Black or White

Fallacies & Hasty

Generalizations

By Joshua Morgan & Lucas Edwards

What is the "either or" Fallacy
• An "either-or"
fallacy is an argument where only two
options are presented when there could still be other
options

Example of a Black and

white Fallacy
This example shows how the
bird is saying that since the
woman is against the war she
must be against the troops.
Insinuating that she must be
either for war and support the
troops or against the war and
be unsupportive of the troops

What can we do to fix and remove
the fallacy?
• By acknowledging that there are multiple ways and perspectives to address this
issue we can avoid the use of the "either or" fallacy.

• We could change the statement that "because you are against the war you are
against the troops" to "some people may oppose the war while still being in
support of the troops , while others are entitled to their own opinion, the troops
deserve respect and support.”
Either you support the
tax proposal or you’re
against helping the poor

To change the fallacy into a strong

argument you can change the
statement to “While the new tax
proposal is intended to help the
poor, there may be other ways to
achieve this goal. It's important
to consider all options and their
effects before making a decision."
Hasty
generazations
• Making a claim on evidence that is
just to small.
My example of this is that people bash
the government and claim they do
inside jobs.
A example found in media was when
Alex Jones claimed that the Sandy Hook
shooting was a inside job because
people wanted gun control. This is a
false claim, and this statement was
based off little to no evidence..
