 Message from the Deputy Executive Principal

While thankfully this year did not see the cancellation of international
examinations, the shadow of COVID certainly loomed large over
the 2020-2021 academic year. The outbreak in Danang in July 2020
delayed the start of the school year for many schools, including AIS,
and meant that we started where we had left off the previous year,
observing a range of preventative measures which significantly
restricted extra-curricular activities and school and community
events throughout the first semester. When it finally seemed
that we were returning to something close to normal school life,
a major outbreak centred on the north of the country just prior to
Tet saw renewed limits and restrictions placed on school activities.
Worse was to follow when a fourth-wave outbreak in early May,
again centred in the North, forced Kindergarten, Primary and all
but Years 10 and 12 in Secondary, to revert to online learning for
the final weeks of the year. For significant periods throughout the
year then, it felt as though things were ‘on hold’ and the tone of the
school was somewhat subdued.

However, once again the AIS community – students, staff and

parents – demonstrated resilience and optimism in challenging
times. When schools were briefly forced to go online either side of
the Tet holiday, everyone just got on with it with a minimum of fuss.
And while there were again many things that fell victim to COVID
restrictions - regular assemblies, sports fixtures and tournaments, the AIS Welcome Back BBQ and
Christmas Party, Moon Festival and Tet Celebrations, just to name a few – in a sense, those activities
and events that did go ahead felt more special than usual and were perhaps appreciated just that
bit more. You can see many of these in the pages of the yearbook which is, as always, a celebration
of life at the school. Standout events for me included the superb staging and performance of the
musical production, Mama Mia; the always spectacular House Dance Competition; Year 7, 8, 10 and
12 Camps held prior to Tet (AIS being one of the very few schools in the city to go ahead with camps
this year); the dazzling Senior Prom held at the Park Hyatt Hotel; and senior Graduation.

In my first yearbook article published in 2016-2017, in response to a range of concerning global

developments occurring at that time, I wrote that 21st century schools needed to produce young
people with a global outlook who are informed, confident, connected and innovative; and who
are determined to create a better world for themselves and for others. In a post-COVID world this
will be even more essential. I remain confident that the education provided by AIS will continue to
develop our students into young men and women who are equipped with these qualities.

As I depart the school, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have
helped and supported me during my five year at AIS. I have been fortunate to work with teaching
colleagues, including school leaders, who are passionate about education. Their commitment to
our students and to their profession has been inspiring. They and I have been ably supported
by our ancillary staff. To the individuals and teams in Administration, Reception, HR, Finance,
Security and Property, thank you for your loyal and dedicated service. Thanks too to our parents.
The partnership between school and home is a vital one. However, my biggest thank you must
go to the students. AIS is an inclusive and cohesive community, one where my family and I have
felt welcome and valued, and this is primarily due to your friendliness, enthusiasm and respect for
each other and your teachers.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at AIS and am excited about the direction the school is moving
in under the new senior managers. I am absolutely certain that AIS will continue to grow and
flourish under their leadership. To those are departing AIS, and to those who are returning next
academic year, my very best wishes for the future.
