Introduction

Introduction
This users guide is intended to be used as a reference
and first aid when support is needed using VODIA 5
and as training material for new users. It is also
intended for aftermarket use by technicians and for
OEMs. For warehouse programming with VODIA, refer
to the VODIA Warehouse Programming Guide.

This version of the guide was written for VODIA 5. The

manual for the VODIA PDA is available separately. A
printed version of this guide is available to order at
www.vppn.com. The index and all links and references
are accessible in the PDF version.

What is VODIA 5?
Today, most Volvo Penta products have electrical
control and monitoring systems. VODIA 5 is a diagnostic
tool that supports mechanics to conduct professional
service and repairs for these products.

VODIA is the abbreviation for VOlvo DIAgnostics.

The VODIA 5 concept includes software running on a Laptop PC

and hardware that connects the laptop to the engine.

VODIA 5 is also an online tool, which means it works

alongside the core systems. In order to transmit and
receive the latest information, VODIA needs to be
connected to the internet. When carrying out operations
that require connection to the central systems, VODIA
5 will operate offline for a maximum of 28 days.

What engines and control

units does VODIA 5 support?
VODIA 5 can be used with D3 - D16 engines and with
Petrol 3.0 - 8.1 engines. It is compatible with EDC7,
EDC15, EDC17 and EMS which are the control and
EGC units for the latest gasoline engines.
VODIA 5 is also compatible with EVC (Electronic
Vessel Control) systems and industrial control units
such as the DCU and CIU.
Other applications built into VODIA 5 include the
EDC1 application which is used for engines with the
EDC1 control unit, EDC4 for EDC4 engines (Cologne
Engines) and MEFI for older Petrol (petrol) engines.

Connecting to the engine

To connect with an engine installation, VODIA 5 needs to

identify the installation. When identifying, VODIA 5 collects
information about the system and its control units. All
information about control units and software is saved in the
job card. See "Task cards" on page 13.

1. Ensure the VODIA 5 is connected to the motor and the

power is on.
2. In the Function group sidebar under Diagnostics
double click on the corresponding engine type.

MG = Marine Genset
GE = Genset
VE = Versatile

3. Generate a new task card and an existing task card
from the drop-down menu. The task cards can be
later displayed under Options - View Task Cards
and Log Files. See the Task cards section below
for more information on task cards.

4. If an automatic switch box is connected and the motor

type selected is suitable for twin, triple or quad
installations, you will be asked to choose one of
them.
5. If your installation includes an EVC system, you must
configure the HCU in service mode before proceeding.
Do this by proceeding with the steps described on the
display. You can scroll down to see older EVC

system types.
6. Identification will begin.
7. If the identified control units have different chassis
IDs, a conflict will occur. VODIA 5 displays all
identified control units and their associated chassis
IDs. Choose the chassis IDs that belong to the current
installation.

Attention! If you choose an incorrect Chassis ID and

reprogram all ECUs, you will not be able to revert
back to the old Chassis ID again.

Service and Maintenance

The service and maintenance function group contains
general operations for the entire system and some useful tests.

Log test, industrial or marine

This operation is used to record parameters (PID/PPID)

over time. There is a list of main data and several predefined
templates that can be used during registration. Custom
templates can be generated by pressing the New button
and deleted by pressing the Delete button.

How to generate a new model: log test, template

1. Click New.
2. Enter a model name and description.
3. On the MID number tabs mark the parameters to be
registered by clicking on them.
4. Click Save.

Registration data:
1. Select a template from the list.

2. Click play and play again to start

test it.
3. Click to choose parameters and click play.
4. When finished, click stop.
5. Type in the file name and click Yes.
If a request fails, an asterisk (*) is shown in place of a value.
If the request continues to fail, the asterisk turns red, which
means no more requests will be made. The reason for a
registration test
request failing could be that the parameter is not valid/
existing in the installation.
If the parameter has a continuous output value, a maximum
value and a minimum value can be chosen to be displayed.
Right-click on the parameter name and choose "Show
Details".
Logged data is saved as a .log file under C:
\ProgramData\Volvo\Vodia\PentaComLog\logs or C:
\Documents and settings\Users\All users\Application
data\Volvo\Vodia\PentaComLog\logs depending on the
operation.

This operation is used to report to the central systems what
type of application the engine is installed for.

Error Codes (Error Codes, Test

Mode)
The purpose of this test is to read fault codes stored in
the control units. There are two different types of fault
codes, active and inactive. Active fault codes indicate
present faults. Inactive fault codes indicate faults that
were registered at some point but are no longer present.
Inactive fault codes can be cleared together or individually.

An indication that the connected system has an active

fault code is a small red dot in the lower right corner, the
so-called "lingonberry". It is visible from anywhere in the
VODIA 5 menus. See illustration.
When read, all fault codes are stored in the task card.

Reset misfires, test

3.0 - 8.1 Gasoline

The misfire reset is used to reset the misfire counter for

all cylinders.
Misfire Reset - The misfire counters for all cylinders
will be reset to zero. This should be done, for example,
after a misfire or injection has been repaired which
initially caused the misfire.

Adaptive Reset - All adaptive misfire learning parameters

will be reset to zero on all cylinders. This must be done,
for example, when a damaged propeller has been
repaired or replaced, regardless of whether it was the
same that caused a misfire or not.

1. Start by clicking the play button.

2. Check preconditions. Reset misfires, test

ECU programming
The control units in the EVC installation are engine ECU, PCU and

they are linked with a chassis ID, which guarantees their compatibility.

Core Systems

All information about the engines with respect to the software is

stored in a central system called VDA. Every alteration, alteration of
parameters, programming or calibration of ECUs, carried out by
VODIA 5 must be informed to the VDA. This is done through Software
Administration. See "Report software" on page 29 for more
information on reporting.

Scheduling multiple installations

On multi-engine installations there are multiple chassis IDs - one for

each power train. It is recommended that all corresponding units on
a boat are reprogrammed at the same time, for example the engine
ECUs on both the port and starboard sides, to ensure that both
transmissions have the same software. A switch box, described on
page 5 and 6, is recommended when programming more than one
motor at a time.

The procedure

The procedure for programming the ECUs may differ depending on

which control unit is to be programmed, but the basic procedure is
always as follows:

1. Load the software 2.

Program the ECU(s)
3. Send report

Detailed procedure

1. Download software via Request Software

ECU, see "Ordering ECU software" on page 28.
2. Enter programming operation. Available from the Engine
function group to program the engine ECU, or from the
instrument and electronic control system to program the
EVC or CIU or DCU system.

4. If you want to replace any ECU during the

programming, click Yes when prompted and
follow the procedure described.
5. Repeat step 4 for all units to be replaced.

6. When programming is complete, the software

must be reported back to the VODIA web page
within 28 days. See "Reporting Software" on
page 29.
7. If it is a multi-engine installation,
drive the drive train using the Product Information
tab, refer to the figure on the right and repeat
the programming procedure.

Attention! Under no circumstances may

control units be exchanged between vehicles/
machines for troubleshooting or repairs, without
reprogramming them. Incorrect control unit

Important! When the VODIA 5 dialog informs

about the power off, it is essential that the main

forbidden to turn off VODIA only.

thing. Programs that make changes to the chassis ID in

accessory kits add software accessories to a chassis ID
and are therefore sold as hardware accessories. Running
an accessory kit will generate an invoice.
