LESSON
Creating and Solving Inequalities
2-4
Reteach

An inequality, such as 2x < 8, has infinitely many numbers in its solution.

1
For example, 2, 0, − , and −350 are all values of x that make this
2
inequality true.
Solve an inequality by UNDOING what has been done to x, using the
same steps as you would use for an equality, with the exception given
below.
Solving inequalities has one special rule different from solving equations.

Multiplying or dividing an inequality by a NEGATIVE number

REVERSES the inequality sign.

Try some positive and negative numbers in −3x < 15.

Example
−3x < 15 Note that 6 and 8 make this true, but it is not true for −6 or −8.
−3 x 15
> Dividing by − 3 REVERSES the inequality sign.
−3 −3
x > −5 This is still true for 6 and 8, and not true for −6 or −8.

Solve each inequality. Show your work.
