single-mode has a 7.8 to 8.2 degree
angled polish. It is very important to ensure that the MPO
surface is clean. The pictures below show a clean connector (on
top) and a dirty connector (on the bottom). Note that the
material the fiber is set into is always ‘dappled’. You will
require specialized MPO cleaning tools to access panel
interfaces and MPO connectors.

Connector face cleanliness is a critical factor for any fiber

system’s channel performance. Inspection and cleaning takes
place during installation, and post installation. The MPO is a
relatively large surface, so any foreign particles between faces
will be detrimental. Remember the correct process. Inspect,
Clean, Inspect and then Connect. Even brand new connectors
could be dirty! A cleaning kit and a hand-held viewer will be
required to inspect these. Cleaning and inspection is covered
in lesson 12 of this manual.
