RECTIFIERS
Assignment No: A
Half-wave Rectifier
Designed Values:
Resistor R = 10kΩ, Voltage V1 = Sine(0 10 1000)V , Diode D1 = D1N4001, L1=L2=10mH
Schematic diagram:
Results: In the positive half cycle, D is forward biased and conducts. Thus the output voltage is
the same as the input voltage. In the negative half cycle, D is reverse biased, and therefore output
voltage is zero. Thus the output voltage will be half-wave rectified.
Output Waveform:
Theoretical Values:
Output Voltage, V out = Vsecondary - Vdiode = 9.3V
Vm = Vout = 9.3V
Vavg = Vm/𝜋 = 2.96V
Vrms = Vm/2 = 4.65V
Ripple Factor 𝛾 = √((Vrms/VDC)2-1) = 1.211
Graphical Values:
Output Voltage, V out = 9.47V
Vavg = 2.98V
Vrms = 4.73V
Ripple Factor 𝛾 = √((Vrms/VDC)2-1) = 1.233
Assignment No: B
Designed Values:
Resistor R1 = 10kΩ, Input voltage V1 = sine (0 10 1000),L1 = L2 = L3 = 1mH, Diode
D1 = D1N4001, Diode D2 = D1N4001
Schematic diagram:
Results: In the first half cycle D1 is forward biased and conducts. But D2 is reverse biased and does not
conduct. In the second half cycle, D2 is forward biased and D1 is reverse biased therefore D2 conducts. So
the output voltage is obtained on both the positive and negative half cycles and is obtained as shown below.
Output waveform:
Numerical Calculations:
Theoretical Values:
Output Voltage, V out = Vsecondary - Vdiode = 9.3V
Vm = Vout = 9.3V
Vavg = 2Vm/𝜋 = 5.92V
Vrms = Vm/√2 = 6.57V
Ripple Factor 𝛾 = √((Vrms/VDC)2-1) = 0.49
Graphical Values:
Output Voltage, V out = 9.32 V
Vavg = 5.765V
Vrms = 6.49V
Ripple Factor 𝛾 = √((Vrms/VDC)2-1) = 0.517
Assignment No: C
Bridge Rectifier
Designed Values:
Resistor R1 = 10kΩ, Input voltage V1 = sine (0 10 1000), Diode D1 = D2 =
D3= D4= D1N4001, L1 = L2 = 10mH.
Schematic diagram:
Results:
In the positive half cycle, D2 & D3 are forward-biased and D1 & D4 are reverse-biased. In the
negative half cycle, D1 & D4 are forward-biased, and D2 & D3 are reverse-biased. The output voltage
waveform is shown in fig. 3 and it is the same as a full wave rectifier but the advantage is that only a single
secondary transformer is required.
Output waveform:
Numerical Calculations:
Theoretical Values:
Output Voltage, V out = Vsecondary - 2Vdiode = 8.6V
Vm = Vout = 9.3V
Vavg = 2Vm/𝜋 = 5.4V
Vrms = Vm/√2 = 6V
Ripple Factor 𝛾 = √((Vrms/VDC)2-1) = 0.48
Graphical Values:
Output Voltage, V out = 9V
Vavg = 5.406
Vrms = 6.154
Ripple Factor 𝛾 = √((Vrms/VDC)2-1) = 0.543
