III. PROCEDURE
A. PRE-ACTIVITY

students will pass the box with strips of papers inside. All they have to do is to
arrange the jumbled words to form a sentence while the music is playing. Once
the music stops, whoever holds the box will be the one to pick one strip of
paper inside the box; he/she will arrange the jumbled words to form the correct
sentence. After the game, the teacher will ask the students what they observe
from the sentences.
SAMPLE SENTENCES
 day. wash every the car They
 man. day. washed car. by every is The the. Young

IV. LESSON PROPER

 After the game, the teacher will give time to the students to analyze the
sentences given to them and ask what they observe from it.
 Then the teacher will present the lesson.

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE KEY POINTS FOR THE DISCUSSION

The voice of a verb tells you whether the subject of the sentence is completing an action
(active) or if an action is being done to the subject (passive).

TWO TYPES OF VOICE:

 ACTIVE VOICE
 PASSIVE VOICE

The Active Voice

Active voice is a grammar term used to classify sentences in which the subject of the sentence
is the one actively performing the action of the verb.

Active voice is contrasted with passive voice, in which the subject of the sentence is the
recipient of the verb’s action.

Let’s start with a simple sentence.

S V DO
The boy kicked the ball.
The boy functions as the subject or the doer of the action, kicked is the transitive verb and the
ball is the object of the verb.
MORE EXAMPLES:

 A student wrote the winning essay.

 Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
 The chef prepared a delicious meal.
NOTE: From the sentences above, the teacher will ask the students the subjects and verbs of
the sentences.
Remember the pattern of active voice is S + V + DO

The Passive Voice

In the passive voice, the subject receives the action expressed in the verb. The object of the
active sentence becomes the subject of the passive voice. You can recognize passive voice
expressions because the verb phrase will always include a form of be such as am, is, was, were,
are, or been. The presence of a be-verb, however, does not necessarily mean that the sentence
is in passive voice. Another way to recognize passive voice sentences is that they may include a
“by the…” phrase after the verb; the agent performing the action, if names, is the object of the
preposition in this phrase. For example,
The ball was kicked by the boy.
The ball which is the direct object becomes the subject or doer of the action.
MORE EXAMPLES:

 The winning essay was written by a student.

 The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell.
 A delicious meal was prepared by the chef.
In each sentence above, observe that the subject is the receiver instead of being the doer of the
action. Note that the form of the verb when the subject is the receiver, not the doer of the
action is made up of was + past participle of the verb. Thus, if the subject is acted upon, the
verb is in the passive voice.
Remember the pattern of passive voice which is S + V (past participle) + prepositional phrase
ACTIVITY 2:
During this activity, the teacher will present 5 sentences to her class and let the students
identify whether if the sentence is in the active and passive voice.
Direction: Write A in the blank before the number if the sentence is active and P if passive.
______1. Monkeys adore bananas.
______2. The ball was thrown by the pitcher.
______3. Nowadays, black kites are protected by law.
______4. The cashier counted the money.
______5. The olives are stoned and crushed in this room by my son.

ACTIVITY 3: KNOWLEDGE CHECKING

 In this part of the lesson delivery, the teacher will now provide the students a copy of a
short story, a crime story entitled “Bank Robbery at First National Bank” that will also
lead them to their activity later.
Police were called to the First National
Bank yesterday. The bank was robbed at
12:15pm. One million was stolen. No
customers were hurt, but one robber was
shot by police.

Seventeen customers were in the bank at

the time of the robbery. They followed the
instructions of the robbers and dropped to
the ground. No customers were hurt in the
robbery. One robber was shot by a police
officer when he tried to leave the bank.
The robber was hit by one bullet, but he
escaped with the other robbers. They
drove away in a white truck. Some of the
customers were interviewed on TV about the robbery. They were happy to be alive after this
terrible experience. “When the robber was shot, I screamed.” Many clues were left at the bank.
The most important clues are fingerprints of the robbers. The fingerprints were found on the
desk, on the doors, and on the guns. Two guns were left at the bank as the robbers escaped in a
car. One robber was shot, and the blood he left on the floor is another important clue. The
fingerprints and the blood are being studied by police investigators. The robbers were filmed by
the bank’s cameras, but they have not been identified yet. The video is being analyzed by the
police. Call the police if you have any information.

-END OF STORY-

 After the teacher gives enough time for the

students to read the entire story, they will now
proceed to their activity.
 The teacher should prepare T-chart with Passive
and Active on top. Individually, students are
going to write down the passive voice they found
on the story on the left side and write down the active voice of that passive sentence on
the right side.
 The students should pass their output to the teacher for checking.

V. ANALYSIS
 From the short story given, the teacher will ask few students from the class to share what
have they learned about it and how can they relate it in real life situation?

VI. GENERALIZATION
 The teacher now continues to ask the students on what they learned about the
active and passive voice.
 Orally, the teacher will ask the students to differentiate the active and passive voice,
it’s patterns and other related questions.

VII. EVALUATION
 The teacher will ask the student to Please get a ¼ sheet of paper and provide 5
examples of active with passive voice
 The teacher will give the students 5 minutes to complete the task.
