    CV461: DESIGN OF TIMBER STRUCTURES

    TUTORIAL WEEK 5

    1. A client has noticed some structural issues with his floor in his house and is seeking
    your assistance to this end. He has provided you plans for the timber floor beam
    framing. The plans show that bearers are simply supported and spaced at 1.2m and span
    3.6m. Analyse the softwood timber bearers to see that it meets limit state design criteria.
    The bearer’s is of grade F8 and dimension (dxb) 200x50mm. Analyse the beam to
    sustain a Live Load of 1.5kPa, assume that a Dead Load of 0.5kPa will be able to
    account for the weight of the structural elements and finishing.

    2. After your analysis give your answer for the following questions:

    a. What are the results of your analysis?

    b. What recommendations would you give to the client?
