III. PROCEDURE
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

c.) Attendance

d.) Review

Have a short review of the previous lesson about Citing Textual Evidence by asking the following questions

1. What is Citing Textual Evidence?

2. What are the two types of Citing Textual Evidence? How do they differ from each other?

That is right! It seems that you still remember our last topic. In order to find textual evidence, you have to
analyze what you read and find important details. You have to read a bit slower or even reread a section of a text to find
details.

e.) Motivation

Before we proceed to our main topic for

today, let’s have a simple activity! Are you ready?

TITLE: THINK BEFORE YOU POST IT!

Pick from the TREE those given emojis and post it on the board. Put  if the short video clip or sentence shows
a fact and  if it is an opinion only.

1. You need oxygen to survive.

B. DISCUSSION

TOPIC: Determining the Truthfulness and Accuracy of the Material Viewed

With so many videos and articles circulated online on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram,

Twitter & others. How do we identify which ones are fake? And which ones is fact?

Give the learner two different placards, one with a ✓ mark and one with X mark that will serve as your answer
on our discussion. They just have to raise the placard with a ✓ mark if the material is showing a correct
information and the X mark if does not. what is Truthfulness? What is Accuracy? Aren’t they just the same?

Before proceeding to the activity, define first what is truthfulness and what is accuracy and cite an example.

https://www.google.com/search?q=justice+logo+with+human

https://www.google.com/search?q=land+domestic+air

https://www.google.com/search?q=no+classes+may+2022+anc+news

And how about this one? Show me your answer. Is it ✓or an X?

Yes very good. The answer is ✓.Why?

Yes, very good!

So you see? TRUTHFULNESS and ACCURACY go hand and hand.

Remember that “NOT EVERYTHING WE SEE OR READ ON SOCIAL MEDIA IS TRUE AND ACCURATE”

To determine the truthfulness & accuracy of the materials you viewed, you should identify what is fact and
what is fake. Posts like videos & articles can be easily manipulated.
It is necessary that you check the information provided to you online because FACTUAL INFORMATION IS A
MUST!

 False Information (Fake News)

Will you please read the definition of False Information or Fake News?

False Information or Fake News are those news stories that are simply false. The sets of information are
fabricated with no verifiable facts, sources or quotes.

Example:

I have here a picture that DepEd announces Grade 13.

https://www.google.com/search?q=deped+announces+grade+13

Show me your answer. Is it ✓or an X?

Yes. That is correct! Why?

Yes. That is correct. There are no official reports on the possibility of an additional year to the government’s K
to 12 basic education program.

Let’s try another example.

https://www.google.com/search?q=2022+election+results

What can you observe on the initial or unofficial 2022 presidential election result? Show me your answer. Is it
✓or an X?

Why?

That is correct. Here is the original initial or unofficial result of 2022 election.

https://www.google.com/search?q=2022+election+results

Did you see the difference between the original and the fake or edited one?

https://www.google.com/search?q=2022+election+results

It seems that you are a good observer in terms of the materials you are viewing.

TWO KINDS OF FAKE NEWS

 Misinformation

Will you please read the definition of Misinformation?

Thank you, Lindsay.

- Is a false information that is shared because it is believed to be real. This is a kind of information that is
not yet verified/proven yet people already agree on the information & consider it as true.

Example:

https://www.google.com/search?q=eating+garlic+can+prevent

Show me your answer. Is it ✓or an X?

Yes. Very Good!

What can you say about eating garlic can cure the Covid 19 disease?

Yes. That is absolutely correct.

On the other hand, we also have…

 Disinformation

Will you please read the definition of Disinformation?

Thank you, Lindsay.

- Disinformation is a false information that is spread even though it is known to be false. This category of
fake news aims to mislead people of truth. There is so called a propaganda or bias point of view to promote a person/a
group of people.
Example:

https://www.google.com/search?q=covid+19+biological+weapon

What can you say about the picture? Show me your answer. Is it ✓or an X?

Yes. That is correct. Why?

This is an example of hoax, a disinformation that intends to deceive people by using orchestrated propaganda
against something or someone. In this case the creator/source of this hoax would like to make people blame and hate
China for this pandemic.
